Murder most foul suspected as missionary dies

A South Korean missionary working in northeastern China has died of poisoning after collapsing in the street, igniting suspicion of foul play involving North Korean spies.

The 47-year-old, identified as G, fell to the ground on Aug. 21 while waiting for a taxi in front of a department store in Dandong, in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province, a source in Dandong told the JoongAng Ilbo.

He died later in a hospital. China has reported his death as a suicide.

Less than 24 hours later, another South Korean man, identified as K, was poisoned in a neighboring province. In a compelling plotline that sounds like it was borrowed from a Jason Bourne movie, the man, who was protesting human rights abuses in North Korea, claims to have been stabbed by a poison-tipped needle. Unlike G, he survived.

Sources claim China has tried to hush up the affair.

“The hospital said that G died after being poisoned, but the Chinese authorities have tried to turn it into a suicide,” said a source close to the case.

G’s family informed the authorities that he did not have any health complaints, prior illnesses or any reason to commit suicide as he was a man of faith, the source added.

Although there is no concrete evidence to support their claim, skeptics believe both were the victims of North Korean agents working to silence voices of dissent.

“This may be a deliberate attack against missionary work to help North Koreans,” said a source close to the South Korean investigators who are looking into the two cases.

G, whose activities in the area were unclear, had been working close to the porous North Korean border, where refugees often seep through seeking safe harbor in China or points of transit to South Korea.

One day after, K, a 59-year-old activist protesting human rights abuses in Yanji, collapsed in the street in the neighboring Chinese province of Jilin and was rushed to hospital.

K later said he had been attacked after leaving a sauna, according to South Korean authorities. He claimed that someone approached him from behind and poked a needle into his side of his waist when he was opening his car door, they added. Doctors later confirmed he had been poisoned.

K had been openly protesting the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il before the alleged attack took place, said a source in Yanji. He was working closely with ethnic Korean-Chinese and North Korean refugees there, the source added.

G’s death looks likely to remain shrouded in mystery as his family has called for the case to be closed, according to the South Korean consulate in Sunyang.

“I believe the victim’s family wanted to close the case quietly for fear of endangering others,” said an official at the consulate.

“대북 선교사 단둥서 독극물 피살”

북한과 인접한 중국 동북3성 일대에서 선교 활동을 해온 우리 교민이 지난달 의문의 죽음을 당한 것으로 드러났다. 또 북한 인권 개선 운동을 펼쳐온 다른 교민도 비슷한 시기에 독침 피습을 받았다가 가까스로 목숨을 건진 것으로 밝혀졌다.

우리 당국은 이 두 사건이 선교사와 대북 인권운동가를 겨냥한 북한의 계획된 연쇄 테러일 가능성에 주목하고 있다. 이 때문에 북한 접경 지역에서 활동하고 있는 수많은 선교사, 인권운동가, 탈북자 지원 관련 인사들의 안전에 비상이 걸렸다.

　중국 랴오닝(遼寧)성 단둥(丹東)의 소식통은 8일 “북한을 상대로 선교 활동을 해오던 G씨(46)가 지난달 21일 단둥의 한 백화점 앞에서 택시를 기다리던 중 갑자기 쓰러져 숨졌다”고 전했다.

그는 “병원에서 G씨가 독극물에 중독돼 숨졌다는 얘기가 있었는데 나중에 중국 공안 당국이 자살로 몰아갔다고 들었다”고 전했다. 유가족들은 G씨가 지병도, 자살할 이유도 없다며 의문을 제기하고 있다. 이에 대해 선양 총영사관 측은 “정확한 사망 원인을 확인할 필요가 있었는데도 최종 확인이 안 된 상태에서 (중국 당국에 의해) 사건이 종결된 것으로 알고 있다”며 “(다른 선교사들에게) 더 큰 피해가 가는 것을 걱정한 유가족들이 조용한 처리를 원했던 것으로 보인다”고 말했다.

이와 관련, 한 대북 소식통은 “병원에서 1차로 독극물 중독 가능성을 거론했던 점에 비춰 독침이나 독극물이 든 음식물을 통해 살해됐을 수 있다”며 “대북 선교 활동을 막기 위한 계획된 공격 가능성을 배제할 수 없어 주시하고 있다”고 전했다.

　지난달 22일에는 옌볜(延邊)조선족자치주의 중심 도시 옌지(延吉)의 주차장에서 인권운동가 K씨(58)가 자신의 승용차에 타려던 순간 괴한의 주사기 공격을 받고 쓰러졌다. K씨는 병원으로 긴급 호송돼 생명의 위기는 넘겼다. K씨는 “갑자기 누군가가 다가와 주사기로 옆구리를 찔렀다. 병원에서 의사들이 체내에서 독극물이 발견됐다는 말을 하는 것을 들었다”고 우리 당국의 조사에서 진술한 것으로 전해졌다. 옌지 소식통에 따르면 K씨는 북한의 인권 개선을 위해 조선족과 북한 주민을 상대로 활동해 왔다.

　우리 당국은 두 사건이 하루의 시차를 두고 북한과 국경을 마주한 중국 동북 3성에서 발생한 점, 독극물 공격 가능성이 있는 점에 주목하고 있다. 그러나 문제의 사건이 중국에서 발생해 우리 당국의 직접 조사가 어려워 진상 규명이 쉽지 않은 상황이다. 1996년에도 기아자동차 부설 직업훈련원의 박병현(당시 54세) 원장이 옌지에서 피살됐으나 아직도 진상이 규명되지 않고 있다.

　이에 따라 북한과 접경 지역에서 활동하고 있는 우리 교민들의 안전 확보가 시급하다는 지적이 나오고 있다. 단둥의 한 교민은 “중국에서 선교활동은 위법 행위여서 위험 요인이 많다” 고 주의를 촉구했다. 게다가 현지 교민들은 최근 들어 현지 북한 측 인사들이 탈북자 지원 관련 단체는 물론 대북 선교사들의 활동에 극도의 반감을 갖고 “반드시 응징하겠다”는 위협을 직간접적으로 가해왔다고 전하고 있다.

◆박병현씨 피살 사건=1996년 8월 16일 당시 중국 지린(吉林)성 옌볜(延邊)조선족자치주 옌지(延吉)기아자동차기술훈련원장으로 있던 박씨가 퇴근길에 괴한 2명으로부터 테러를 당해 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 숨졌다. 엉치 부위에만 외상이 발견돼 독침을 맞았을 가능성이 제기됐다. 주중 한국대사관의 수사 의뢰를 받은 중국 공안 당국이 부검을 실시했으나 독극물이 검출되지는 않았다. 중국으로부터 시체를 넘겨받은 우리 국립과학수사연구소가 재부검했으나 장기 전부가 중국에서 이미 제거된 데다 방부처리된 상태여서 정확한 사인을 규명하는 데 실패했다.
