In Gangnam, mosquitoes are facing the music

테스트

Mosquitoes, that ever-present pest capable of sullying an otherwise fine summer evening, are becoming a year-round nuisance thanks to global warming and well-developed home heating systems.

Now, spurred by complaints from residents, one local government has come up with novel approaches, like ginkgo leaf extracts and ultrasonic waves, to fight the itch.

In tony Gangnam District in southern Seoul, 23,000 septic tanks have become tropical destinations for mosquitoes, which can lay more than 150 eggs at a time and can extend their itty-bitty lives by burrowing and reproducing in warm places when the weather turns cold.

After receiving 3,000 complaints on average a year, the district in late 2009 tasked a specially created research team with preventing mosquito reproduction in environmentally -friendly ways.

Jang Sun-sik, the lead researcher, and five others on the team braved the bites and explored mosquito habitats from septic tanks to underground sewage systems.

The most cost-efficient and eco-friendly method, the team discovered, was using ginkgo leaves, which have chemical properties that sterilize and kill mosquitoes.

After noticing that ginkgo trees rarely had mosquitoes or cicadas around them, Jang and his team placed large packets of ginkgo leaves around septic tanks in Gangnam buildings.

Their experiment was a success.

“We found that ginkgo leaves certainly kill mosquito larvae,” Jang said. “It saves money because we don’t have to spend a lot of money purchasing chemical pesticides, which are also not good for people’s health and nature.”

The research team has also found that using devices that emit ultrasonic waves disturb mosquito reproduction, displacing the bugs with high frequency sounds.

In addition, the district has begun planting insect-proof flowers, such as lavender and rose geraniums, in public parks.

A single insect-repelling plant, the office said, can block mosquitoes’ approach within 16.5 square meters (177.6 square feet).

“Considering the rate of mosquito reproduction, exterminating a larva is much more effective than killing some thousands of mature mosquitoes,” Jang said. “We will continue to work on finding more methods for mosquito extermination.”
