Tablo unveils solo comeback
Tablo announced yesterday that he has signed a four-year contract as a solo artist under YG Entertainment and that his first album will come out on Nov. 1.
Tablo’s wife, actress Kang Hye-jeong, is also signed to the label.
The album will mark Tablo’s return to the local music industry after almost a two-year hiatus amid controversy surrounding the credibility of his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University.
Last year, the musician was accused of faking his degrees by various online communities such as one called “We Want Tablo to Tell the Truth.” Through an exclusive one-on-one interview and investigation, the Korea JoongAng Daily confirmed that the musician’s academic credentials are legitimate.
Regarding his decision to switch labels, the move was reportedly influenced greatly by his wife.
Tablo debuted in Korea in 2003 as a member of hip-hop group Epik High, along with other members Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz. Regarding Tablo’s future with the band, YG said he has signed a four-year contract with the label as a solo artist, but that they are open to future projects with Epik High.
DJ Tukutz finished his mandatory military service this summer and Mithra Jin is scheduled to finish his next May. The band is signed to Map the Soul, the label that Tablo owns.

타블로, 솔로 앨범 발표하며 2년 만에 컴백
가수 타블로(본명 이선웅·31·사진)가 11월 1일 첫 솔로 정규 앨범을 발표한다. 학력 위조 논란으로 무대를 떠난 지 약 2년 만이다. 타블로는 2년 전 미국 스탠퍼드 대학을 졸업한 학력이 위조 논란에 휩싸였었다.
이 논란은 일부 네티즌의 거짓 댓글에서 비롯된 해프닝으로 지난해 말 일단락됐지만, 그는 “더 이상 무대에 설 자신이 없다”며 가수 활동을 잠정 중단했었다. 타블로는 “2년 가까이 무대를 떠났다가 대중 앞에 다시 선다는 게 많이 두렵다. 그 동안 많이 힘들었지만 누구를 탓하는 마음은 추호도 없다”고 말했다.
타블로는 가수 복귀를 선언하면서 빅뱅·2NE1 등이 소속돼 있는 YG엔터테인먼트와 손을 잡았다. YG 측은 27일 “타블로와 4년 전속 계약을 체결했다. 그 동안 비밀리에 타블로의 솔로 앨범 제작을 지원해왔다”고 밝혔다.
타블로가 YG를 택한 데엔 아내인 배우 강혜정(29)씨의 역할이 컸다고 한다. 강씨 역시 YG 소속 연기자로 활동 중이다. 타블로가 YG에서 솔로 음반을 내기로 하면서 그가 리더로 활동하던 힙합그룹 ‘에픽하이’의 앞날은 불투명해졌다. YG 관계자는 “지금으로선 타블로와 솔로 계약만 체결한 상태라 ‘에픽하이’의 행보에 대해선 결정된 게 없다”고 말했다.
