Park aims to make his mark in EPL

Striker Park Chu-young became the ninth Korean footballer to join the English Premier League after it was confirmed he signed with Arsenal on Tuesday.

“Now I have to show what I can do on the pitch,” the 26-year-old told the club’s Web site, www.arsenal.com. “I will do my best, show heart and give everything for this club,” added Park, who was signed one day before the summer transfer window closed.

He is Arsenal’s first new recruit in the wake of its disastrous 8-2 defeat to rival Manchester United on Sunday, which has left the North London team in 17th in the league after only three games.

Reports also came in yesterday that Arsenal was trying to sign U.S. star Clint Dempsey from rival Fulham. Two defenders - Germany center-back Per Mertesacker and Brazil left-back Andre Santos - were also on the hit list, reported The Associated Press.

But only Park had been confirmed by late afternoon. The 26-year-old striker has been searching for a new employer since AS Monaco was relegated to France’s second division last season.

He scored 25 goals in 91 games for Monaco over three seasons and was subsequently linked with European clubs Liverpool, Schalke 04 and Sevilla - yet nothing materialized as the transfer window loomed.

The move to the Gunners came as something of a surprise as Park looked set to be making a last-minute dash to current French champions Lille, after heading there for a medical recently.

The details of Park’s contract were not revealed, but the club said he will have J. Y. Park on the back of his No. 9 jersey as he prefers to be known as “Ju.”

He now ranks as the fourth active Korean in the Premier League alongside midfielder Park Ji-sung of Manchester United, Bolton Wanderers’ Lee Chung-young and Sunderland’s Ji Dong-won.

The London club’s French manager Arsene Wenger has been under pressure to strengthen the squad since the departure of former captain Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and attacking midfielder Samir Nasri to Manchester City.

“We are delighted to have signed Chu,” Wenger said. “He will add true quality to our attacking forces and will be a valuable addition to the squad.”

Park, who could debut as early as Sept. 10 against Swansea at the Emirates, is believed to have signed a two-year contract as he must perform his mandatory military service in 2013.

He played in the last two World Cups, has netted 17 goals in 53 games for Korea and took the captain’s armband after Park Ji-sung retired this year.

The Asian Football Confederation named him their Young Footballer of the Year in 2004 and he emerged as the top scorer in the K-League with 18 goals in 2005.

KBS commentator Hahn June-hea said Park must shift up a gear for the Gunners.

“The club is in trouble. It doesn’t have time to tolerate failure.”

‘아스날 입단’ 박주영 “많은 경기에 나오는 것이 목표”

"처음 벵거 감독님의 전화를 받았을 땐 안 믿었다. 축구 인생에 중요한 결정을 내렸다. 가진 것을 최대한 보여주기 위해 노력하겠다."

31일 파주대표팀트레이닝센터에서 만난 박주영(26)은 침착했다. 잉글랜드 프리미어리그 명문구단 아스널행이 성사된 직후였지만, 일말의 흥분도 동요도 느껴지지 않았다. 취재진을 상대로 팀을 옮긴 심경과 앞으로의 목표를 차분히 설명했다. 그런 그도 아스널 입단 과정을 설명할 땐 목소리가 살짝 떨렸다. 이적료와 연봉, 군 입대 등 온갖 변수로 인해 어려움을 겪었던 이적 과정이 머릿 속에 스친 듯했다.

"전화 통화를 하는 동안 벵거 감독의 목소리에서 '나를 생각해주고 있다'는 느낌을 받았다"고 설명한 박주영은 "내 축구 인생이 걸린 문제인 만큼 신중히 판단했다. 좋은 팀에서 좋은 선수들과 함께 뛰며 많은 것을 배울 수 있을 것으로 기대한다"는 소감을 밝혔다. 이어 "후회가 남지 않도록 내가 가진 것을 최대한 보여주겠다. 일차 목표는 가급적 많은 경기에 출전해 경험을 쌓는 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

대표팀 주장이기도 한 박주영은 "지금은 레바논과의 2014브라질월드컵 아시아지역 3차예선 첫 경기에 포커스를 맞춰놓고 있다"면서 "많은 것을 보여주기보다는 가진 것을 제대로 보여주기 위해 노력할 것"이라고 다짐했다. 우리 대표팀은 2일 오후8시 고양종합운동장에서 레바논과 맞대결을 갖고 월드컵 본선행을 향한 장도에 오른다.

-명문 아스널에 입단한 소감은

"워낙 좋은 팀 아닌가. 선수로서 나에게도 큰 자극이 될 것으로 기대하고 있다. 할 수 있는 한 최선을 다 할 생각이다."

-아스널 입단 과정을 설명해달라

"그쪽(아스널)에서 먼저 요청이 왔다. 이적이 성사될 지 알 수 없는 상황이었지만, 불발될 경우 모나코에서 더 뛴다는 생각으로 협상했다. 결과가 좋아 다행이다. 나를 불러줘 감사하고, 내 실력을 인정해줬다는 사실도 기쁘다."

-잉글랜드 프리미어리그 무대를 밟게 됐는데

"특별히 EPL 무대에서 뛰고 싶었다기보다는 좋은 팀에서 뛰길 바랐다."

-아르센 벵거 아스널 감독과 어떤 이야기를 나눴나

"특별한 이야기는 없었다. 대표팀에서 잘 하고 돌아와 좋은 모습 보여주길 바란다고 하더라."

-처음 벵거 감독의 전화를 받고 어떤 생각이 들었나

"솔직히 처음엔 안 믿었다. 그런데 이야기를 나누다보니 나를 생각해준다는 느낌이 들었다. 신중히 판단해 결정했다. 내 축구 인생에 중요한 일이니 선택에 후회가 남지 않도록 하고 싶었다."

-대표팀 후배 기성용이 '선배가 좋은 팀에서 뛰는 것이 후배들에게 동기부여가 된다'고 말했는데

"더 많은 선수들이 좋은 팀으로 가면 다른 선수들에게도 뛸 수 있는 기회가 그만큼 많이 열리는 것 아닌가. 책임감을 느낀다."

-아스널이라는 팀에 대한 느낌은

"예전부터 마음 속에 품었던 팀이다. 전술적으로도 내가 하고 싶은 축구와 일치한다. 젊은 팀이고, 패스 위주의 축구를 한다. 좋은 선수들과 훈련 뿐만 아니라 평소 생활도 함께하며 많은 것을 배울 수 있을 것으로 본다."

-첫 시즌 목표는

"일단 가급적 많은 경기에 나오는 것이 목표다. 많이 뛰다 보면 경험적으로도 얻을 것이 많지 않겠나. 나에게 어떤 역할이 주어지길 바라기보단 내가 가진 것들을 보여주기 위해 노력해야할 것 같다."

-새 팀 적응을 위해 어떤 노력을 할 것인지

"늘 하던 대로 최선을 다 하겠다. 자신감과 경기력 모두 발전의 여지가 남아 있다고 본다. 훈련하면서 차분히 끌어올리겠다."

-레바논전이 눈 앞으로 다가왔는데

"모든 포커스를 레바논전에 맞춰놓고 있다. 월드컵 예선 첫 경기인 만큼 모든 선수들이 중요성을 느끼고 있다. 많은 것을 보여주기보다는, 가진 것을 제대로 보여주고자 노력할 것이다. 주장으로서 코칭스태프와 선수들 사이를 잘 조율하겠다."
