The IAAF World Championships ended its nine-day run with high attendance rates, despite worries otherwise, and without major hitches, save some poor planning that drew criticism from event spectators and tourists.

The organizing committee said the overall attendance rate for the games was 90.8 percent, with the 200-meter final, in which Usain Bolt ran, seeing 99.2 percent of the stadium filled. During the nine-day event, 411,111 people visited the stadium out of a total of 452,902 tickets available.

“Daegu citizens’ assertive participation in the event fulfilled our goal of ‘no empty seats’ and it surely upgraded the image of the city,” the organizing committee said in a press release.

Predictions of low attendance in the run-up to the event had left organizers scrambling to fill seats and avoid embarrassment.

While local residents helped fill the stadium, the city government and local business groups sought to draw foreign tourists with various cultural experience programs.

One of the most popular programs among overseas tourists was the temple stay offered by Dongwha Temple on Mount Palgong. Participants stayed in the Buddhist temple and experienced Buddhist traditions firsthand through rites and meditation.

Another popular program was the city tour, with visits to Yangnyeongsi in Jung District, which attracted tourists wishing to see or purchase traditional medicinal herbs such as ginseng, milk vetch root and Korean angelica. Daegu said about 67,000 foreign tourists in total enjoyed the temple stay and city tour programs.

“The most interesting program was the temple stay at Dongwha Temple,” a Canadian tourist said.

However, the event’s food and shuttle services were criticized for poor planning.

According to the JoongAng Ilbo, restaurants inside the stadium offered food options, such as fried rice and jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), at exorbitant prices. Prices ranged from 6,000 won to 10,000 won per meal.

The stadium’s premier restaurant, designated for premium seat ticket holders, was supposed to provide 23,000 won ($21.60) worth of free food and beverages but ran out of meals because of poor demand forecasting.

A “buffet” restaurant, which was designated for media, only offered four kinds of dishes and charged customers 13,000 won.

In contrast, during the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, the average food price at Guangzhou International Sports Arena was 1,700 won.

Due to the high price and low quality of food inside Daegu’s stadium, many visitors settled for instant noodles at convenience stores.

The event’s free shuttle buses, which ran between the stadium and several subway stations, also was criticized for poor management. The organizing committee distributed time tables to foreign visitors but changed the schedule without notice, forcing visitors to wait for extended periods of time and often in wrong locations.

“Though there were some mistakes in running the event, it was a meaningful event for the city because the city could rise as a global city through the event,” said Synn Il-hi, president of Keimyung University in Daegu.
