Tired Jeon makes not breaks news
KBS broadcast music at 5 a.m. for about 50 seconds before other staff reporters stepped in.
“Since Jeon is working with so many different programs, he fell asleep momentarily as he was waiting to go on,” said Bae Jae-seong, director of KBS’s public relations team.
Staff routinely take it in turns to deliver the news and the incident prompted some to complain that they were generally overburdened. “The department is now discussing ways of effectively distributing work among the different staff members,” Bae said.
“It’s not that he was negligent with his work, but he was in charge of overnight duty yesterday and fell asleep. Jeon said he set his alarm but he was too tired to hear it,” said Kim Sung-soo, head of KBS’s announcing team.
Jeon delivered his apology to the public through a KBS FM show that he was MCing on a temporary basis from last week.
“Most of the other announcers manage their workload no matter what [pressure they are under],” Jeon said on the radio. “I’m deeply sorry and I feel like I have tarnished the name of all the announcers. I’ve also submitted written apology, and I will use this as an opportunity to reflect on what I did wrong.”
Bae added that “regardless of the excuse, Jeon will be punished for not showing up on time.”
Jeon appears on a handful of KBS shows including “Vitamin” and “Qualifying Men.” He also worked on the show “1 Night, 2 Days.”

전현무, 생방송 펑크 사과 “아나운서 명예 실추시켰다”
전현무 KBS 아나운서가 생방송 라디오 뉴스를 펑크냈다.
28일 KBS에 따르면 전 아나운서는 이날 오전 5시 생방송으로 진행되는 1라디오(97.3㎒) '5시뉴스'에 나타나지 않았다. 이 때문에 오전 5시부터 약 50초간 음악 방송을 내보냈고 이후에는 보도국 기자가 대신 뉴스를 진행했다.
KBS 배재성 홍보실장은 28일 일간스포츠와의 통화에서 "전 아나운서가 전날 늦은 시간까지 촬영에 임해 지친 상태에서 깜빡 잠이 들어 실수했다고 한다. 술을 마셨거나 개인적인 일로 펑크를 낸 것은 아니다"고 말했다.
김성수 아나운서 실장은 "전현무 개인에 대한 비난이 나오는데 이건 전현무 개인의 문제가 아니라 KBS 아나운서 전현무가 일으킨 사고다. KBS 내 200여명의 아나운서가 누구나 예외없이 숙직을 하고 있다. 너무 많은 프로그램을 맡고 피곤에 찌들어있다보면 이런 사고도 낼 수 있다"면서 "생방송을 하다보면 원인을 알 수 없는 기계사고도 자주 발생한다. 사람이 기계보다 더 정확할 수는 없는 일"이라고 설명했다.
이어서 "매달 심의평정위원회가 열린다. 한 달간 프로그램 전반에 대한 평가를 하는 시간이다. 위원회가 열릴 때 오늘 사고에 대한 이야기도 오갈 것으로 보인다. 정상참작을 하게 되든 경고 등의 조치가 따르든 그 때 결정될 것"이라고 덧붙였다. 또한, "전현무 아나운서가 워낙 많은 일정을 소화하다보니 본의 아니게 실수를 했다. 본인이 충분히 반성하고 있는만큼 어느 정도 '인간적인 실수'로 봐줄 필요도 있다"고 전했다.
전현무 아나운서도 21일부터 오늘까지 옥주현 대신 임시 DJ로 활동중인 KBS 2FM '옥주현의 가요광장'에서 "어제 오후 10시 뉴스를 마치고 숙직실에서 잠을 자다가 너무 깊이 잠들어 알람 소리도 못 듣고 뉴스를 펑크냈다. 대다수 아나운서 선·후배들이 어떤 상황에서도 자신의 일을 모두 소화하고 있다. 오늘 난 그렇게 하지 못했다"면서 "시말서나 경위서를 써야 하는 게 아니냐고들 묻는데 이미 썼다. 아나운서의 명예를 실추시킨 것 같아 마음이 무겁다. 반성의 계기로 삼을 것"이라고 사과의 뜻을 전했다.
