Vacation days dog entertainer Boom
Lee, whose stage name is Boom, took quadruple the number of vacation days of other enlisted men while serving in the military, according to data released Monday by Democratic Party lawmaker Shin Hak-yong.
The data includes information on the work performance of TV entertainers who have served in the military since 2008, as well as their rewards or punishments.
Lee was given 150 vacation days during his 665 days of military service. Other enlisted men get only about 35 vacation days.
But Lee wasn’t the only one benefiting from an excessive amount of vacation days. Andy, of the K-pop group Shinhwa, who will be discharged from the military next month, has received 110 vacation days. Choiza (Choi Jae-ho) and Gaeko (Kim Yoon-sung) of Dynamic Duo received 129 and 117 vacation days, respectively, before being discharged in August.
“Well-known TV entertainers who are asked to participate in the military’s public relations campaigns get more rewards,” a Ministry of National Defense spokesperson told Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the JoongAng Ilbo. “Under this system, the more events an enlisted man participates in, the more rewards he receives.
“We now acknowledge this is a problem and will consider ways to make the system more fair.”

붐, 군복무중 무려 150일 휴가…형평성 논란 확산
방송인 붐(이민호·29)이 일반 병사의 4배가 넘는 휴가로 도마에 올랐다.
19일 국회 국방위원회 소속 민주당 신학용 의원은 2008년 부터 현재까지 군에 입대한 연예사병의 근무 평정·체력훈련·사격 점수·포상·징계 내역 분석 결과를 공개했다.
분석 결과 붐은 복무 기간 중 150일 휴가를 받았다. 이 외에도 다이나믹듀오 멤버 최자와 개코는 각각 129일·117일, 다음달 전역을 앞둔 신화의 앤디는 110일의 휴가를 받았다. 신 의원은 분석 결과와 함께 '연예 사병이라는 특성을 감안해도 너무 형평성에 맞지 않다. 일반 사병들은 포상 한 번 받기 힘든데 지나친 면이 있다'고 문제를 제기했다.
결과에 따르면 붐은 1년 10개월(665일) 여의 복무중 22.5%를 휴가로 보냈다. 통상 일반 병사들이 신병 휴가를 포함, 1·2·3차 정기 휴가까지 35일의 휴가를 다녀오는 것에 비해 4배가 넘는 수치다. 이는 일반 사병은 꿈도 못 꿀 일이다.
일부에서는 '전역날 방송까지 동원해 환영해주고 나오는 프로그램마다 군 얘기를 빼놓지 않더니 어떻게 된 것이냐'며 '휴가 일수에 실제 휴일까지 빼면 정말 군생활을 제대로 한 게 맞는 것인지 의심스럽다'고 전했다. 또 '붐이 최근 전역후 각종 프로그램에서 군필자라는 점과 군생활 중 겪은 에피소드를 들려줬던 것에 대해 배신감을 느낀다'는 의견도 있었다.
이와 관련해 국방부 측은 '국방 홍보 지원 연예 병사의 포상휴가는 개인별 표창 수여 실적에 따라 군인 복무규율 등 관련 규정에 근거해 실시하고 있다'며 '홍보 지원 대원은 업무 성격상 대외활동이 많은 병사일수록 표창수상의 기회가 많아 일반병사보다 포상휴가가 빈번하게 실시됐다. 국방부 근무지원단은 이러한 문제를 인지하고 금년부터 일반 병사와 형평성 등을 고려해 대외 표창의 경우 자체 심의후 휴가를 집행하고 있다'고 밝혔다.
한편 붐 소속사 측은 "휴가를 나와도 부대에서 불러 다시 들어가는 일이 많았다"며 "공식적으로 알려진 건 150일 이지만 실제 마음 놓고 휴가를 즐긴 일수는 그 보다 훨씬 적다"고 전했다.
