SLS’s Lee keeps trying to prove his bribing

As part of his campaign to prove that he provided President Lee Myung-bak’s aides with cash, gift certificates and entertainment for many years, SLS Group Chairman Lee Kuk-chul yesterday showed more evidence to reporters, such as accounts of a credit card that he said he gave to Shin Jae-min, a former vice minister of culture, sports and tourism.

Lee Kuk-chul will also be questioned by prosecutors again today.

Lee held a press conference with reporters yesterday at his office in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul, and said he had given a corporate credit card to Shin and that the then-vice minister used the card 250 times in department stores and hotels for personal purposes from May 2008 to September 2009.

“The card was used mostly in department stores, restaurants, and hotels,” Lee told reporters. “If you visit the places, you will find his signatures there.”

On the accounts, the amounts and dates of transactions were recorded. A total of 100 million won ($84,817) was charged on the card. However, Lee could not produce any receipts with Shin’s signature.

Lee also showed a picture of a sedan that he said he gave to Shin early this year.

Lee said he hired a Daegu-based broker surnamed Lee in 2009 to lobby then-government officials when prosecutors were investigating the SLS Group for accounting fraud.

“In 2009, I heard that officials at the Blue House’s senior secretary for civil affairs were in charge of the investigation,” Lee said. “So I gave about 600 million won to the broker to lobby the officials, but it didn’t work.”

“Park Young-june, former vice minister of knowledge economy, also told the head of SLS Group’s Japanese branch that he ‘will help him in any troubles,’ ” Lee said. “So in 2009, when the Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office was investigating the group, I sent an e-mail to Park to ask for help.”

Lee added that, when Park met with the Japanese branch’s head, he was given expensive entertainment and gifts.

However, prosecutors still remain skeptical of Lee because he has produced so little evidence of his charges.

“All of the evidence that Lee produces doesn’t verify whether high-ranking government officials, including former Vice Minister Shin, received bribes or not,” a prosecutor told the JoongAng Ilbo yesterday.

“Although we can track the accounts charged on a credit card, the full records are only saved for a year, which means the accounts in 2009 could be deleted already.”

신재민(53) 전 문화체육관광부 차관 등 현정부 인사들에게 금품과 향응을 제공했다고 주장한 이국철(49) SLS그룹 회장이 1일 추가 물증을 공개했다.

이 회장은 이날 오후 서울 강남구 신사동 사무실에서 기자들과 만나 신 전 차관이 2008년 8월부터 2009년 11월까지 사용했다는 SLS그룹의 해외 법인카드 전표 내역을 공개했다.

액셀 파일 형식의 A4용지 5장짜리 문서에는 '롯데쇼핑 본점 1천100달러, 신세계 백화점 1천284달러' 식으로 카드 사용 장소와 금액이 날짜별로 정리돼 있으며 총 사용 금액은 1억원 이상으로 나타났다.

하지만 카드 사용자를 알 수 있는 서명은 공개되지 않았다.

이 회장은 "(사용처가) 주로 백화점이고 식당, 호텔도 있다. 거기(사용처)만 확인하면 바로 사인 전표가 나올 수 있을 것"이라며 "전표 내역은 3일 날 검찰에 나갈 때 가져갈 것"이라고 주장했다.

이 회장은 신 전 차관이 2009년 11월까지 법인카드를 매달 700만원 정도씩 1억원 가량 사용했다고 주장하고 있다.

이 회장은 올해 초 신 전 차관에게 지원했다는 SUV 차량의 사진도 이날 함께 공개했다.

이 회장은 지난 10년간 10억원이 넘는 현금, 상품권, 차량 등을 지원했다고 주장했다.

이 회장은 검찰 출석 시 법인카드 전표뿐 아니라 렌터카 비용 내역, 신 전 차관에게 전달했다는 상품권 구매 영수증도 함께 제출할 예정이다.

사건을 수사중인 서울중앙지검 특수3부(심재돈 부장검사)는 이 회장이 검찰에 나오면 제출된 자료를 토대로 신 전 차관이 실제로 거액의 금품을 수수했는지를 포함해 이 회장이 주장한 금전적 지원 내역의 신빙성을 따져볼 방침이다.

또 박영준(51) 전 국무총리실 차장이 총리실 재직 당시 일본 출장을 갔을 때 SLS그룹 현지법인 간부로부터 400만~500만원 상당의 향응 접대를 받았다는 이 회장의 주장도 확인할 방침이다.

이 회장은 SLS그룹 일본 현지법인 간부 권모씨가 당시 일본 현지에서 박 전 차장 일행을 접대하고 나서 박 전 차장과 함께 찍은 사진 등을 제출할 것으로 전해졌다.
