Soldiers to get lighter loads in four years

Military gear for soldiers will become lighter and more high-tech by 2025 as the Ministry of National Defense modernizes its forces.

According to the Army yesterday, the changes will be implemented in three steps with the first upgrade to be completed by 2015 by replacing the current gear for all soldiers.

Ten kilograms (22 pounds) from the gear soldiers are currently required to carry will be eliminated, bringing the total weight down to 38.6 kilograms. Old and heavy combat gear will be replaced with gear made from new materials.

The roughly 40 pieces of equipment subject to replacement will include tents, sleeping bags, shovels and ponchos that soldiers are required to carry in their full kits. The Army said that it hopes the change will strengthen combat abilities for soldiers and that the lighter load will allow them to be more agile.

A new kit worn during attacks, field maneuvers and training exercises is also under development, which includes a combat vest and combat rations. The kit can be detached from the full gear to help soldiers be quick on their feet.

Soldiers’ loads will be lighter, and they will be equipped with the latest technology. Equipment will be upgraded to make it “smarter” by 2020 - the second step of the upgrade - an Army official said.

For example, a helmet will be distributed to all soldiers that will enable them to see clearly in daylight and at night and allow real-time communication with commanding officers. When they wear the helmet, military command will be able to determine the soldiers’ locations.

Military combat uniforms will also eventually include bulletproof material and monitor soldiers’ vital signs. The uniforms will also effectively wick away sweat as they will have humidity-detecting sensors included.

By 2025, each soldier will “become a weapon system on his own,” the official said.

“To make this possible, we have formed and are running a concept team with officials from the Army, the Agency for Defense Development and the Korea Institute for National Analyses from June.”

2015년 육군 완전군장 10㎏ 줄인다

육군, 개인전투 장구 개선육군 병사들의 완전군장 무게가 2015년께 10㎏가량 줄어든다. 2025년까지는 주야간 투시경 및 음성 송·수신기 등 첨단 개인 전투장비도 병사들에게 지급된다.

육군 관계자는 30일 “2015년까지 1단계로 40여 개의 개인 전투장구 품질을 개선하고, 무게를 대폭 줄이기로 했다”며 “이에 따라 현재 48.7㎏인 완전군장 무게가 38.6㎏으로 줄어들 것”이라고 말했다. 군장의 무게가 줄면 장병들의 행동이 편해져 전투력이 향상될 것으로 육군은 기대하고 있다. 육군은 기존의 개인 천막과 배낭·야전삽·판초우의 등 전투 장구류에 강화 플라스틱 등 특수 신소재를 적용해 무게를 줄일 계획이다. 장병들의 완전군장에는 겨울철 29개, 여름철 27개의 장구가 들어간다.

군장도 현재의 자루형에서 여러 개의 가방을 탈·부착할 수 있는 형태로 바뀐다. 공격작전과 후방작전, 수색정찰, 5분대기, 매복·대침투작전 등 임무에 따라 활용하기 위해서다. 육군 관계자는 “그동안 병사들이 완전군장을 한 뒤 작전에 필요한 장구만 꺼내 사용하는 불편이 있었다”며 “장비가 새로 보급되면 지속 가능한 작전시간과 전투시간이 기존보다 세 배 이상 늘어날 것”이라고 설명했다.

　육군은 개인 전투장구의 개선이 완료되는 2025년에 영상 전송장치와 야간조준경, 복합형 소총, 발열 피복 등 첨단 전투장구를 병사들에게 지급할 예정이다. 통합 일체형 헬멧을 착용만 하면 주야간 상관없이 전방을 감시할 수 있고, 헬멧에 장착된 음성 송신기로 지휘부와 실시간 정보를 교환할 수 있게 된다. 방탄복은 첨단 신소재를 적용해 소구경 탄환이 뚫을 수 없도록 개발된다. 전투복의 경우 생체신호감지 센서가 부착돼 습도를 자동 조절하고 땀을 배출하게 된다. 육군 관계자는 “전투장구 개선을 위해 지난 6월부터 육군과 국방과학연구소·한국국방연구원이 참여하는 ‘통합개념팀’을 운용하고 있다”고 말했다.

◆완전군장(軍裝)=전투나 훈련 때 야전에서 기동하거나 생활할 수 있도록 개인의 모든 전투장비와 생필품을 갖춘 상태를 말한다. 일인용 텐트와 침낭 등 취침장비와 야전삽, 여벌의 전투복과 속옷, 취사도구 등을 배낭에 꾸린다.
