Auto designers start their career engines in Italy

For three students with a lifelong passion for cars, winning the grand prize at the Ferrari World Design Contest in July was like a dream come true. But now the three designers are off on their next adventure with positions at major auto design firms in Italy.

The three designers - Ahn Dre, 25, Kim Cheong-ju, 23, and Lee Sang-seok, 22 - all majored in industrial design at Hongik University.

Ahn has been hired by Pininfarina S.p.A, and Kim and Lee will soon start internships at the Ferrari Design Center in Milan.

The team, which beat 200 other teams to win the contest, also won a separate design award given by Autodesk Inc., a U.S.-based 3-D design and engineering software company.

Their task was to design a Ferrari for the future. They said they put a lot of thought into how to make their design and materials suitable for what they imagined would be more stringent environmental regulations in 2025. Ahn came up with the overall concept while Lee was in charge of design details and Kim was in charge of the interior design.

Lee said the design, named “Eternita,” or “eternity,” received excellent marks for both form and function.

“We verified that the design was technically feasible and this resulted in good marks from the judges,” Lee said.

But they said the key to their win was their education, which places equal emphasis on both design and technology. The industrial design program at Hongik University includes online classes once a week in the intersection of design with engineering and product development. The classes are part of an international program called PACE, developed in partnership with Aachen University of Technology in Germany in 2009. Through the program, students at both schools take classes together and participate in exchange programs during school breaks.

“A good thing about the program is that we get to exchange opinions with engineers and learn to communicate our ideas accurately,” Ahn said.

All three designers say they’ve loved cars since they were young. Ahn said he’s “been drawing pictures of cars every day since I was four” and Lee said he could distinguish the names of most of the cars on the street from an early age. He even wrote a regular column for a car magazine when he was in middle school. Lee also has a license to be a Formula1 marshal.

Ahn studied at alternative schools and later worked at an auto-repair shop. In 2005, after reading an article about the Ferrari Contest, he decided to go to college and entered Hongik University in 2008.

Kim started out as a fine art major but later turned to car design.

Now that they’ve won the competition, they say they still have one dream in common.

“In the film ‘Scent of a Woman,’ Al Pacino says he wants to drive a Ferrari before he dies. Someday, I’d like to design a car like that,” Kim said.

홍대 자동차광 트리오, 이탈리아 디자인센터 진출

한국 대학생 3명이 이탈리아 페라리 디자인센터와 자동차 디자인 전문업체인 피닌파리나 센터에 진출한다. 지난 7월 페라리 월드디자인 콘테스트에서 대상을 탄 홍익대 산업디자인학과 안드레(25), 김청주(23), 이상석(22) 학생이 그 주인공이다. 안씨는 피닌파리나 센터에, 다른 두 학생은 페라리 디자인 센터에서 다음 달부터 인턴으로 일한다.

　“네 살 때부터 날마다 자동차를 그렸다”(안드레), “기억이 남아 있는 두세 살 때부터 자동차를 좋아했다”(이상석)는 이들은 모두 자동차광이다. 심사위원들은 이들의 작품 ‘에테르니타’에 대해 ‘기능성과 작품성을 모두 만족시켰다’고 평가했다.

　이씨는 “외관 디자인뿐 아니라 이를 기술적으로 구현할 수 있는지 검증한 게 좋은 평가를 받았다”고 설명한다.

　이들은 ‘미래의 페라리를 디자인하라’는 과제에 맞게 2025년 환경규제에 적합한 신소재가 무엇인지 연구했다. 서로 아이디어를 평가하면서 검증하기도 했다. 분업도 도입했다. 안씨가 전체적인 컨셉트를 잡았고 바퀴·부품과 같은 세부 디자인과 3차원(3D) 스캔은 이씨가 맡았다. 내부 디자인은 김씨가 전담했다.

　이들은 “디자인과 기술이 융합된 교육을 받은 게 힘이 됐다”고 입을 모은다. 홍익대는 독일 아헨공대와 함께 국제산학협력지원프로그램(PACE)을 2008년 도입했다. 두 학교에 개설된 ‘디자인·공학 협업 제품개발’ 과목은 매주 한 번씩 인터넷 화상수업을 한다. 방학에는 상대 학교를 15일간 방문하면서 독일과 한국의 예비 디자이너들이 협업을 체험한다.

　안씨는 “그냥 ‘멋있게 해봐’ 식의 추상 표현이 아니라 엔지니어와 의견을 주고받으며 상대방에게 정확한 의사전달을 하는 방법을 배운 게 일반 수업과 다른 장점”이라고 설명했다. 이들을 지도한 산업디자인학과 정주현 교수는 “자동차 디자인은 기술적 이해가 중요한데 학생들이 이 수업을 통해 경쟁력을 갖게 됐다”고 덧붙였다.

　세 명에게 자동차는 신(神)과 같다. 이씨는 “어릴 때부터 지나가는 자동차 모델은 귀신같이 맞혔다. 중학교 때는 자동차 전문잡지에 고정 필진으로 기고했다”고 말한다. 그는 모터스포츠 포뮬러원(F1) 운영요원인 ‘마셜’ 자격증을 갖고 있다.

　안씨는 중·고교 과정을 대안학교에서 마친 후 자동차가 좋아 정비공장에서 일하며 어깨너머로 기술을 배웠다. 2005년 자동차 잡지를 보다가 페라리 콘테스트 기사를 보고는 대학 진학을 결심해 검정고시를 봐 2008년 입학했다. 김씨는 순수 미술을 전공하려다 자동차 디자인을 택한 경우다. 그는 “자동차는 전 세계 어느 길거리에서도 볼 수 있는 디자인이라는 게 매력”이라고 했다. 이들의 공통된 포부 한 가지! “영화 ‘여인의 향기’에서 알 파치노가 죽기 전에 몰고 싶은 차가 페라리였죠. 누군가에게 그런 꿈이 되는 차를 디자인하고 싶습니다.”
