Pigeon founder to be questioned on assault

The founder of Pigeon Corporation, the fabric softener company, will be summoned by police today to answer questions about whether he hired thugs to rough up an executive he had fired.

According to Gangnam District Police in Seoul, Lee Yoon-chai, the the 77-year-old founder and CEO of Pigeon, will be questioned on a suspicion of instigating violence against former executive Lee Eun-wook by hiring three gangsters in September. The police said it secured testimony from the people involved in the assault and it will investigate Lee today.

Lee is suspected of hiring three gangsters in their 30s from the Mudeungsan clan in Gwangju through one of his aides surnamed Kim, an executive of Pigeon. The gangsters allegedly beat up a former Pigeon executive, Lee Eun-wook, 55, when he was going back to his home in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul on Sept 5.

Lee was fired by Pigeon in June and filed a wrongful dismissal suit against it in August.

The police said it had testimony from Kim admitting that Lee ordered him to hire the gangsters and that he paid 300 million won ($254,000) in cash to the gang leader, who is surnamed Kim, 34.

Kim and the three gangsters involved in the assault were arrested by police on Tuesday.

“We’ve secured evidence and it’s time to listen Lee’s story,” a spokesman of Gangnam police said.

The victim of the assault insists it was ordered because of his wrongful dismissal-lawsuit. He said he was fired after he had criticized the founder’s family’s use of company money as their own. Pigeon maintains that Lee was fired because he abused his authority in obtaining a loan.

The Pigeon founder may not show up for questioning, because he was hospitalized in Seoul National University Hospital Thursday for treatment of cerebral arteriosclerosis. The police said it will consider refiling an arrest warrant if Lee doesn’t appear.

Lee’s attorney said that Lee will attend for questioning at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 5.

Pigeon was founded by Lee in 1978 and specializes in household products such as fabric softener.

이윤재 피죤 회장 피의자 신분 소환

경찰 “전 사장 청부폭행 혐의”
조폭에게 3억 전달 정황 포착
“본인 진술 들어봐야” 출국금지

경찰이 섬유유연제 생산업체인 피죤의 창업자 이윤재(77) 회장을 피의자 신분으로 소환 통보했다고 2일 밝혔다. 이 회장이 피죤 김모(50·구속) 이사를 통해 조직폭력배에게 이은욱(55) 전 피죤 사장을 폭행하도록 사주한 정황이 나타난 데 따른 것이다. 경찰은 특히 이 전 사장을 폭행한 혐의로 구속된 광주 폭력조직 ‘무등산파’ 조직원들과 김 이사를 조사하는 과정에서 이 회장이 폭행 대가로 3억원을 건넸다는 단서를 잡고 조사 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

　강남경찰서 관계자는 이날 “이 회장에게 4일 오전 10시 피의자 신분으로 경찰에 출석할 것을 변호인을 통해 통보했다”고 말했다. 경찰은 이 회장에 대해 출국금지 조치도 했다. 경찰 관계자는 이 회장의 연루 여부에 대해 “어느 정도 증거가 있다. 이제 본인 진술을 들어봐야 한다”고 말했다.

　앞서 경찰은 지난달 30일 이 회장에 대한 체포영장을 신청했으나 법원이 “이 회장이 경찰의 출석 요구에 불응할 이유가 없다”며 기각했다. 이 회장은 김 이사가 조폭을 동원한 혐의로 구속된 지난달 29일을 전후해 병원에 입원한 것으로 전해졌다.

　이 전 사장은 지난 2월 피죤 사장에 취임했으나 4개월 만에 이 회장에 의해 해임됐으며, 서울중앙지법에 해고무효 및 손해배상 소송을 낸 상태다. 피죤 측은 “이 전 사장이 공동 대표이사로 영입됐는데도 단독 대표이사로 등기하고 회사 규정을 위반해 무단으로 자금을 차입하도록 해 이 전 사장과 이에 가담한 상무 2명을 해임했다”고 주장하고 있다. 이에 이 전 사장은 이 회장 일가가 개인적으로 사용한 비용을 영수증 없이 처리한 담당 부서를 질책했다가 해고됐다는 입장인 것으로 전해졌다.

　앞서 지난달 5일 밤 이 전 사장은 서울 삼성동 자신의 주상복합아파트로 귀가하던 중 괴한 3명으로부터 주먹과 발로 폭행당했다. 경찰은 최근 이 전 사장을 폭행한 혐의로 무등산파 조직원 김모(34)씨 등 3명을 구속한 데 이어 이들에게 폭행을 지시한 혐의로 김 이사를 구속했다.

　피죤 관계자는 “정확한 진위를 파악 중이다. 현재로선 뭐라고 할 수 있는 말이 없다”고 말했다. 이 회장은 무역회사 등에서 일하다 1978년 피죤을 설립해 섬유유연제 시장을 개척했다. 지난해 매출은 1437억원이었다. 이 전 사장은 유한킴벌리 부사장을 지내다 피죤에 영입됐었다.
