MLB Recap: Tigers stop Yankees in 9th inning

NEW YORK - Detroit closer Jose Valverde held off a furious New York ninth-inning rally and the Tigers avoided a major slip-up, beating the Yankees 5-3 on a rainy Sunday and leveling their best-of-five AL playoff series at one game apiece.

Down 5-1, the Yankees scored twice in the ninth. Helped when Detroit catcher Alex Avila lost his footing on the slick on-deck circle while chasing a foul pop that would’ve been the final out, New York got a chance to win it.

Robinson Cano, who hit a grand slam and had six RBIs as the Yankees won the opener, came up with two outs and runners on first and second. After wiping away raindrops from his helmet, Cano hit a routine ground ball to end it.

Tigers starter Max Scherzer pitched a no-hit ball into the sixth before Cano hit an opposite-field single to left.

Miguel Cabrera’s two-run homer in the first off Freddy Garcia gave Scherzer an early edge, and the Tigers took a 4-0 lead into the eighth.

Curtis Granderson hit a solo homer off Tigers reliever Joaquin Benoit in the eighth.

At Milwaukee, Jonathan Lucroy drove in the winning run and the Milwaukee Brewers showed they could bunt as well as bash, breaking away from the Arizona Diamondbacks to take a 2-0 lead in their NL division series by beating 9-4.

Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer and fellow slugger Prince Fielder added an RBI single for Milwaukee.

Lucroy’s safety squeeze keyed a five-run sixth inning, and came right after Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler became angry about a balk call.

With the score 4-all and runners at the corners with one out, Jerry Hairston Jr. took a couple of half-steps and sprinted home as Lucroy bunted toward first base. Ziegler’s awkward flip went wide of catcher Miguel Montero and the Diamondbacks imploded from there, with Milwaukee taking a 9-4 lead.

Brewers starter Zack Greinke struggled in his first postseason appearance, giving up three home runs and leaving without a decision.

디트로이트, 양키스와의 원정 경기서 1승 1패

디비전 시리즈에서 '난적' 뉴욕 양키스를 만난 디트로이트가 1승1패, 만족할만한 성적을 거두고 홈으로 가게 됐다. 위기의 디트로이트를 구한 건 4년차 '파이어볼러' 맥스 슈어저(27). 슈어저는 3일(이하 한국시간) 뉴욕 양키스와 원정경기에 선발 등판, 6이닝 2피안타 무실점 호투하며 5-3 승리를 이끌었다.

슈어저는 인내심과 선구안이 좋은 뉴욕 양키스 타자들을 상대로 빼어난 완급조절을 선보이며 6회 말 1사까지 노히트노런 행진을 벌였다. 최고 구속 시속 157㎞에 이르는 빠른 직구와 시속 140㎞대 체인지업으로 5개의 탈삼진을 잡아내며 뛰어난 구위에 비해 제구가 불안하다는 평가를 잠재웠다.

위기도 있었다. 1회말 2사 후 로빈슨 카노와 알렉스 로드리게스에게 연속 볼넷을 내주며 2사 1·2루 위기에 몰렸지만 마크 테세이라를 2루수 플라이로 잡아내며 고비를 넘겼다. 5회말 1사 후에는 호르헤 포사다에게 볼넷, 러셀 마틴에게 몸에 맞는 공을 내주며 1사 1·2루가 됐지만 브렛 가드너를 3루수 직선타, 데릭 지터를 유격수 땅볼로 처리했다.

미주리대학교를 졸업하고 2008년 애리조나에 입단한 슈어저는 데뷔 첫 해 7경기에 나서 승리 없이 4패만 기록했다. 하지만 56이닝 동안 66개의 삼진을 잡아내 강한 인상을 남겼고, 3.05의 준수한 평균자책점을 기록했다. 2009년에는 애리조나의 선발 한 자리를 꿰차고 9승(11패)을 거두며 가능성을 보였다. 2010년 애리조나-뉴욕 양키스-디트로이트의 삼각 트레이드를 통해 디트로이트 유니폼을 입게 된 슈어저는 지난해 12승(11패)을 거뒀고, 올 시즌 15승(9패)을 따내며 저스틴 벌랜더(24승) 릭 포셀로(14승) 덕 피스터(13승)와 함께 막강 선발진을 구축했다. 슈어저의 호투로 한 숨 돌린 디트로이트는 4일 선발로 벌랜더를 예고했고, 뉴욕 양키스는 C.C 사바시아(19승)를 내세워 에이스 맞대결을 펼친다.

밀워키는 애리조나와 홈 2차전에서 9-4로 승리해 2연승으로 챔피언십시리즈 진출을 눈앞에 뒀다. 밀워키는 선발 잭 그레인키가 5이닝 8피안타 4실점하며 무너졌지만 타카시 사이토 등 이어 던진 4명의 투수가 4이닝을 무실점으로 막아냈다. 외야수 라이언 브라운은 1회말 투런 홈런 포함 4타수 3안타 3타점으로 팀 승리를 이끌었다.

세인트루이스는 필라델피아에 5-4 승리를 거두며 전날 역전패를 설욕했다. 1회말 라이언 하워드와 라울 이바네스에 적시타를 맞고 0-3으로 끌려가던 세인트루이스는 4회와 6회 존 제이의 적시타로 동점을 만들었고, 7회초 알버트 푸홀스의 적시타로 역전에 성공했다. 올 시즌 17승 8패 평균자책점 2.40의 특급 투구를 펼쳤던 필라델피아 선발 투수 클리프 리는 6이닝 12피안타 5실점으로 무너졌다.

4일에는 뉴욕 양키스와 디트로이트, 텍사스와 템파베이가 맞붙는다.
