HIV case causes porn industry shutdown

LOS ANGELES - An adult film performer has tested positive for HIV, causing porn producers to shut down shoots in Southern California as the diagnosis is confirmed through retesting, according to an industry group.

Free Speech Coalition’s executive director, Diane Duke, told The Los Angeles Times on Monday that her group became aware of the HIV case Saturday.

A series of tests were being conducted on the performer to confirm the case before anyone the performer might have spread the illness to will be notified to get tested, Duke told The Associated Press. She didn’t know how long that would take.

Duke declined to release the performer’s name, age or gender, citing the person’s federal right to medical privacy. She also declined to say how her group learned of the case.

The case was found in an out-of-state clinic that doesn’t report to California health officials, said Duke.

If the initial case is confirmed, the group will ask two generations of the person’s sexual partners to get tested, meaning those who had sex with the performer and the sexual partners of those who had sex with the performer.

The voluntary industry shutdown affects porn producers in the San Fernando Valley, the heart of the multibillion dollar American porn industry, and includes Hustler and Evil Angel’s productions.

The porn industry was shut down similarly in late 2010, after porn actor Derrick Burts was diagnosed HIV positive. Burts has since gone on to advocate for the mandatory use of condoms in porn with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

The health advocacy group and state workplace safety officials say state law mandates porn performers to use condoms to protect themselves under the same set of rules that require nurses to wear gloves in hospitals when dealing with bodily fluids.

Cal/OSHA is working to clarify the regulation to make it specific to porn.

Earlier this month, the health advocacy group announced that it will gather 41,138 petition signatures to get the issue of condoms in porn on the June 2012 ballot. The ballot measure would ask Los Angeles residents whether porn producers must require performers to use condoms on shoots in order to get a filming permit.

“The question remains how many performers must become infected with HIV and other serious STDs before the industry will clean up its act and government will do the right thing?” said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

LA 포르노 업계, 배우 에이즈 감염에 제작 중단

미국 캘리포니아주 로스앤젤레스의 '주요 산업' 가운데 하나인 포르노 영화 업계가 에이즈에 걸린 배우가 있다는 사실이 알려지면서 영화 제작을 일시 중단했다.

포르노 산업 종사자 모임인 '자유 발언 연대' 다이앤 듀크 전무이사는 에이즈 바이러스(HIV) 양성 반응을 보인 포르노 영화배우가 있다고 29일 (현지시간) 밝혔다.

듀크 전무이사는 이날 오전 포르노 영화 제작사들에 이런 사실을 알리고 당분간 영화 제작을 중단하라고 요청했고 허슬러를 비롯한 포르노 영화 제작사들은 이를 수용했다고 설명했다.

'자유 발언 연대'는 지난 27일 포르노 배우 가운데 HIV 감염자가 있다는 사실을 알았다고 밝혔지만 해당 배우의 신원은 물론 어떤 경로로 이런 정보를 입수했는지는 함구했다.

듀크 전무이사는 "이름과 나이, 여자인지 남자인지도 알려줄 수 없다"면서 "다음 주에 정밀 검사 결과가 나올 예정"이라고 말했다.

문제의 포르노 배우가 HIV 검사를 캘리포니아주에서 받은 게 아니라서 주 보건 당국도 신원을 모른다고 듀크 전무이사는 덧붙였다.

'자유 발언 연대'는 이 배우와 성관계를 맺은 배우들에게는 HIV 검사를 받도록 권유할 계획이다.

이 사건으로 포르노 영화 산업은 또 한 번 위기를 맞을 것으로 보인다.

지난 2004년 포르노 배우 10여 명이 에이즈에 걸린 사실이 밝혀져 두 달 이상 영화 제작이 전면 금지된 적이 있으며 이후에도 종종 '에이즈 배우'가 드러나 물의를 빚었다.

시민단체가 앞장서서 포르노 영화를 찍을 때 배우들이 반드시 콘돔을 착용해야 한다는 법률을 제정하자는 운동도 활발하게 전개되고 있다.

그러나 포르노 영화 제작자들은 배우들의 판단에 맡겨야 한다며 콘돔 의무화에 반대하고 있다.

이번 사건을 계기로 콘돔 의무화를 비롯한 각종 규제가 강화될 것이라는 우려에 업계는 바짝 긴장하는 것으로 알려졌다.

포르노 영화배우들은 매달 성병 검사를 해서 이상이 없다는 검사 결과를 제출해야 영화에 출연할 수 있는 자체 규정을 시행하고 있다.

한편 로스앤젤레스 카운티 샌퍼낸도 밸리 지역에는 프로노 영화 제작사 200여개가 몰려 있으며 1천500여명의 배우를 동원해 연간 1만1천여편의 포르노 영화를 만들어 연간 130억달러의 매출을 올린다.
