Startups that lack integrity, shy from challenges fail, says NCsoft chief

Kim Taek-jin

Kim Taek-jin has seen the rise and fall of countless IT start-ups since he founded NCsoft, the gaming company for which he serves as president, 14 years ago. But Kim is a glaring success story, a survivor of the first generation of Korea’s dot-com-era entrepreneurs who rode the wave that first washed over the country 10 years ago.

He said many of his peers who fell by the wayside after some initial success suffered from a lack of integrity, noting that those who only focus on making money without continually challenging themselves will often falter.

He also praised the ability of the nation’s conglomerates to compete with major global players like Apple when other foreign companies have not been able to do so.

Kim also spoke about his wife, Yoon Song-yee, who became the youngest executive at SK Telecom before she joined her husband at NCsoft. Yoon now supports Kim as vice president of the company.

Q. Why do you think integrity is the key to survival?

A. There are a lot of people who work hard, but integrity is more important when it comes to work. One should work with such a keen sense of devotion that others see it as a kind of art. Most of the startup firms that failed lacked integrity.

Can you elaborate?

There was one startup I remember that began recruiting employees from leading conglomerates as it grew. But after these new recruits filtered in, the atmosphere there started to change.

An unhealthy drinking culture developed in the office, and the developers became unhappy with how things were changing. At one point, the employees started looking for new business areas as a pretext for indulging their social drinking, which ultimately led to the company’s downfall.

Another company found itself in a situation where, one night, groups of its employees were at the same room salon [a bar with hostesses as entertainers] in Gangnam, but people from one room to the next did not even realize they were colleagues. That is how bad the situation had become.

The company went under because it lacked integrity, regardless of the passion of its people or its technology. Once its employees lost their moral compass, they became weak.

So what are the main ingredients for success?

One should never become complacent but rather always stay hungry. And don’t be afraid to let others help you. It is the mentality of continuously challenging yourself that leads to success. I have not encountered one person who became successful by only focusing on making money.

Some insiders claim that software start-ups here struggle to make it because of the way the big conglomerates dominate the market. Is this the case? Can we say that the structure of the domestic economy prevents the rise a Korean Steve Jobs?

I hate those people who make such claims. Why do we dream of having people like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates? Isn’t it better to have our own story to tell? Most people, when talking about Steve Jobs, criticize Samsung. But let’s recognize those who should be recognized. Samsung is a great conglomerate. While other [foreign rivals] crumble, Samsung is the one able to hold its own against Apple. Where else can you find a company like that? In such a fiercely competitive market, why do we criticize our own companies that have made it to the top?

Some people may believe it makes them sound more intelligent to criticize the conglomerates, but the reality isn’t that simple.

Take Korea’s software industry. It is not fully mature yet. An environment that fully appreciates the importance of software and attracts the right talent has not yet been formed. Many talented people who could join it apply for law school or medical school instead and show no interest in applying for engineering majors.

Those who major in electronics join Samsung or LG after they graduate, but for computer programmers, there aren’t a great deal of opportunities. There are many structural problems contributing to the slow development of our software industry.

Another problem is a certain lack of vision. We have all these talented young people applying for medical school, and we could exploit this to build the nation into a global medicine hub. But because we don’t have this sense of vision, our hospital system continues to deteriorate. So we need to change the way we think.

NCsoft gets a lot of complaints from parents because so many teenagers are becoming addicted to gaming at the expense of their studies. How do you feel about this?

NCsoft is often cast in that light, - as the reason why young people are not achieving their potential. But the games we offer are designed for adults, not teenagers. Most of them can only be accessed by people aged 18 or older. At Internet cafes outside Seoul, there are a lot of elementary students. And in those regions, the children tend to hang out at PC rooms from the crack of dawn because both parents are too busy to take care of them properly. In that sense, I hope people would refrain from oversimplifying the problem.

Have you ever calculated your net worth?

Not at all. I have no hidden fortune, only my NCsoft shares. I don’t know what their total value is unless I work it out. I sold my shares once so I could give the money to my father. Honestly, I have no money in my pocket. I live like any other office worker who receives a monthly paycheck since all of my bank accounts are in my wife’s possession and she takes care of paying all my credit card bills.

How do you view your company’s sense of social responsibility?

The goal of NCsoft is to create joy and connect people around the world. This is also the reason why we decided to establish a baseball club.

What is it like working with your wife?

I spend most of my time in development, while my wife spends her time in management. It is good that we can support each other in this way.

I can’t lie to my wife since she tracks my location through my mobile phone wand. She knows who I meet. People around me ask how I can live in such a suffocating environment, but I am quite satisfied with my life. I think we are a good match.
