‘Dear Leader’ summers on yacht

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has been enjoying his summer on a luxury yacht near a vacation house in Hamhung, South Hamgyong Province, while ordinary citizens in the country are battling the aftermath of recent torrential rains.

According to a South Korean source who is well informed on North Korean issues, Kim had been seen making the most of sunny weather on the eastern coast of the country since the start of August.

“The vacation house where Kim stayed is near the Feb. 8 Vinalon Complex,” the source said.

Kim has visited the factory several times in the past. His single reported “field guidance” trip this month was to the factory, which produces Vinalon, or vinylon, a synthetic fiber used commonly in North Korea.

The source did not confirm whether Kim had left the vacation house as of yesterday.

Kim Jong-il usually takes vacations during August, and thus makes significantly fewer guidance trips to various locations in the country.

There were nine trips reported last August, compared to an average 13.4 field trips monthly during the rest of the year.

In July, Kim was reported by North Korean official media to have conducted 20 field trips.

None of the field trips from July through this month reported in the North’s official media were to the provinces hit by torrential rains: Hwanghae, Pyongan and South Hamgyong.

함경도 동해안으로 휴가

김정일 북한 국방위원장이 이달 초부터 함경남도 지역의 한 동해안 별장에서 머물고 있는 것으로 파악됐다. 북한 내부 사정에 밝은 대북 소식통은 18일 “김정일이 특각(전용별장)에서 호화 요트를 타는 등 하계 휴양 중인 것으로 안다”며 “최근 북한 언론에서 김정일의 공개활동 보도가 뜸해진 것도 이런 이유 때문”이라고 말했다. 북한 관영매체들은 김정일이 지난달 군부대·공장 방문 등 20차례의 공개 일정을 가진 것으로 보도했으나 이달에는 8일 함흥의 2·8비날론연합기업소 방문 소식만 전했다. 소식통은 “김정일은 2008년 8월 건강 이상으로 쓰러진 때를 제외하고는 매년 동해안 등지의 특각에서 휴식을 취하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

　일각에서는 대규모 수해를 겪었다고 대북 지원을 호소하고 나선 와중에 김정일이 호화 요트까지 동원한 휴가를 즐기는 데 대해 비판도 제기된다. 정부 당국자는 “수해와 관련해 김정일이 현장을 방문하거나 주민들을 위로한 사례는 없는 것으로 알고 있다”고 말했다. 김정일은 2009년 말 이탈리아 아라뮤트사의 최고급 요트를 수입하려다 대북 제재로 무산됐다. 또 지난해 5월에는 평양 인근의 남포지역 태성호 호수에서 김정일의 전용 요트가 포착되기도 했다.
