Manchester clubs off to slow Champions start

PARIS - Manchester United and rivals Manchester City both failed to get off to winning starts on Wednesday in the Champions League as they were both held 1-1 by Benfica and Napoli, respectively.
Napoli at least managed to grab a point away from home, better than their Serie A rivals and 2010 champions Inter Milan, who suffered a stunning 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Champions League debutants Trabzonspor from the Turkish Super Lig.
Trabzonspor were only in the group stage because rivals Fenerbahce were kicked out over a domestic match-fixing scandal.
There were no such problems for other former champions Bayern Munich and Real Madrid as the Germans secured a fine 2-0 away win at Villarreal while Real beat Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 away.
City manager Roberto Mancini said that the occasion had perhaps gotten to his players.
“We wanted to win, but the Champions League is hard,” he said.
United also started well against Benfica, but last season’s finalists failed to take their chances, whereas Paraguayan striker Oscar Cardoso made no mistake for the hosts to break the deadlock.
Cardoso expertly controlled an incredible pass from the outside of Nicolas Gaitan’s left foot and fired home from the edge of the box after turning Jonny Evans.
United levelled just before halftime through the evergreen Ryan Giggs as he cut in from the right and fired home from outside the box, raised the bar higher as the oldest player to score in the competition at 37 years and 289 days, beating his own mark set in April.
The Welsh great also set another benchmark, making it 16 Champions League campaigns he has scored in, breaking the mark he shared with former Real Madrid icon Raul.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that Giggs’ goal had settled them down.
“Once we scored, we played well,” he said. “Our possession was too cautious in the first half. It was the kind of possession that gives you a certain control but doesn’t win you the game.”
Meanwhile, Korean midfielder Park Ji-sung played the entire 90 minutes for the first time this season but was relatively ineffective.
On Wednesday, Inter could not break down the Trabzonspor defense and the hosts were left stunned when Czech right back Ondrej Celustka gave the visitors the lead in the second half.
Trabzonspor’s former Turkey national coach Senol Gunes said the difference had been that his players were not intimidated by the star-studded Inter.
“It’s not enough just to have great players like Inter have in [Esteban] Cambiasso, [Giampaolo] Pazzini and [Wesley] Sneijder - anything can happen on the pitch.”
Real took their time to assert their authority over Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, who were making their first appearance in the competition in 11 years. Zagreb held out until Argentine winger Angel di Maria struck in the 53rd minute to give Madrid the win.
Bayern Munich, who will host this season’s final, made a dream start away at Villarreal with German international Toni Kroos and Brazilian right back Rafinha giving the German team a 2-0 victory.

선발 박지성, 아쉬움 컷던 풀타임 출전
박지성(30·맨체스터 유나이티드)은 올 시즌 프리시즌에서 3골 1도움이라는 눈부신 활약을 펼쳤다. 그러나 시즌 초반 알렉스 퍼거슨 맨유 감독은 검증된 박지성보다는 새로 팀에 가세한 애슐리 영에게 적응할 기회를 줬다.
시즌 초반 프리미어리그 4경기에서 박지성은 2번 출전했다. 모두 승리가 확정적이던 후반 중반 이후였다. 후반 36분(토트넘전 3-0승), 후반 22분(아스널전 8-2승)에 출전해 몸을 풀듯 컨디션을 조절했다.
그런 점에서 15일(한국시간) 오전 포르투갈 리스본 에스타디오 다 루즈에서 열린 유럽축구연맹(UEFA) 챔피언스리그 본선 C조 1라운드 벤피카전은 박지성에게 뜻깊은 경기였다. 올시즌 첫 선발 출전이기 때문이다.
하지만 결과는 좋지 않았다. 맨유는 90분 동안 유효 슈팅 2개만 기록했다. 1-1 무승부로 승점 1점을 챙겼지만 내용에서는 완패였다. 박지성은 경기가 끝날 때까지 풀타임 그라운드를 누볐지만 아쉬움이 더 많이 남는 경기였다.
◇유효슈팅 2개… 맨유 빈공
경기 내내 무기력했다. 올시즌 프리미어리그 4경기에서 무려 18골을 작렬하며 4연승을 달린 맨유답지 않았다.
최전방 공격수로 출전한 웨인 루니는 벤피카 수비에 고립돼 이렇다할 슈팅 한 번 하지 못했다. 중원에서 경기를 풀어줄 선수가 없어 수비까지 내려와 공을 따냈다. 그러나 혼자서는 역부족이었다. 특급 도우미 애슐리 영이 교체명단에도 빠진 게 타격이 컸다. 영이 없자 맨유의 공격 속도는 급격히 느려졌다. 팀 플레이에 의한 빠른 공격이 사라졌다.
전반 24분 벤피카 공격수 오스카르 카르도소에 선제골을 허용했다. 0-1로 뒤진 전반 42분 라이언 긱스의 왼발 중거리슛이 골망을 갈랐지만 조직력이 아닌 개인 기량에 의한 골이었다.
◇공격 활로 못찾은 박지성
박지성은 경기 초반에는 왼쪽 측면 미드필더로 뛰었다. 0-1로 리드를 허용한 전반 24분 이후에는 중앙으로 진출했다. 공격형 미드필더로 출전한 라이언 긱스와 계속해서 자리를 바꿔가며 '센트럴 팍' 역할을 했다. 중원에서 공격과 수비를 매끄럽게 연결하는 자리다. 하지만 벤피카의 빠른 공격을 막느라 정신이 없었다. 헤딩슛을 한차례 시도했지만 상대 수비수에 밀려 위협을 주지는 못했다. 최전방 공격수 웨인 루니를 향한 날카로운 패스도 없었다. 후반 30분 오른쪽 수비 도중 그라운드에 미끄러져 상대 공격수를 놓치기도 했다.
영국 매체 맨체스터 이브닝뉴스는 ‘퍼거슨 감독은 활동량이 좋은 박지성을 믿고 출전시켰다. 하지만 박지성은 올 시즌 맨유가 보여준 공격력을 보여주지 못했다’는 평가와 함께 평점 6점으로 혹평했다.
