First peek into Kim Jong-il’s train

Kim Jong-il’s train, including one of his personal cars, made a rare appearance on North Korea’s official broadcast station Tuesday night.

Korean Central Television aired a 28-minute-long documentary on the North Korean leader’s latest trip to Russia. It went on to show the train car in which Kim greets guests and issues instructions to his subordinates while travelling.

Inside Kim’s train car was a desk, a map of the Korean Peninsula and plush chairs lining one of the walls.

In the documentary, Kim was pictured in a compartment receiving flowers from Russian officials such as presidential envoy Viktor Ishayev after he arrived in the Russian urban settlement of Khasan on Aug. 20.

The footage also showed Kim talking with Vyacheslav Nagovitsyn, president of the Russian Republic of Buryatia, inside the train on Friday.

Experts claimed Kim’s train car was the same as that depicted in a book by Konstantin Pulikovsky, a Russian emissary who traveled with Kim during a previous trip to Russia in 2001. Pulikovsky said in his book that the car was a special gift from Joseph Stalin to Kim Il Sung and that the car is equipped with a satellite navigation system, satellite TV and a telephone. The floor is reportedly made of bulletproof material.

북, 김정일 전용열차 이례적 공개

바닥에 방탄 철판 깔아

북한이 김정일 국방위원장이 러시아 방문 때 탔던 특별열차의 내부 모습을 공개했다.

북한 관영 조선중앙TV는 지난달 30일 김정일의 방러(8월 20~26일)를 선전하는 28분짜리 ‘기록영화’에서 전용열차의 집무 공간을 방영했다. 김정일 업무용 책상과 한반도 지도가 등장하는 스크린을 갖춘 이곳은 2004년 4월 김정일의 중국 방문 때도 조선중앙TV가 공개했다.

　2001년 여름 김정일의 러시아 방문 때 수행한 콘스탄틴 풀리콥스키 러시아 대통령 전권특사가 자신의 저서에서 김정일 열차의 바닥에 방탄용 철판이 깔려 있고 영화 감상과 전자지도로 쓰이는 스크린이 2개 있다고 소개한 바 있다.

　조선중앙TV 화면에는 방러 첫날 북·러 국경 하산역에 도착한 김정일을 빅토르 이샤예프 극동연방 관구 대통령 전권대표 등이 꽃다발을 건네며 맞는 모습 등이 나온다. 정부 당국자는 “북한 주민들에게 김정일의 방러 성과를 선전하는 가운데 자연스럽게 열차 모습이 드러난 것으로 보인다”고 말했다. 북한은 과거 선전화보를 통해 김일성(1994년 사망)과 아들 김정일이 전용열차 내부에서 노동당과 군부 핵심 간부들과 함께 있는 모습을 수차례 공개한 바 있다. 대북 정보 관계자는 “전용열차의 핵심 시설은 경호·암호통신 장비 등이 실린 칸”이라며 “김정일 집무 공간의 경우 공개해도 큰 문제가 없다는 판단에 따라 조선중앙TV가 종종 방영하는 것으로 분석된다”고 말했다.
