DP’s Sohn to resign over mayoral primary defeat

Assuming responsibility for the main opposition party’s failure to win the liberal primary for this month’s Seoul mayoral by-election, Democratic Party Chairman Sohn Hak-kyu said yesterday he will step down from his post.

Sohn expressed his intention to end his year-long chairmanship at a party leadership meeting after DP Representative Park Young-sun was defeated by Park Won-soon, an independent candidate, in Monday’s primary to name a single liberal candidate. It is unprecedented that the DP failed to field a candidate for Seoul mayor.

“Although Park Won-soon was selected in the primary, it is an undeniable fact that the largest opposition party with 60 years of history failed to field a candidate,” Sohn was quoted as saying by DP spokesman Lee Yong-sup. “It is appropriate before the public and the Democrats that the chairman step down to assume political and moral responsibility.”

Sohn was elected the DP’s chairman at a party convention on Oct. 3, 2010. The DP’s defeat in the primary came on the first anniversary of his election.

Although members of the DP’s Supreme Council tried to dissuade Sohn, he made clear his intention to step down “because that will only make the DP stronger and healthier.”

“The Supreme Council members will discuss Sohn’s decision and listen to DP members’ opinions and conclude the matter at a general assembly of lawmakers,” Lee said.

Although he will step down as chairman, Sohn said he will support the liberal campaign for the Oct. 26 Seoul mayoral race. “I believe that will be a more dignified way to back Park,” Sohn said.

If Sohn’s resignation goes through, Representative Chung Dong-young, who won the second-most votes in the chairmanship election last year, will take the post under the DP’s constitution.

It’s unclear whether Chung will take the job, because a candidate in the next presidential election must give up any party post one year ahead of the election, which will be held on Dec. 18, 2012.

Chung was the DP’s candidate in 2007, when he was defeated by President Lee Myung-bak, and he is expected to run again next year.

While DP leaders have said they will try to persuade Park Won-soon to join their party before he formally registers his candidacy with the National Election Commission by Friday, it remains to be seen if Park will give up his independent status.

Political analysts credited his victory in the primary to liberal voters’ disgust with business-as-usual party politics.

손학규, 사퇴철회 요구에도 '백의종군' 입장

오늘 중 사퇴 기자회견할 듯…임시지도부 구성 싸고 마찰 가능성

민주당 손학규 대표가 5일 최종 사퇴결심을 밝힐 것이라는 관측이 제기된다.

손 대표는 4일 서울시장 후보단일화 경선에서 민주당 박영선 후보가 시민사회 박원순 후보에게 패배한 책임을 지고 사퇴 의사를 밝혔지만 당내에서 사퇴를 강하게 만류해 최종 입장표명을 보류했다.

손 대표는 전날 밤 측근 의원들과 만찬을 함께 한 자리에서도 사퇴 입장을 굽히지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.

손 대표는 "이제는 박원순 후보를 도와 시장을 만들어야 할 상황"이라며 "그러나 그동안 내가 동원경선을 진두지휘까지 했는데 당 대표 자격으로 박 후보를 돕는 것은 민주당의 자존심이 허락하지 않는다"며 '백의종군' 입장을 피력했다고 한다.

이 자리에 참석한 한 의원은 "손 대표는 사퇴 생각에서 변함이 없을 것같다"며 "민주당의 자존심을 살리면서 박 후보도 당선시키기 위한 길은 이 방법밖에 없다는 생각이 확고해 보였다"고 전했다.

손 대표는 이날 중 기자회견을 열어 사퇴를 공식화할 것이라는 전망이 나온다.

다만 민주당은 오전 의원총회를 열어 손 대표가 사퇴를 철회해줄 것을 호소해 막판 반전의 여지도 있지만 가능성이 높지 않다는 의견이 우세하다. 손 대표는 시내 모처에 머물며 의총에도 불참했다.

의총에서는 손 대표의 충정은 이해되지만 사퇴시 후보단일화 결과에 불복하는 것처럼 비칠 수 있고 서울시장 보궐선거에도 도움이 되지 않는 만큼 손 대표가 입장을 바꿔야 한다는 의견이 절대적이었다.

손 대표가 사퇴하면 임시지도부로 비상대책위원회를 구성한 뒤 12월로 예상되는 전당대회를 앞당겨 실시하는 쪽으로 가지 않겠느냐는 관측이 강하다.

현행 당헌ㆍ당규상 지난해 10ㆍ3 전당대회 차점자인 정동영 최고위원이 대표직을 승계하도록 돼 있지만 천정배 최고위원이 서울시장 경선 과정에서 최고위원직에서 물러나고 이인영 김영춘 최고위원도 동반사퇴 입장을 밝혔기 때문이다.

그러나 박주선 조배숙 최고위원 등 당내 비주류 측에서는 지도부 총사퇴시 당이 최악의 위기 상황으로 내몰릴 수 있어 정 최고위원 승계가 필요하다는 입장이어서 임시지도부 구성을 놓고도 마찰이 빚어질 가능성이 있다.
