Taeguk Warriors await desert duel with Kuwait

Korea thrashed Lebanon 6-0 on Friday in third-round qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, but head coach Cho Kwang-rae said it is time to forget the result and concentrate on tomorrow’s game against Kuwait.

Korea, now 33rd in the FIFA rankings, put on a great show in front of 37,000 home fans at Goyang Stadium in Goyang, Gyeonggi. Team captain and striker Park Chu-young tallied a hat trick against Lebanon, while Sunderland forward Ji Dong-won struck twice and Kim Jung-woo also found the back of the net.

Park, who joined Arsenal earlier this week, opened the scoring just eight minutes in and made it 2-0 just before halftime. The 26-year-old got his third goal with a right foot in the 67th minute to complete his hat trick.

The victory also eased fans’ concern after Korea’s humiliating 3-0 loss to archrival Japan in a friendly last month.

Cho said he was happy to see the team put a spring back in its step and gel more cohesively.

“With the strong support of the fans, we were able to put on a good show despite the [injuries we were dealing with],” Cho said in a post-match interview. “We will try to maintain a team that can show its best at each of the qualifiers.”

Within just two hours of the final whistle, the team was at Incheon International Airport waiting to board a flight to Kuwait, the nation’s second opponent in Group B. It took nearly 14 hours to arrive at the Arab nation, but the Taeguk warriors were already on the training field yesterday.

Reporters there described the session as light for those players who started against Lebanon, but more intense and tactical for Friday night’s bench-warmers.

After training, Cho said the team would not be underestimating Kuwait, and that the weather and pitch conditions at the stadium would present further difficulties.

“Our players are mentally stable after collecting a big win against Lebanon,” Cho told Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper.

“But the match against Lebanon is already past and we need to prepare ourselves thoroughly in order to beat Kuwait.”

Cho said he analyzed the video from Kuwait’s first qualifier against the United Arab Emirates upon arriving there and drew players’ attention to the main threats.

“Kuwait displays some interesting technique and there are a number of young players who are capable of putting some pressure on us with their energetic performances,” Cho said. “They are also good at counter-attacking.”

‘버스·잔디·날씨’ 3중고 겪는 축구국가대표팀

집 나가면 고생이란 말이 있다. 쿠웨이트 원정을 떠난 축구 국가대표팀도 여러 가지 어려움에 시달리며 쿠웨이트와 일전을 준비하고 있다.

대표팀 버스 바뀐 사연

3일(한국시간) 쿠웨이트에 도착한 대표팀은 황당한 경험을 했다. 공항에서 5분 거리에 있다는 숙소까지 도착하는 데 한 시간 가까이 시간을 허비했다. 쿠웨이트 축구협회로부터 소개받은 업체의 버스기사는 대표팀 숙소까지 가는 길을 찾지 못해 빙빙 돌았다. 숙소 근처에 와서도 호텔 앞이 막혀 있다는 이유로 한참 시간을 끌었다. 레바논전이 끝나는 대로 14시간이나 비행기를 탄 선수단의 휴식시간을 빼앗기니 조광래 감독이 폭발하는 것은 당연한 일. 축구협회 관계자는 "조광래 감독이 내가 현역 때 중동 원정을 다닐 때 있던 일이 아직도 있다"고 강하게 화를 냈다고 전했다.

결국 대표팀은 버스 업체와 계약을 취소하고 다른 버스를 구해야했다. 6월 요르단 암만에서 원정경기를 치른 올림픽축구대표팀 또한 비슷한 고초를 겪었다. 요르단축구협회가 암만 시내에 산재한 경기장들을 놔두고 굳이 암만에서 1시간 떨어진 자르카에 훈련구장을 배정한 탓에 우리 대표팀은 경기를 앞두고 체력과 시간을 허비해야만 했다. 경쟁이 치열한 대표팀 경기에서는 때때로 상대팀을 지치게 하는 비신사적인 방법이 동원되기도 한다.

잔디가 다르네

대표팀은 레바논전을 앞두고 파주 NFC 대신 고양종합운동장에서 훈련했다. 잘 관리된 파주와는 달리 듬성듬성 구멍이 나 있어서였다. 대표팀은 아예 고양에서 훈련을 하며 나쁜 그라운드 상태에 적응하는 방법을 택했다.

쿠웨이트에서도 대표팀의 잔디 고민은 이어지고 있다. 비가 적고 햇볕이 강한 중동의 잔디는 잎이 가늘고 길이가 짧다. 그래서 볼이 굴러가는 속도는 더 빠르고 바운드는 약하다. 관계자는 "훈련장인 이곳(모하메드 알 하마드 스타디움)이나 쿠웨이트전이 열린 피스앤프렌드십 스타디움이나 비슷하다. 중동 지역에서 자라는 잔디가 이 종류이기 때문"이라며 훈련장과 경기장의 잔디 차이는 크지 않을 것이라고 설명했다.

일반적으로 공이 굴러가는 속도가 빠르면 패스로 경기를 전개하는 대표팀에 유리하다. 그러나 그라운드의 딱딱한 정도, 공의 바운드 등도 다르기 때문에 홈팀보다 유리할 수는 없다. 또 낯선 잔디에서 부상을 당하지 않도록 조심해야 한다.

무덥고 건조한 날씨

중동 특유의 날씨도 한국 대표팀이 극복해야 할 장애물이다. 이곳은 9월이지만 최고 기온 40도가 넘는 더위가 이어지고 있다. 습도는 20% 아래를 맴돌만큼 낮다. 훈련시간과 경기시간이 현지 기준으로 오후 8시지만 수은주는 여전히 30도 이상을 가리켰다.

같은 중동권이지만 1월에 아시안컵을 치른 카타르와는 또 다른 환경. 지동원은 "공항에 도착한 뒤 너무 더워서 놀랐다. 아시안컵 때보다 더 덥다"고 말했다. 가만히 서 있기만 해도 사우나에 있는 것 같은 압박이 느껴질 정도다. 조광래 감독은 "날씨가 상당히 덥다"며 빠른 현지 적응 훈련을 할 의사를 밝혔다.
