Gates’ pep talk changes cancer patient’s world

Two dreams have come true for teenager Shin Joo-hwan this year: He got to meet Bill Gates and his body is responding well enough to chemotherapy that his hair has regrown.

Now back in school, the teenage leukemia patient recalls meeting the mighty Microsoft chairman on Aug. 19 at the company’s Seattle headquarters after the Korea Make-A-Wish Foundation made his dream come true.

During their 45-minute meeting, which Shin arrived at courtesy of a chauffeur-driven limousine, Gates told the youngster, who hopes to become a scientist, not to quit on his dreams.

Gates, formerly the world’s wealthiest man, explained his vision of how society will change in the future through IT innovations. He said a greater reliance on computers would likely see students taking classes at home in the coming years, reserving school time for more creative or group projects.

Korean IT giants like Samsung are already preparing for this, he added.

Gates told Shin that future developments in IT would allow those who are less capable of mobility to stay close to their friends.

Shin, a student at Sejong Science high school, was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2009. After receiving treatment last year, he contacted Make-A-Wish, which tries to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses, and expressed his wish to meet the tech guru.

“I want to meet [him] and be inspired to pursue a new life ... where the more fortunate help those who are in need,” he wrote in his letter.

With the assistance of a volunteer group, the foundation managed to arrange a meeting one year after receiving his letter.

The meeting took place at Microsoft HQ, in Gates’ vision of a typical home of the future. This demonstrates how the company plans to incorporate technology into the living rooms of average middle-class houses over the next decade.

When Shin asked Gates about his over-arching goal, Gates explained how he wants to help build a more fair global society, where medicine, food and suitable hygiene facilities are available to all.

He went on to explain how he was initially concerned that his charity work would interfere with his duties as chairman.

However, on the advice of his parents, he began integrating the two and focusing on more fun humanitarian projects, which he said had actually helped his business.

Shin’s condition has now improved considerably. He has a full head of hair, he is back in class and he has a more positive view of the future.

“I have a clear future goal now,” he said.

“I know that it will probably take at least five years to completely recover from my leukemia, but I want to fight this disease and find a way to give to others the courage that Bill Gates gave me.”

He added that Gates had also imparted some words of wisdom on university and career matters.

“미래의 정보기술(IT)은 몸이 불편해도 친구들과 가깝게 연락하고 지낼 수 있도록 도와줄 거야. 희망을 잃지 말고 삶을 즐겨.”(빌 게이츠)

백혈병과 싸우고 있는 ‘과학 꿈나무’가 ‘IT업계의 황제’와 만났다. 19일 오전(현지시간) 마이크로소프트(이하 MS) 창업자인 빌 게이츠(Bill Gates)와 미국 시애틀에 있는 MS 본사에서 만난 것이다.

주인공은 세종과학고에 재학 중인 신주환(17)군. 신군은 2009년 4월 백혈병 판정을 받은 뒤 3년째 투병 중이다. 지난해 항암 치료로 지쳐 있을 때 “빌 게이츠를 만나 새로운 삶의 희망을 얻고 싶다”며 ‘한국 메이크어위시재단’을 통해 빌 게이츠에게 편지를 보냈다. 그를 만나고 싶었던 이유에 대해 신군은 “가진 자의 사회적 의무를 실천하는 ‘노블레스 오블리주’의 삶을 배우고 싶었다”고 말했다. 불가능할 것만 같았던 꿈은 1년여 만에 현실이 됐다. 메이크어위시재단과 푸르덴셜 자원봉사단 등의 끈질긴 노력 덕분이었다.

면담 당일 게이츠는 신군이 묵고 있던 호텔로 리무진을 보냈다. 두 사람의 만남은 10년 후 미국 중산층의 삶을 가정해 만들어놓은 MS 본사 내 ‘미래의 방’에서 이뤄졌다. 45분간의 만남에서 신군은 영어로 또박또박 질문을 던졌다.

“삶의 모토가 무엇인지요?”

“모든 사람이 평등한 삶을 살도록 돕는 것이 내 지향점이야. 그게 가능하냐고? 과학과 혁신을 통해 이 꿈을 이룰 수 있다고 믿어.”

게이츠는 “현재는 약이나 음식·화장실 등 정상적인 삶을 위해 필요한 것들조차 없이 사는 사람들이 더 나은 삶을 살도록 돕는 일부터 하고 있다”고 대답했다.

자선 사업에 관심이 많은 신군에게 게이츠는 “처음엔 나도 자선활동이 회사 업무에 방해가 된다고 생각했다”고 말했다. “자선활동을 강조하신 부모님의 말씀에 따라 회사 발전에 도움이 될 ‘재미있는 자선활동’을 기획하게 됐어. 그런데 이젠 회사에서 물러나고 이 일에만 매진할 정도로 푹 빠졌어.”

게이츠는 과학자의 길을 걷고자 하는 신군에게 IT로 인해 바뀔 미래에 관한 얘기도 빼놓지 않았다. 게이츠는 “IT의 변화는 사람들의 인식도 변화시킬 것”이라며 “예컨대 미래의 학교에서는 등교 전에 집에서 컴퓨터로 수업을 듣고 학교에 와서는 친구들과 공동 프로젝트를 하며 보다 창의적인 시간을 보내는 식으로 변할 수 있다”고 했다. 이어 “한국의 삼성 같은 기업도 이러한 미래를 내다보고 준비하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

신군은 “빌 게이츠가 대학 진학에 대한 고민까지 세세하게 관심을 갖고 상담해 줬다”며 가슴 벅차 했다. 지금은 상태가 많이 호전돼 머리카락도 다시 나고 학교도 복학했다.

신군은 이렇게 말하며 환하게 웃었다. “뚜렷한 삶의 목표가 생겼어요. 완치하는 데 5년 이상 걸린다지만 꼭 이겨내서 빌 게이츠가 내게 준 용기를 저도 누군가에게 전해주고 싶습니다.”
