Hyun to promote Korea in Indonesia
“Hyun Bin will visit Indonesia between Oct. 5 and 7,” the ministry said in a press release yesterday. “Hyun will attend an event marking Armed Forces Day on the first day and then visit the Indonesian Marine Corps on his second day,” the press release added.
According to the ministry, the Indonesian government asked the ministry to include Hyun with other Korean military officials due to the high popularity of the drama series “Secret Garden” in Indonesia.
“Secret Garden,” featuring Hyun and actress Ha Ji-won, became a huge hit when it was aired earlier this year.
It was the last drama series Hyun appeared in before he joined the Marines.
Upon the request from the Indonesian government, the ministry debated whether or not to allow it because Hyun serves as an ordinary solider, not as an Army public relations officer.
But the ministry decided to send Hyun to Indonesia because “Hyun will promote the high spirit of Korean soldiers” and it will help the export of Korean military goods to Indonesia in the near future.
However, the ministry has come under fire for using Hyun’s star status too often.
Hyun already participated in a marathon race in September. The race was held to commemorate the recapture of Seoul during the Korean War on Sept. 28, 1950.
The Marine Corps also made a photo book, which captures Hyun’s military life, to promote the Marine Corps.

현빈, 인도네시아 방문…지나친 현빈홍보 논란
해병대 전투병 현빈이 이번엔 인도네시아 방산수출을 위한 국방부 홍보병으로 나선다.
국방부는 “현빈이 10월5일부터 7일까지 인도네시아를 방문해 2박3일간 인도네시아 국군의 날 행사를 관람하고 해병부대를 방문할 예정”이라고 3일 밝혔다.
이번 방문은 인도네시아 정부가 현지에서 드라마 '시크릿 가든'으로 인기를 얻고 있는 현빈의 행사참석을 요청하면서 이뤄졌다. 군 관계자는 “고등훈련기 T-50과 잠수함 등 방산수출과 관련해 인도네시아와의 교류가 필요하며 현빈이 한국군의 이미지를 제고할 수 있을 것이라 판단해 인도네시아 행을 결정했다”고 설명했다.
그러나 현재 일반 전투병으로 복무중인 현빈을 홍보병으로 활용하는 게 맞느냐를 놓고 논란이 뜨겁다.
지난 3월 해병대에 입대한 현빈은 현재 백령도 6여단에 배치돼 일반 보병 전투병으로 복무 중이다. 본인은 입대 당시 "일반 전투병으로 평범하게 근무하기 원한다"고 밝혔지만, 이미 화보집 제작과 홍보병 전환 등을 두고 여러번 논란을 겪었다.
지난달 25일에는 서울수복기념마라톤대회에 참가해 시민들과 만났고, 30일에는 '제22회 해병대 군악대 정기연주회'의 사회자로 나서는 등 전투병과는 전혀 상관없는 일정으로 바쁜 행보를 보이고 있다.
