Hyundai clan establishes nation’s largest charity

Several former affiliates of Hyundai Group announced on Monday the establishment of a 500 billion won ($470 million) charitable foundation, the country’s largest.

The participating affiliates include the world’s largest shipyard, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., in addition to KCC Group, Hyundai Marine and Fire Insurance Co., Hyundai Department Store, Hyundai Development Co. and Hyundai Welding Co.

Chung Mong-joon, the former chairman of the Grand National Party and owner of Hyundai Heavy Industries, will contribute 40 percent of the 500 billion won endowment, representing about 10 percent of his total holdings in the shipyard.

A preparatory committee for the charity, called the Asan Sharing Foundation, will be headed by an honorary professor of Seoul National University, Chung Jin-hong, who has no relation to the Hyundai clan.

The purpose of the charitable foundation, the preparatory committee’s Chung said, is to commemorate late Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung.

“This March was the 10th anniversary of the late Chung’s death,” said Chung Jin-hong. “In 1977, when the word ‘welfare’ was unfamiliar, Chung established Asan Social Welfare Foundation and made efforts to make a ‘better society for all to live.’ It is the legacy and the spirit of Chung.”

The preparatory committee said the foundation also planned to help reduce the gap between the rich and poor as well as helping young entrepreneurs set up companies. “Social integration should become an open movement, participated by not only the foundation but also the government and enterprises,” said Chung.

The idea for establishing Asan Sharing Foundation was said to have begun early this year.

“I heard that during the memorial service for the late Chung, family members naturally began discussing about establishing a foundation and all members willingly expressed their participation,” said Chung.

Former GNP leader Chung Mong-joon, who is making the largest contribution to the foundation, is also known to be a firm believer in “noblesse oblige.”

In a 1992 book, the owner of Hyundai Heavy Industries expressed pessimism about enterprises that do not contribute to society. Chung will not be involved any further in the establishment of the foundation, according to the preparatory committee.

The late Chung died in 2001, and his conglomerate, which was the largest family-controlled chaebol in the country, was broken up into several affiliates.

Despite the spin-offs, the affiliates and former affiliates of Hyundai Group are still very much controlled by the Chung family.

Chung Mong-joon, the late Chung’s sixth son, is the largest shareholder of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., while the late Chung’s third son, Chung Mong-keun, is the honorary president of Hyundai Department Store.

The late Chung’s seventh son, Chung Mong-yoon, controls Hyundai Marine and Fire Insurance Co.

Hyundai Development Co. is owned by the late Chung’s nephew Chung Mong-gyu, and KCC Group is owned by the son of the late Chung’s youngest brother, Chung Mong-jin.

However, Hyundai Motor, owned by the late Chung’s second son, Chung Mong-koo, will not take part in the new foundation as it already operates a similar foundation.

Hyundai Group, which is currently run by the late Chung’s daughter-in-law, Hyun Jeong-eun, will also not be contributing to the foundation.

The preparatory committee said that the official launch of the charitable foundation will take place next month after all official proceedings are completed.

“권력·부 함께 못 누려” 교훈 … 5000억 아산나눔재단 설립

한나라당 정몽준 전 대표를 비롯한 현대가(家)의 사람들이 5000억원을 출연해 국내 최대의 사회복지재단을 설립하기로 했다고 아산나눔재단 준비위원장인 정진홍 서울대 명예교수가 16일 밝혔다. 정 명예교수가 공개한 출연 내역에 따르면 정 전 대표는 개인 보유 현금 300억원과 현대중공업 주식 1700억원을 기부하기로 했다. 정 전 대표가 최대 주주로 있는 현대중공업그룹은 2380억원을 낼 계획이다. 정 전 대표의 기부 규모는 전 재산인 약 3조원(현대중공업 주식 821만 주의 16일 주식시장 종가 기준)의 7% 수준이다.

　현대 창업자 가문인 KCC·현대해상화재보험·현대백화점·현대산업개발·현대종합금속도 사재 240억원과 법인 출연금 380억원을 기부한다. 정 전 대표의 형인 정몽근 현대백화점 명예회장, 동생인 정몽윤 현대해상화재 회장과 삼촌 정상영 KCC 명예회장, 사촌인 정몽규 현대산업개발 회장·정몽석 현대종합금속 회장·정몽진 KCC 회장·정몽익 KCC 사장, 조카 정지선 현대백화점 회장도 사재를 낸다. 현대차그룹은 현재 사회복지재단인 해비치재단을 운영하고 있어 불참했다.

　정 전 대표는 16일 본지와의 인터뷰에서 “이번 기부 결정은 오래전부터 갖고 있던 기업의 사회적 책임, 노블레스 오블리주를 실천하는 차원에서 비롯된 것으로 대권 도전과는 무관하다”고 말했다.

　- 이명박 대통령이 8·15 경축사에서 ‘공생발전’을 얘기하자 다음 날 사회 환원을 발표했다.

　“(웃으며) 대통령과 사전 내통했다는 얘기냐. 대통령에게선 전화 한 통 없었다. 올해 3월 아버지(정주영 명예회장) 10주기를 맞아 재단을 설립하려 했는데 회사나 사촌들도 참여하다 보니 재단 설립이 늦어졌다.”

　- 대선 주자로서 여론을 의식한 것 아닌가.

　“내가 좋아서 하는 기부까지 대선을 의식해 한다면 내가 너무 처량하지 않겠나. 나를 ‘정치 노무자’라고 생각할 만큼 정치를 중시하지만 모든 걸 정치 때문에 하진 않는다.”

　- 목표를 양극화 해소로 잡았는데.

　“선친은 40년 전인 1977년 농촌 의 가난과 질병 을 없애려고 아산복지재단을 만들어 농촌에 병원을 지었다. 지금은 사회가 바뀌어 양극화와 청년실업이 문제인데 뾰족한 해결책도 없고, 정부만 할 수 있는 일도 아니어서 함께 고민하자는 거다.”

　 정 전 대표의 결심과 관련해 여권 관계자는 “선친인 정주영 회장이 92년 대선 때 통일국민당 후보로 출마해 엄청난 자금을 쓰고서도 실패했던 모습을 정 전 대표가 지켜보면서 ‘한국 사회에서는 권력과 부를 함께 갖지 못한다’고 보고 부(富)의 사회 환원이란 결단을 내린 것 같다”고 분석했다.
