Hockey world shocked by plane crash tragedy

The world of ice hockey was in shock and grief after suffering its “darkest day” when a plane carrying the Russian team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl crashed on Wednesday, killing 43 people and leaving just two survivors.

“This is a terrible tragedy for the global ice hockey community with so many nationalities involved,” Rene Fasel, president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, said in a statement posted on the federation’s Web site. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims.”

The plane was taking members of the Kontinental Hockey League team to a game in Minsk, Belarus, when it crashed a few miles from the airport at Tunoshna outside Yaroslavl, Russia, 250 kilometers (150 miles) north of Moscow.

Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said two people had survived and were in critical condition.

One of the survivors is Lokomotiv winger Alexander Galimov, who hospital doctors said was in a critical condition with burns on more than 90 percent of his body. The other survivor, a crew member, was also in critical condition.

Lokomotiv’s squad included players and coaches from several countries including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Germany and Canada.

“Despite the substantial air travel of professional hockey teams, our sport has been spared from tragic accidents,” Fasel said. “But only until now. This is the darkest day in the history of our sport. This is not only a Russian tragedy.”

Czech players Jan Marek, Karel Rachunek and Josef Vasicek, all members of the national team that has won the world championship six times since 1996, died, the Czech embassy in Moscow said.

The Slovak foreign ministry said Pavol Demitra, one of their country’s top talents, had been on the passenger list. Officials also said Lokomotiv’s Swedish goaltender Stefan Liv and German international defenseman Robert Dietrich had died.

Lokomotiv’s coach, Canadian Brad McCrimmon, was also on the passenger list issued by Russian authorities.

McCrimmon had only joined the Russian club in May after working in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings.

Former Red Wings players defenseman Rusaln Salei and Liv were also on the flight.

“It is a huge loss for the hockey world. It’s very tragic,” said Swede Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit’s Norris Trophy-winning defenseman.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the tragedy affected the entire hockey world. “Though it occurred thousands of miles away from our home arenas, this tragedy represents a catastrophic loss to the hockey world - including the NHL family, which lost so many fathers, sons, teammates and friends who at one time excelled in our league,” Bettman said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of all who perished.”

One of the NHL teams affected was the Los Angeles Kings, with two former players on board the plane.

“The Los Angeles Kings organization is deeply saddened with the tragic news of this morning’s plane crash in Russia that was carrying the members of the KHL’s Lokomotiv organization, including former Kings forward Pavol Demitra, former Kings prospect Jan Marek and many other members of the NHL family,” the organization said on a statement posted to its Web site.

The tragedy even reached Florida, where the NHL’s Panthers mourned the loss of three former players.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those families who have lost loved ones in this tragic and unfortunate accident,” the team’s Web site said.

전 세계 아이스하키계가 러시아 프로아이스하키팀 전세기 추락 참사에 큰 충격과 슬픔에 빠졌다.

8일(한국시간) 러시아 프로아이스하키팀 로코모티브 야로슬라블 소속 선수단을 실은 전세기 추락사고로 43명이 사망하고 2명이 생존했다는 소식을 전해들은 국제아이스하키연맹 리네 파셀 회장은 홈페이지를 통해 "이번 사고는 여러 나라가 연계돼 있는 국제아이스하키계의 끔찍한 비극이다"고 애석해 했다.

아이스하키 선수들을 태운 사고기는 유라시아 프로아이스하키리그 개막전을 위해 야로슬라블을 출발, 벨라루스의 수도 민스크로 갈 예정이었다. 이 사고기는 야로슬라블을 이륙한지 얼마 되지 않아 추락했다.

러시아 비상상황부는 "두 명은 구조됐으나 이들도 생명이 위독하다"고 밝혔다.

생존자 중 한 명은 로코모티브의 공격수 알렉산더 갈리모프다. 의료진은 “그는 몸에 90% 이상의 화상을 입어 생명이 위독한 상태”라고 전했다. 다른 생존자 역시 심각한 상태인 것으로 알려졌다.

로코모티브는 체코, 스웨덴, 슬로바키아, 독일, 캐나다 등 여러 나라의 선수들로 구성돼 있다.

파셀 회장은 "그간 프로하키 팀의 오랜 비행에도 불구하고 비극적인 사고는 없었다"며 "그러나 행운은 거기까지였다. 오늘은 스포츠 역사상 가장 암울한 날이다. 이것은 러시아의 비극만은 아니다"고 밝혔다.

모스크바 주재 체코 대사관 관계자는 "이번 사고로 목숨을 잃은 얀 머렉, 캐럴 라흐첵, 요셉 바시크 등 국가대표 선수들은 1996년부터 월드챔피언십에서 6차례나 우승했었다"고 희생자들을 기렸다.

슬로바키아 외교관도 “슬로바키아에서 가장 뛰어난 파볼 데미트라가 탑승자 명단에 있다. 희생된 슬로바키아 선수는 한 명이다”고 말했다.

스웨덴 출신 스테판 리브와 독일의 유명 수비수 출신인 로버트 디트리치도 사망한 것으로 확인됐다.

캐나다 출신 브래드 맥크리멈 감독도 탑승자 명단에 들어 있었다.

맥크리멈 감독은 지난 5월 북미아이스하키리그(NHL) 디트로이트 레드 윙스를 떠나 로코모티브에 합류했다.

니콜라스 리드스톰 레드 윙스 감독은 "세계하키계에 커다란 손실이다. 매우 비극적이다"며 애통해 했다.

NHL 개리 베트먼 커미셔너는 "이번 비극은 전 세계 하키계에 영향을 미칠 것이다. 비록 우리의 홈 경기장과는 수천마일 떨어진 곳에서 사고가 났지만 이번 비극은 전 세계 아이스하키계에 치명적인 손실이다"고 말했다.

이번 사고로 옛 동료를 잃는 등 가장 많은 충격을 받은 팀은 LA킹스다. 킹스는 성명서를 통해 파볼 데미트라와 얀 머렉 등 두 선수가 희생됐다고 밝혔다.

이번 비극은 심지어 팬더의 연고지인 플로리다까지 전해졌다. 옛 동료 3명을 잃었다.

플로리다 팬더 관계자는 "비행기 추락 소식을 접한 직후 깊은 충격과 슬픔에 빠졌다. 팬더에서 뛰었던 알렉산더 카포체프, 루슬란 살레이, 카릴리스 스크라스틴스를 한꺼번에 잃었다"고 말했다.

그는 "우리는 비극적이고 불운한 사고로 사랑하는 가족들을 잃은 모두를 위해 기도하고 있다"고 애도했다.
