Korean actress lands top role in Japanese drama

Actress Kim Tae-hee has landed a role in the Japanese drama series “Boku to Star no 99 Nichi” (“99 Days of Me and My Star”), according to her agency Lua Entertainment. The agency said yesterday that the series, whose premise is similar to that of the 1999 hit British film “Notting Hill,” will air in October on Fuji TV.

Kim already has a huge fan base in Japan because of previous roles in hit Korean dramas, including “My Princess” (2011) and “Iris” (2009), that have been broadcast in Japan, but this is the first time the 31-year-old actress has appeared in a Japanese drama.

In the series, Kim will play the role of a top Korean actress, Han Yu-na, who eventually falls in love with an ordinary Japanese man. Award-winning actor Nishijima Hidetoshi will play the male lead.

Kim was quoted by Korean news outlets as saying that “Acting in Japanese is not an easy job but I will do my best to attract drama fans both in Korea and Japan.”

Amid the recent rise of anti-Korea sentiment in Japan, industry experts expect Kim’s drama series to play a role in bridging the troubled relationship between the two countries.

Last week, there was a huge demonstration in Tokyo in which between 1,500 and 2,000 Japanese gathered in front of the Fuji TV offices. The demonstrators blasted the broadcasting station for airing too many Korean shows and not enough Japanese programming.

Kim made her debut in a TV commercial in 2000 while still in college. She instantly shot to stardom when it was discovered that she was attending Seoul National University, the top college in Korea, which brought her the nickname “the beauty with brains.”
