Business leaders promise lots of new jobs to MB

Korea Inc. offered an olive branch to the government after months of touchy relations, saying it’s planning to hire a slew of new employees in the next few months.

The nation’s leading business lobbying organization, the Federation of Korean Industries, released a statement saying the nation’s top 30 conglomerates have decided to hire a combined 124,000 new employees by the end of this year, which is a record.

In the first half of the year, the conglomerates hired 68,000 new recruits.

The total figure for the year signifies a 12.7 percent increase from the 110,000 recruits hired by the top conglomerates in 2010.

The FKI’s statement was announced at a meeting of the heads of the nation’s top business groups with President Lee Myung-bak, including Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee and Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo, at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s headquarters in downtown Seoul yesterday.

Among the fresh hires, 35,000 will have high school diplomas but no college degrees, a 13 percent increase from a year earlier. In the first half, 18,000 recruits with just high school diplomas landed jobs at the conglomerates.

Additionally, the Korean tycoons told the president they intend to expand investment despite a slowing global economy affected by the instability in the United States and Europe.

Investment by the top 30 conglomerates this year is expected to reach 114.8 trillion won ($108 billion), up 14.3 percent from 2010.

In the first six months, conglomerates invested 50.7 trillion won, up 15.8 percent from a year earlier.

The meeting between the president and the top businessmen in the country came after a year of confrontation between the two sides. Burdened by falling public approval ratings and rising inflation, the president has commanded conglomerates to show more social responsibility by sharing growth with suppliers and contractors, hiring more and not muscling in on mom and pop businesses.

At the meeting, President Lee pressed the need for “shared growth” and “coexistence” between large and small companies.

“A capitalistic market economy can be safeguarded and our society could move forward when an environment of ecosystemic development is created,” President Lee said.

“Ecosystemic development” is a phrase the President coined to describe shared growth between businesses and in society as a whole.

The president stressed the need for businesses to voluntarily change their ways.

“We have to establish a voluntary culture instead of using laws or regulations,” the president said. “And the head of conglomerates should lead the positive change.”

The president also advised changes in the role of the FKI, which recently made headlines for an aborted plan to “sponsor” politicians it considered antibusiness.

“The role of the FKI in the success of the industrialization of Korea in the last half century is undeniable,” Lee said. “Regarding the FKI’s path in the next 50 years ... I hope the FKI considers itself more of a business organization. Only then will it win the affection and trust of the public.”

In an Aug. 15 Independence Day speech, Lee said the efforts of the FKI had fallen short of expectations.

In response, Huh Chang-soo, GS Group chairman and head of the FKI, said the business community agrees on the importance of shared development.

MB “공생발전, 기업 총수 앞장서야”

이명박 대통령은 31일 “공생발전하는 분위기를 만들어야 자본주의 시장경제를 지킬 수 있고 사회도 지속적으로 발전시켜 나갈 수 있다”며 “시혜적 협력이 아닌 윈윈(win-win)하고 함께 발전하는 생태계를 만들어야 한다”고 말했다. 대한상공회의소에서 30대 기업 총수들과 함께한 142분간의 오찬 간담회에서다.

이 대통령은 “공생발전이 시대적 요구”라는 말을 여러 차례 했다. 그러면서도 “법이나 규정, 제도를 가지고 하는 것보다 자발적 문화를 만들어야 한다”고 했다. 기업 스스로 변화해야 한다는 메시지였다. 이 대통령은 총수의 역할도 강조했다. “시대적 요구가 왔을 때 선순환으로 바꾸고 긍정적으로 변화시키는 데는 역시 총수가 앞장서야 한다. 총수들이 직접 관심을 가져주면 빨리 전파돼 긍정적인 평가를 받을 수 있다”고 했다. 현대가의 기부를 염두에 둔 듯 “이미 상당한 변화의 조짐이 있다는 걸 느끼고 있고 그런 점에서 고맙다”는 말도 했다.

　전국경제인연합회(전경련)에 대해선 “지난 반세기 동안 대한민국이 산업화를 통해 성공하게 된 데에는 전경련 회원사들의 역할을 부인할 수 없다”면서도 “향후 50년을 내다볼 때 전경련이 어떻게 나아가야 할 것인가에 대해 경제단체 측면에서 고민을 많이 해줬으면 한다. 그래야 국민의 신뢰와 애정을 받을 수 있다”는 ‘뼈 있는’ 말을 했다.

　허창수 전경련 회장은 “공생발전이 무엇보다 중요하다는 것에 우리 기업들도 모두 공감하고 있다”고 화답했다. 다른 대기업 총수들도 유사한 발언을 했다.

　▶이건희 삼성전자 회장=지금 경제 불안에 대한 우려가 많아 기업인으로서 무거운 책임감을 느끼고 있다. 이번 위기도 충분히 해결해 나갈 수 있을 거다. 앞으로 대기업·중소기업, 기업·사회가 공생하고 발전할 수 있는 길을 찾도록 노력하겠다.

　▶정몽구 현대자동차그룹 회장=기업의 사회적 책임을 다하기 위한 활동을 지속적으로 확대하겠다. 친환경차를 비롯한 새로운 성장동력에 대한 투자를 지속적으로 늘리도록 노력하겠다. 앞으로 2·3차 협력업체까지 지원을 강화해 건전한 기업 생태계를 만들겠다.

　▶구본무 LG그룹 회장=공생발전 취지에 공감한다. 투자·고용은 물론 동반성장을 위한 5대 과제를 선정해 추진하고 있다. 이런 활동이 결실로 이어지도록 꼼꼼히 챙기고 독려하겠다.

　▶최태원 SK그룹 회장=투자와 일자리를 꾸준히 늘리고 수출을 증진시켜 국가경제에 힘을 보태겠다. 우리는 주로 사회적 기업을 통해 공생발전을 실천하려고 한다.

　▶정준양 포스코 회장=앞으로 더욱더 강건한 공생발전 기업 생태계를 위해 향후 3년간 총 2600억원의 예산을 추가로 편성할 예정이다.

　박용현 두산그룹 회장과 박삼구 금호아시아나그룹 회장은 공생발전 방안 중 하나로 고졸자 취업에 적극 나서겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

　이 대통령은 간담회에 앞서 총수들과 환담하면서 친근감을 나타냈다. 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 위원인 이건희 회장을 보며 “오셨어요”라고 인사말을 건넸다. 평창 동계 올림픽 유치위원장이었던 조양호 한진그룹 회장이 “기업들이 후원금을 많이 내서 (겨울 올림픽 유치에) 도움이 됐다. 삼성이 많이 냈다”고 하자 이 대통령은 “IOC 위원이니까 당연히 많이 내야죠”라고 응수해 참석자들의 웃음보를 자극했다.

◆공생발전(Ecosystemic Development)=이명박 대통령이 지난달 15일 광복절 경축사를 통해 밝힌 국정운영 컨셉트. 무한경쟁의 시장경제나 방만한 복지국가를 모두 극복하겠다는 새로운 국가발전 모델이다. 이대통령은 “탐욕경영에서 윤리경영으로, 자본의 자유에서 자본의 책임으로, ‘부익부 빈익빈’에서 ‘상생번영’으로 진화하는 시장경제 모델이 필요하다”고 강조했다.
