Sumi Jo tells all on local talk show
Rumors about the singer’s possible pregnancy followed concert cancellations in recent months.
Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of the KBS talk show “Kim Seung-woo’s Seung Seung Janggu,” the renowned singer revealed that she discovered she was infertile after she was diagnosed with a uterine fibroid (benign tumor) the day before a performance of “Lucia di Lammermoor” in Sydney, Australia, in 2003. She cancelled the performance, but didn’t reveal the reason at the time.
Jo also revealed other details of her personal life on the program. She said she was expelled from Seoul National University because of her low grades, although she had entered the school at the top of her class. She said her grades fell because she was madly in love with her first boyfriend, who broke up with her a few months after she left Korea to study music in Italy.

조수미 "나는 임신할 수 없다"
소프라노 조수미(49)가 불임판정을 받았다고 고백했다.
13일 KBS 2TV `승승장구`에 출연, 4년 전 호주 시드니에서 예정된 공연을 취소한 사연을 전하며 "당시에는 건강상의 이유라고만 했지만 사실은 자궁근종이 굉장히 심했고 하혈을 너무 해 무대에 설 수 없었다"며 "웬만하면 참고 무대에 나가지만 그때는 상태가 너무 심각했다. 빈혈이 심해 쓰러지기 직전이었다"고 털어놓았다.
"몸 상태에 대해 자세하게 말하는 게 너무 사적인 부분이라 구체적으로 이야기하지 않았더니 오해를 받았다"면서 "몸이 너무 안 좋았고 대타가 있는 걸 알고 취소했는데 다음날 시드니 신문 1면에 내가 공연을 취소하고 도망갔다는 기사가 났다"고 해명했다.
이후 한동안 임신설에 시달린 조수미는 "몸상태와 정반대의 소문이 나서 황당했다"면서 "차라리 임신이었으면 좋았겠지만 아기를 가질 수 없다"고 말했다.
그러면서도 "큰것을 이루면 보이지 않는 희생이 항상 따르는데 난 그것을 희생이라고 생각하지는 않는다. 그간의 어려움을 구구절절 얘기하고 싶지 않다. 그저 아름다운 프리마돈나로 남고 싶다"며 톱스타의 면모를 잃지 않았다.
