With new film, actress takes the ‘Quick’ route to cinema success

No one’s star has risen as quickly in the nation’s film scene as Gang Ye-won’s.

In the last three years, the 31-year-old actress has featured in three box office hits including “Haeundae” (2009) and “Hello Ghost” (2010), which together have racked up just under 15 million viewers.

Her latest movie “Quick,” which opened on July 20, had drawn more than 2.5 million viewers as of Monday.

“I’m nervous and excited,” Gang said. “In ‘Haeundae,’ I played a supporting role. This time, I had the responsibility of playing the lead. But the scenario was fun and I felt I could play the role well.”

The release of “Quick” represents the culmination of Gang’s 10-year career, much of which she has spent in obscurity, wandering from one minor role to the next.

Long after her fourth movie, “Haeundae,” was released two years ago, Gang said people still recognized her for her role in the movie as the girlfriend of one of the main characters. Now, people recognize her on her own merits, she said.

Also indicative of her growing prominence, she estimates she has been interviewed more than 150 times since “Haeundae.”

Gang credits her meteoric rise to Yoon Je-kyun, the producer of “Quick” and the director and producer of “Haeundae.”

After a minor role in the 2002 movie “Addiction,” Gang went four years without any movie roles until she won a minor role in “Miracle on 1st Street” (2007). Gang describes that period as “depressing” but said she retains the work ethic she developed then.

“I couldn’t participate in the productions I wanted and the productions that wanted me didn’t interest me,” Gang said. “I couldn’t see what the future held. I was scared and on the verge of bursting into tears.”

So she decided to focus on preparing herself for future roles. She finished her degree at Hanyang University, studying singing, pilates, yoga, dance, swimming and kendo, as well as a foreign language.

The turning point in her career came at her audition for “Miracle on 1st Street,” when she met Yoon, the “Haeundae” director, who cast her in the film. Since then, the two have also worked together on “Haeundae,” “Harmony” (2010) and “Quick.”

“Since Yoon and I met, everything has worked out well,” Gang said. “Even in my everyday life, I try not to over think things. I’m happy filming, so I’m in good spirits.”

Gang made her debut in the 2001 SBS sitcom “Honey Honey,” and until she starred in “She is Nineteen” (SBS 2004), she was known by her real name, Kim Ji-eun.

After playing supporting roles in “Miracle” and “Haeundae,” Gang played leading roles in “Harmony,” as a convict who kills her stepfather, and “Hello Ghost,” as a hospice nurse struggling with family problems.

In “Quick,” her seventh movie, Gang plays the role of an outspoken girl who lies about her age to get into a girl group. (She said the dancing lessons she took paid off for this part, although her offer to sing was turned down.)

Her character, Ah-rom, finds herself on a motorcycle driven by an ex-boyfriend (portrayed by Gang’s “Haeundae” co-star Lee), and wearing a helmet that is set to explode if they don’t deliver a package on time. The high-speed, high-stakes race is reminiscent of the 1994 film “Speed” and the 1998 French film “Taxi.”

“After ‘Haeundae,’ my mother said, ‘Never do another film that dangerous,’” Gang said. “So I wonder what she’ll say this time. Maybe she’ll watch the movie and cry.”

Given her output of four movies in three years, the question for Gang is obvious: what’s next?

“I’ve been working endlessly and it’s too early to have plans,” she said. “First, I want to see ‘Quick’ succeed.”

시한폭탄 헬멧 쓴 배역인데 ‘생활 연기’ 할 수는 없죠

영화 ‘퀵’으로 주연 신고한 배우 강예원

‘베이비 페이스’라는 말이 딱이다. 배우 강예원(31). 스크린에서 풍기던 성숙한 이미지와는 깜짝 놀랄 정도로 다르다. ‘해운대’(2009)의 피서 온 대학생, ‘하모니’(2010)의 성폭행한 의붓아버지를 죽인 죄수, ‘헬로우 고스트’(2010)의 가족 때문에 힘겨워하는 호스피스 간호사…. 20일 개봉한 액션블록버스터 ‘퀵’에선 폭주족이었던 아이돌 가수다. 네 작품 모두 실제보다 훨씬 어른스러워 보인다. 전형적인 나이배기다.

