In annual rankings, two colleges see gains

Chung-Ang University made the top 10 list of Korean universities, and Sungkyunkwan rose to the No. 5 slot, tying with Korea University, according to the 2011 college rankings by the JoongAng Ilbo, which were released yesterday.

It is the first time Sungkyunkwan University has ranked in the top five since the annual JoongAng Ilbo rankings began in 1994. It is also the first time for Chung-Ang University to be in the top 10.

Kaist grabbed the No. 1 spot for the fourth consecutive year. Postech in Pohang, known as Korea’s MIT, ranked No. 2, followed by Seoul National University and Yonsei University, whose rankings were unchanged from last year.

To mark its 46th anniversary, the JoongAng Ilbo evaluated 100 four-year universities throughout the country, compared to 93 last year.

Universities were graded on a scale of 350 points including educational quality (110 points), globalization (60 points), faculty research achievements (110 points) and reputation and alumni representation in society (70 points).

The JoongAng Ilbo’s evaluation team gathered data on the 100 universities via an online system. The assessment of research achievements is done by the National Research Foundation of Korea.

This year, Sungkyunkwan University became one of the country’s top five colleges, catching up with the all-time “Big 3” - Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University.

In terms of faculty research, Sungkyunkwan ranked third for science and technology research and fourth for research in social sciences. It ranked fifth for excellence in lectures in English. It also got good scores for giving many scholarships.

Chung-Ang University, which made the top 10 for the first time, was able to raise its score by having the most number of research papers published in international journals, with 1.8 paper per professor.

Seoul National University’s score was only one point higher than Yonsei’s.

The rankings, which began in 1994, are an annual event marking the anniversary of the JoongAng Media Network’s foundation. They are intended to improve the competitiveness of Korean universities.

고려·성균관대 공동 5위 … 중앙대는 첫 톱10 올라

2011 대학평가 … KAIST·포스텍·서울대·연세대 1~4위

2011 중앙일보 대학평가에서 고려대와 성균관대가 전국 4년제 대학 공동 5위에 올랐다. 성균관대가 5위를 한 것은 1994년 중앙일보 대학평가 시행 이후 18년 만에 처음이다. 중앙대도 최초로 ‘톱10’에 이름을 올렸다.

KAIST는 4년 연속 수위를 차지했고, 포스텍(POSTECH, 옛 포항공대)·서울대·연세대는 각각 2, 3, 4위로 지난해와 순위가 같았다.

　이번 대학평가는 본지가 창간 46주년을 맞아 전국 4년제 대학 100곳(지난해 93곳)을 대상으로 했다. 교육여건(110점), 국제화(60점), 교수연구(110점), 평판·사회진출(70점) 등 4개 부문 점수를 합산(총 350점)해 종합성적을 매겼다. 본지 대학평가팀은 온라인시스템을 가동해 각 대학 자료를 받았으며, 한국연구재단 등이 분석한 연구 실적 관련 자료는 대학과 상호 검증 과정을 거쳤다.

　올해 평가에선 이공계 특성화 대학인 KAIST·포스텍을 뺀 ‘빅3’(서울·연세·고려) 아성에 성균관대가 진입한 것이 특징이다. 성균관대는 과학기술 및 인문사회 교수 1인당 국제논문 수가 각각 전국 3, 4위로 뛰어올랐다. 영어강의(5위)와 장학금 지급률(6위)도 상승해 2001년부터 10년간 6위였던 종합순위를 끌어올렸다. 서울대와 연세대 간의 격차도 근소했다. 종합순위 10위에 오른 중앙대는 교수연구와 국제화 부문에서 각각 7, 8위를 기록했다. 특히 인문사회 국내 논문 수가 교수당 1.8편으로 1위에 오른 것이 결정적인 힘이 됐다.

10~20위권의 선의의 경쟁도 치열했다. 수도권 대학 중에서는 인하대와 아주대가 선전했다. 인하대는 과학기술 논문·지식재산권 등 교수연구 부문에서, 아주대는 학생 1인당 교육비·도서자료 구입비 등 교육여건 부문에서 강세를 보였다. 동국대·서울시립대·숙명여대는 국제화와 교수연구 부문이 개선되면서 2년 연속 약진했다. 발전 속도가 가장 빠른 곳은 광운대(41→28위)였다. 대학별 종합순위는 ‘중앙일보 대학평가 홈페이지’(www.jedi.re.kr)에서 확인할 수 있다.
