Three Parks eyeing Champions League slots

Three Korean footballers are hoping to make their marks in the UEFA Champions League this season. But it is veteran Park Ji-sung who has the best chance of collecting his second European trophy with Manchester United.

The 30-year-old hasn’t played much this season as he has been crowded out by English international Ashley Young on the left wing.

He has only featured as a sub in two games for the Red Devils. But during one of these - United’s soul-crushing 8-2 drubbing of Arsenal last month - the former Korea captain poked the ball into the net.

While his goal does not guarantee more playing time, pundits are now predicting he will land a role in the Champions League Group C qualifying match against Portuguese club Benfica tomorrow at 3:30 a.m. (KST) as manager Alex Ferguson relies on his older players to secure the opening game.

“The opening game is the toughest for us,” Ferguson said on United’s Web site on Monday. “I think we’ll need to have more experience in the game.”

As Park enters his ninth Champions League - including the last seven with United - he will be hoping for more of the tournament luck he enjoyed earlier in his career.

He scored against AC Milan in the 2005 semifinal when playing for PSV Eindhoven, then became the first Asian to wear the winners’ medal in 2008 with United, despite not featuring in the final.

He became the first Asian to do so the following year when Barcelona routed United 2-0.

Meanwhile, Arsenal striker Park Chu-young and Park Joo-ho, who plays for Swiss outfit Basel, are ready to make their tournament debuts.

New signing Chu-young, who did not debut as expected against Swansea over the weekend, was included in Arsenal’s 18-man squad on Monday to face Borussia Dortmund in today’s Group F qualifier, which took place at 3:30 a.m. This would make the Korea captain the sixth of his countrymen to experience the world’s most prestigious club competition.

Since Seol Ki-hyeon, who now plays for Ulsan Hyundai in the K-League, became the first Korean to do so with Belgium club Anderlecht in 2001, Song Chong-gug, Lee Chun-soo, Lee Young-pyo and Park Ji-sung have followed in his footsteps.

Meanwhile, leftback Joo-ho, 24, became the first Korean to play in Switzerland when he inked a four-year deal with Basel in June.

The Korean international has suffered minor injuries after moving from Japanese club Jubilo Iwata, but he was able to recover completely and play full games from last month. Basel faces Romanian outfit Otelul Galati tomorrow at 3:30 a.m. (KST) in Group C, the same group as United.

박지성-박주영, UEFA 챔피언스리그 '출격준비 끝'

한국 축구대표팀의 전·현 '캡틴'인 박지성(맨체스터 유나이티드·이하 맨유)과 박주영(아스널)이 2011-2012 유럽축구연맹(UEFA) 챔피언스리그 무대에서 어떤 활약상을 보여줄지 한국 팬들의 관심이 커지고 있다.

아스널과 맨유는 각각 14일 새벽(이하 한국시간)과 15일 새벽 도르트문트(독일)와 벤피카(포르투갈)를 상대로 UEFA 챔피언스리그 조별 리그 1차전을 치른다.

이번 시즌 UEFA 챔피언스리그에는 박지성과 박주영 외에 바젤(스위스)에서 뛰는 박주호까지 총 3명의 태극전사가 나선다.

◇박지성 '노장의 관록' 보여줄까 = 박지성의 맨유는 15일 오전 3시30분 포르투갈의 명문 벤피카와 조별리그 C조 1차전 원정 경기를 치른다.

박지성은 네덜란드 PSV에인트호벤 소속이던 2003-2004 시즌부터 지난 시즌까지 8년 연속 챔피언스리그 본선 무대를 밟았다.

남들은 한 번도 밟아볼까 말까 한 챔피언스리그 무대가 박지성에게는 이번이 벌써 9시즌째다.

박지성은 이번 시즌 맨유가 치른 프리미어리그 정규리그 4경기 중 2경기에 교체출전해 1골을 터트렸다.

알렉스 퍼거슨 감독이 새로 영입한 애슐리 영을 왼쪽 측면에 붙박이로 내보내면서 박지성은 아직 선발출전의 기회를 잡지 못한 상태다.

하지만 퍼거슨 감독은 13일 구단 홈페이지를 통해 "첫 경기는 항상 힘든 만큼 벤피카 원정에는 경험이 많은 선수를 데려갈 작정"이라고 말해 누구보다 챔피언스리그에서 강한 모습을 보여온 박지성의 출전에 청신호를 켰다.

박지성은 지난 시즌 정규리그(5골 3도움)와 컵 대회(커뮤니티실드 포함 2골 2도움), UEFA 챔피언스리그(1골 1도움)를 합쳐 공격포인트 14개(8골 6도움)를 기록하며 역대 한국인 프리미어리그 한 시즌 최다 공격포인트를 달성했다.

이를 바탕으로 이번 시즌 구단과의 재계약에 성공하고, 부상이 없는 완벽한 몸 상태에서 아스널을 상대로 시즌 1호 골까지 터트린 만큼 이번 벤피카 원정에서 '노장의 관록'을 확실히 보여줄 전망이다.

◇박주영 UEFA 챔피언스리그서 '아스널 데뷔전' 치를 듯 = 박주영은 아스널 데뷔전을 UEFA 챔피언스리그에서 치를 것으로 예상되고 있다.

박주영은 14일 오전 3시30분 예정된 도르트문트와의 UEFA 챔피언스리그 F조 1차전 원정에 나설 18명의 아스널 출전선수 명단에 이름을 올렸다.

아스널은 이날 홈페이지에 "도르트문트전에 나설 18명의 스쿼드에는 새로 계약한 박주영과 미켈 아르테타, 페어 메르테사커, 요시 베나윤, 안드레 산토스가 포함했다"고 밝혔다.

이적팀의 조건으로 UEFA 챔피언스리그 출전팀을 내걸고 아스널 유니폼을 입은 박주영은 지난 주말 스완지시티와의 정규리그 4라운드 홈 경기에서 교체명단에 이름을 올렸지만 출격 기회를 잡지 못했다.

경기 당일에야 워크퍼밋(노동허가증)이 발급돼 출전 준비가 덜 됐던 박주영은 팀이 1-0으로 이긴 박빙의 승부가 펼쳐진 경기에서 출전 기회를 잡지 못했다.

이 덕분에 결과적으로 몸 컨디션을 충분히 끌어올린 박주영은 아스널 데뷔전 무대를 UEFA 챔피언스리그에서 치를 가능성이 커졌다.

도르트문트에는 일본 대표팀의 가가와 신지가 주전 공격수로 뛰고 있어 박주영과의 '미니 한일전'도 기대된다.

박주영은 지난달 10일 한·일전에서 가가와에게 2골이나 내주며 0-3으로 완패한 쓰라린 기억을 갖고 있다.

도르트문트는 구단 홈페이지를 통해 공개한 베스트 11에서 가가와를 4-2-3-1 전술의 섀도 스트라이커로 낙점해 박주영만 출전 기회를 얻으면 '미니 한일전'이 성사된다.

한편 스위스리그 바젤에서 뛰는 박주호는 15일 새벽 오텔룰 갈라티(루마니아)와의 조별리그 C조 1차전 홈 경기를 준비한다.
