Teen dreams of K-pop stardom

NEW YORK - A 15-year-old American girl from Florida won the first New York K-Pop Contest on Tuesday in New York City.

Madison Gunst beat 92 other individuals and teams to win the inaugural event organized by the Korean Cultural Service New York.

“My dream is to be the first non-Korean, non-Asian idol,” she told reporters after being awarded the grand prize.

Gunst earned a berth at the international K-pop contest to be held in Seoul in November, as well as a round-trip airfare to the country. She will next square up against the winners of other regional K-pop contests held in some 20 countries at the Seoul event.

Around 2,500 K-pop fans attended the final at Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park, suggesting the growing popularity of the musical genre and the so-called “Korean Wave” in the U.S. Allkpop.com, the biggest K-pop site in the U.S., now receives more than 4 million daily visitors.

The managers of the Web site said they were inundated with over 300 telephone and e-mail inquiries within minutes of posting an online advertisement for the contest.

Tuesday’s regional final was held in an open concert hall and featured eight finalists, seven of whom were not ethnic Koreans.

Four, including Gunst, danced, and the rest sang. Gunst chose K-pop singer Jang Woo-hyuk’s “Weekend Night” to accompany her routine.

The 10th grader at Nova High School High School in Davie, Florida practiced for several hours each day before the competition began in order to get in the groove. She said she kept going over the moves one at a time to perfect them and emulate the style of Korean dancers while adding some trademark innovations of her own.

“[The routine] has my own little mark on it, has something about me in it,” she said.

Gunst named Jang as her favorite K-pop star, describing him in typically teenage terms as “definitely the king of dancing.” Jang, in a posting on his Twitter account on Thursday, welcomed the news of Gunst’s victory and expressed his desire to meet her later this year in Seoul.

Gunst said she was introduced to K-Pop by a Chinese friend of hers three years ago and became addicted to its catchy rhythms and dances.

Her mother, Mercedes, said she did not expect her daughter to win on her first attempt but promised to do whatever was necessary to help the youngster achieve her dream of breaking into K-pop.

The event was part of the second annual NY Korea Day Festival in New York City, and many U.S. citizens came out to taste Korean culture including its cuisine. Visitors lined up to sample some bulgogi, or marinated barbecued beef, at a free food station.

Musical performances, including one by Soria, which fuses traditional Korean music with other genres, drew large crowds.

“서울에 가서 아시아인이 아닌 첫 한국 아이돌 가수가 되는 게 꿈이에요.”

15세 소녀 매디슨 군스트(Madison Gunst)는 거침 없이 말했다. 그는 16일(현지시간) 미국 뉴욕 센트럴파크 나움버그밴셀 야외무대에서 뉴욕 한국문화원 주최로 열린 제1회 ‘K-팝(한국가요)’ 경연대회의 히로인이었다. 영화 ‘레옹’의 여주인공 나탈리 포트먼을 연상시키는 가냘픈 외모에서 장우혁의 ‘주말 밤’ 비트에 실린 힘있는 춤이 뿜어져 나오자 무대 앞을 가득 메운 2500여 관객은 열광했다.

　이날 경연대회엔 미 남동부 지역에서 참가한 93개 팀 가운데 예선을 통과한 8명이 실력을 겨뤘다. 이 가운데 한인 교포는 한 명뿐이었을 만큼 미국 청소년 사이에서 한국가요는 이미 폭넓은 팬층을 확보하고 있었다. 특히 미국에서 하루 400만 명이 찾는 최대 한국가요 사이트인 ‘allkpop.com’에 대회 안내가 나가자 순식간에 300건 이상의 문의가 쇄도하기도 했다. 참가자는 춤과 노래로 각각 4명씩 나뉘어졌다.

　우승한 군스트에겐 오는 11월 서울에서 열리는 제1회 세계 K-팝 경연대회 출전권과 서울 왕복항공권이 돌아갔다. 11월 서울 대회엔 세계 20여 개국에서 열린 지역별 K-팝 경연대회 1위 수상자가 참가한다.

　군스트는 “3년 전 중국인 친구의 소개로 처음 한국가요를 접하고 중독성 있는 비트와 춤에 반했다”며 “서울 세계대회에서도 우승해 한국 아이돌 스타가 되고 싶다”고 말했다.

　플로리다주 다이비의 노바고교 10학년인 그는 “유튜브 동영상을 보며 동작 하나하나를 익혔다”며 “댄스의 황제 장우혁을 꼭 만나보고 싶다”고 덧붙였다. 딸의 공연을 지켜본 엄마 메르세데스씨는 “이번이 딸의 첫 대회 출전이었는데 바로 1등을 할 줄은 꿈에도 생각 못했다”며 “한국 아이돌 스타가 될 수 있도록 적극 뒷바라지하겠다”고 기뻐했다.

　제2회 한국의 날 행사와 함께 열린 이날 대회엔 시작 전부터 한국가요를 즐기는 동호회원이 곳곳에서 즉석 공연을 펼치기도 했다. 대회장 옆에선 ‘미 동부 한식세계화 추진위원회’와 농림수산식품부 및 한식재단 후원으로 한식 체험 행사도 열렸다. 현장에선 불고기 쌈이 큰 인기를 끌었다. 김치 먹기 대회엔 현지인이 앞다퉈 참가해 길게 줄을 서기도 했다.

　경연대회 후엔 퓨전 국악 밴드로 유명한 ‘소리아’와 클래식 오케스트라 ‘카메라타’의 공연도 이어져 행사장을 찾은 뉴요커의 눈과 귀를 사로잡았다. 국악 공연을 처음 접했다는 존 대럴씨는 “한국의 전통악기로 팝음악을 연주할 수 있다는 게 신기하다”며 “대금의 소리가 오묘하다”고 말했다.
