Eagles complete Vicks’ road to redemption

PHILADELPHIA - Michael Vick, who was jailed for almost two years on dogfighting charges, has agreed a six-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid players.

ESPN reported the $100-million deal includes about $40 million in guaranteed money to Vick, who led the Eagles to the NFC East title last year.

The 31-year-old was also the starting quarterback in the National Football League’s Pro Bowl all-star game.

“I’m very happy we were able to reach an agreement with Michael on this long-term contract,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said.

“It’s a product of all the hard work Michael has done to better himself over the last couple of years, both on and off the field. I’m very proud that he has been able to achieve success again in this league, but he’ll be the first one to tell you that there is a lot of work yet to be done by him and this team as a whole.

“And there’s no doubt in my mind that he will continue on that path.”

Vick will reportedly earn about $16 million a season during the first three years of the contract, making him one of the highest-paid players in the league. The team placed a franchise tag on Vick earlier this year.

Vick passed for 3,018 yards and 21 touchdowns with six interceptions last season - his first as an NFL starting quarterback since 2006.

In 2007, Vick pleaded guilty to federal charges for his involvement in a brutal dogfighting ring.

Once he got out of prison, Vick joined the Eagles in 2009 as a third string quarterback but soon worked his way into the No. 1 role.

He started the 2010 campaign as the backup to Kevin Kolb but took over the starting job after the first game of the season. Kolb eventually was traded.

Vick was once a superstar with the Atlanta Falcons who drafted him first overall in 2001.

He signed a $130-million deal two years before his conviction that made him the top-paid player in the league at the time. After Vick went to jail, he filed for bankruptcy.

Vick was reviled by animal rights groups when he returned to the NFL but fans have for the most part given him a warm welcome for what he can do on the football field.

NFL 쿼터백 마이클 빅 '전과자에서 억만장자로'

소속팀과 1억 달러에 6년간 연장계약

미국프로풋볼(NFL) 필라델피아 이글스의 쿼터백 마이클 빅(31)이 연봉 대박을 터뜨렸다.

AP통신은 31일 필라델피아가 빅에게 6년간 1억 달러(약 1천72억원)를 주고 계약을 연장하기로 했다고 보도했다.

이로써 빅은 NFL을 대표하는 쿼터백 톰 브래디(뉴잉글랜드 패트리어츠), 페이튼 매닝(인디애나폴리스 콜츠)에 이어 NFL에서 세 번째로 많은 연봉을 받는 선수가 됐다.

2001년 신인드래프트 전체 1번으로 애틀랜타 팰콘스에 지명된 빅은 NFL 올스타전인 '프로 볼'에 2번이나 초대받을 정도로 팬들의 많은 사랑을 받았다.

하지만 빅은 2007년 투견 도박에 휘말리면서 나락으로 떨어졌다.

실제로 투견 도박을 주선하고 성적이 좋지 않은 투견을 도살처분한 범죄혐의가 입증돼 18개월간 징역형을 살고 출소했다.

소속팀인 애틀랜타와는 인연이 끊어졌고 보너스도 토해내야 했다.

2007·2008시즌을 좁은 철창 안에서 보내야 했던 빅은 '제2의 기회'를 잡아 필라델피아에서 화려하게 부활했다.

2009시즌에 베테랑 쿼터백 도노번 맥냅의 백업 요원으로 필라델피아와 160만 달러에 계약을 맺고 복귀한 빅은 2010시즌에도 백업 쿼터백으로 출발했다.

하지만 주전 쿼터백 케빈 콜브가 첫 경기에서 부상하면서 주전을 맡는 행운을 누린 뒤 11경기에서 8승을 이끌어 NFL '재기상(Comeback Players of the Year)'의 주인공이 됐다.

2010시즌에 성공한 터치다운 21개는 그의 한 시즌 최고 기록이었다.

빅은 복귀 후 완전히 달라진 모습을 보이고 있다.

예전처럼 스타의식에 젖어 거들먹거리지 않고 현실에 감사하며 누구보다 열심히 뛰었고 경기장 밖에서도 각종 선행에 앞장섰다.

빅의 달라진 모습에 필라델피아는 지난 2월 그를 프랜차이즈 스타로 눌러 앉히겠다고 공언했고 이번 계약으로 그 약속을 지켰다.

필라델피아의 앤디 리드 감독은 "빅과 계약에 합의할 수 있어 정말로 행복하다. 그가 앞으로 우리 팀에서 계속 잘할 거라는 데는 의심의 여지가 없다"고 말했다.