　억울해할 일만은 아니다. 그의 아기 같은 얼굴은 답이 채워지길 기다리는 빈 괄호와 같다. ‘출연작 3편, 관객 1700만명’이라는 행운의 이유가 어렴풋이 짐작된다.

최근 2년새 충무로에서 이만큼 고속성장한 여배우도 없다. “‘쟤 ‘해운대’에서 이민기 여자친구잖아’ 하던 분들이 이젠 ‘어, 강예원이네?’ 해요. ‘해운대’부터 ‘퀵’까지 인터뷰만 150번 넘게 한 것 같네요.”

　‘퀵’의 아이돌 가수 아름은 폭주족 시절 애인이자 퀵서비스맨 기수(이민기)의 오토바이에 동승하게 된다. 시한폭탄이 장착된 헬멧을 쓴 채. 강예원은 두 시간 내내 달리고 구르고 뒹굴고 울부짖는다. 목청이 성할까 싶을 정도다. “놀라울 정도로 많은 에너지를 필요로 했던 작품이었어요. 머리에 폭탄이 있는데 미치지 않을 수 있을까요? ‘생활 연기’가 차분하게 나올 수 있을까요? 내내 ‘미친 X’처럼 정신없이 들떠있는 모습을 보여줘야 한다고 생각했어요.”

　지금은 “쟤가 뭔데 100억짜리 영화에 벌써 나오냐”는 질시를 받지만, 예까지 오는데 10년 걸린 ‘늦깎이’다. 김지은이라는 이름으로 2001년 SBS 시트콤 ‘허니허니’에 출연했고, 이듬해 구본승과 주연한 영화 ‘마법의 성’을 찍었다. 하지만 ‘글래머 몸매’‘파격 베드신’만 화제성으로 소비됐다. 이후 4년은 연기와 상관없이 살아야 했다. 그는 “암울했던 그 시절이 지금의 밝고 매사에 열심인 나를 만들었다”며 웃었다.

조범구 감독의 액션블록버스터 ‘퀵’. 강예원은 졸지에 폭탄 운반 오토바이에 타게 된 아이돌 가수를 연기했다.　“제가 원하는 작품은 할 수 없었고, 내키지 않는 작품은 절 원했어요. 앞이 안 보였죠. 겁을 잔뜩 먹었던 것 같아요. 툭 건드리면 금방 울음을 터뜨릴 듯한 상태로 살았죠. 하느님을 원망한 적도 많았어요. 왜 나한테 연기의 길을 걷게 해 이 고통을 겪게 할까 싶었죠.”

　그때 마음을 고쳐먹지 않았다면 콧소리로 “컨셉입니다~”를 외치거나 헬멧을 쓴 채 샤워하는 ‘퀵’의 포복절도할 연기는 없었다. “누군가 날 불러줄 때까지 준비된 배우가 되자고 결심했어요. 학교(한양대 성악과)를 마저 다니면서 일과를 바쁘게 짰죠. 외국어를 비롯해 검도·필라테스·요가·헬스·춤·수영 등 안 한 게 없어요.” 2007년 ‘1번가의 기적’ 오디션이 그를 기적적으로 구원했다. 그때 만난 윤제균 감독과의 인연은 ‘윤제균 사단’으로 이어졌다.

　이후 경험한 “연기인지조차 까맣게 잊어버리는 카타르시스의 순간”은 강예원이 발견한 연기의 자력(磁力)이다. “그 인물의 모든 걸 기억하는 일이 제겐 필요해요. ‘하모니’의 유미를 연기할 땐 태아 초음파 사진을 구해 휴대전화에 저장해놓고 줄곧 들여다봤어요. 성폭행 피해자 유미에게 아이를 유산한 과거를 만들어준 거죠. 정신과에 찾아가 피해자들이 어떤 증세를 보이는지도 들어봤고요. 이렇게 살다보니 촬영 끝나갈 때쯤엔 죽고 싶단 충동이 들 정도였어요. 나중엔 소속사 매니저들이 지방 촬영장으로 다 내려왔어요. 그냥 놔뒀다가 저한테 무슨 일 생길 것 같다고. ”(웃음)

　가만히 얘길 듣다보니 더이상 그의 얼굴이 ‘베이비 페이스’로만 보이진 않았다. ‘천(千)의 얼굴’로 향할 가능성이 보였다. “배역 하나하나가 소중하고 감사하다”는 강예원, 기억해둘 만한 이름이다.
