Nationwide manhunt seeks Pohang burglars

The police have launched a nationwide manhunt for two men who allegedly stole 425 million won ($383,000) in cash and jewelry from a house in Pohang, North Gyeongsang, Pohang Southern Police said yesterday.

The two men were filmed making off with 415 million won in cash and 10 million won worth of jewelry at around 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 by CCTV cameras installed at the house in Haedo-dong, Pohang.

According to Pohang police, the men are believed to be in their early 20s. One suspect is around 170-175 centimeters (5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches) in height and was seen in a white T-shirt and jeans with a sleeve protector on his left upper arm, thought by the police to be covering a tattoo. The other suspect, roughly five centimeters shorter than his partner, was wearing a black shirt with jeans and black sneakers.

The nationwide search was launched yesterday, two weeks after Pohang police began trying to track down the suspects by placing wanted posters around Pohang.

The police said the two men had broken into the house, which was empty at the time, by breaking the handle on the back door.

The cash was stashed inside a gift bag and hidden on top of a wardrobe in the bedroom.

When asked why the 68-year-old owner of the house, surnamed Park, kept such a large amount of cash at home instead of in the bank, police told reporters, “Park said he kept the money in his house because he doesn’t usually use banks.”

Park told police during questioning that the money was his retirement savings, accumulated over two years.

The Pohang police said they have formed a task force for the case and are questioning people with related criminal records as well as suspects who are acquainted with Park.

전 대기업 회장 친척집 4억 털이 20대 용의자 둘 공개 수배

포항 집근처 골목 CCTV에 포착

경북 포항남부경찰서는 가정집에 침입해 현금 4억여원 등 금품을 훔쳐 달아난 용의자 2명을 14일 공개수배했다. 이들은 지난달 31일 오후 2시30분쯤 포항시 남구 해도동 박모(68)씨의 단독주택에 침입해 현금 4억1500만원(5만원권 8300장)과 목걸이·반지 1000만원어치 등 4억2500만원 상당의 금품을 훔친 혐의를 받고 있다.

　경찰은 피해자 집 골목의 폐쇄회로TV(CCTV) 화면과 방안에 찍힌 족적 등을 근거로 20대 초반으로 보이는 두 명을 용의자로 추정하고 있다. 이들 중 한 명은 키 170∼175㎝에 흰색 티셔츠와 청바지를 입고 있다. 또 왼쪽 팔뚝에는 토시를 끼고 있다. 경찰은 팔에 있는 문신을 가리기 위한 것으로 추정했다. 다른 한 명은 키 165~170㎝에 검정 티셔츠와 청바지를 입고 있으며 스포츠 브랜드인 ‘헤드’의 검은색 운동화를 신고 있다.

　경찰은 이들의 인상착의가 담긴 전단 2000부를 만들어 포항지역 금은방과 전당포·PC방 등에 배포했다. 또 강력계의 4개 수사팀 26명으로 전담반을 꾸려 용의자를 추적하고 있다. 경찰은 대낮에 가정집에 침입해 거액을 훔친 점으로 미뤄 절도 전과자의 소행으로 보고 있다. 특히 지난 4월 인근 대도동에서 발생한 가정집 도난 사건 현장에서 같은 족적이 나온 점에 주목하고 있다. 용의자들은 박씨가 집을 비운 틈을 타 뒤쪽 출입문 손잡이를 부수고 침입해 안방 장롱 위 마대에 담긴 현금을 현장에 있던 선물상자 포장용 가방에 담아 달아났다.

　사건이 알려지자 돈의 성격을 놓고 논란이 이어지고 있다. 거액을 은행에 맡기지 않은 데다 마대에 담아 허술하게 보관한 점이 이해할 수 없다는 반응들이다. 경찰 관계자는 “박씨가 고철을 철강회사에 판매해 큰돈을 모았으며 대기업 회장을 지낸 박모씨의 사촌동생”이라고 말했다.
