Argument erupts over Radcliffe’s record

LONDON - Marathon authorities opposed on Tuesday a move by the IAAF, which governs world athletics, to reclassify Paula Radcliffe’s 2003 women’s world record and replace it with a slower time.

The International Association of Athletics Federations agreed in Daegu last month to only acknowledge times for women’s world records that were set in all-women competitions.

Performances achieved in mixed fields would instead be referred to only as a “world best.”

The rule change, due to come into effect in January, would see Radcliffe’s record of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds set in London in 2003 downgraded to a world best, while the Briton’s time of 2 hours, 17 minutes and 42 seconds - set in London in 2005 - would become the new record.

World Marathon Majors (WMM) and the Association of International Marathons (AIMS) said in a joint statement that they felt the IAAF Congress decision “does not represent what is required by the sport of road running.”

The WMM is made up of the Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York marathons, while AIMS represents more than 300 races worldwide.

The two bodies said they would continue to recognize both types of performances as world records and would discuss the matter further with the IAAF.

“The current situation where the fastest time is not now recognized as a record is confusing and unfair,” they added.

여자 마라톤 세계기록, 기준 변경으로 '2분 후퇴'

남자 페이스메이커 없이 뛴 경우만 세계기록 인정여자 마라톤의 세계기록이 국제육상경기연맹(IAAF)의 기준 변경으로 2분 이상 뒷걸음질하게 됐다.

AFP통신은 IAAF가 여자 마라톤에서 남성 페이스메이커 없이 뛴 경우에만 세계기록을 인정해주기로 지난달 결정했다고 21일 보도했다.

IAAF는 남자 페이스메이커가 함께 뛴 레이스에서 나온 기록은 '세계기록(World Record)' 대신 '최고기록(World Best)'으로만 인정하기로 했다.

대한육상경기연맹의 한 관계자는 최고기록 개념에 대해 "IAAF가 정한 공식 레이스가 아니거나 자격 요건을 채우지 못한 경기, 또는 감독관을 파견하지 않은 경기에서 나온 기록을 의미하는 것으로 보인다"고 설명했다.

예컨대 실외 50ｍ나 150ｍ, 100야드 경기, 직선 주로로 구성된 200ｍ 등이 최고기록만 인정되는 대상이 될 수 있다는 것이다.

올해 4월 보스턴 올림픽에서 제프리 무타이(케냐)가 세운 2시간3분02초의 신기록도 대회 운영 방식과 코스 경사도가 IAAF 기준에 맞지 않아 최고기록으로만 인정받았다.

새 규정이 내년 1월 발효되면 파울라 래드클리프(영국)가 2003년 런던마라톤에서 남성 페이스메이커와 함께 달려 작성한 2시간15분25초의 세계기록은 최고기록으로만 남게 된다.

대신 래드클리프가 2005년 같은 대회에서 뛴 2시간17분42초의 세계 3위 기록이 새로운 세계기록으로 인정받는다.

세계기록이 2분17초 후퇴하는 셈이다.

그러나 세계메이저마라톤(WMM)과 국제마라톤연맹(AIMS) 등 각종 대회를 개최하는 마라톤 단체들은 이러한 결정에 반발하고 있다.

이 단체들은 성명을 통해 "로드 레이스의 특성과 역사를 무시하는 불공정한 처사"라고 IAAF를 비난했다.

이들은 "다수의 여자 마라톤 레이스가 남성 페이스메이커와 함께 뛰는 방식으로 이뤄진다"면서 "차라리 남자가 함께 뛴 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우를 나눠 세계기록을 인정하는 것이 맞다"고 주장했다.
