What Steve Jobs gave us all

The high-tech giant of our age has died. Now, only his legend will remain in the hearts and minds of millions of his consumers. Yesterday Apple said, “We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.”

No one can possibly deny his achievements, and they were well described by the company’s official statement, which read: “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives.” Jobs did an amazing job in his short 56 years of life. The world is infinitely better because of him and we are indebted to him beyond description.

Jobs left a legacy. He invented the first personal computers, the Apple I and II, with his friend in the 1970s and opened many a new frontier with the iPod, iPhone and iPad after returning to Apple two decades later. It is not untrue to say that he blazed the path, Bill Gates paved it, and countless copycats followed in the journey of IT development, and he was never anywhere but way out in front.

The intangible assets he has left are also immense. Taking the lead in the frontier of innovation with a symbolic annual salary of one dollar, Jobs was the most excellent CEO in the world. He has so energetically pursued creation and destruction - as vividly embodied in his motto, “Stay hungry, stay foolish” - that he never ceased to enthrall consumers as he created a unique ecosystem of fascinating technologies beyond anyone’s imagination.

Everyone dreams, but he turned dreams into reality with his powerful leadership. Thanks to that, Apple grew tall in the global IT habitat. Even when emaciated by illness, he showed what a CEO must do at times of crisis and opportunity.

Historians will likely divide IT history into pre-Jobs and post-Jobs eras. Now, the industry, including Korea’s share, will start a cutthroat battle to fill the humongous vacuum he has left in his wake. When alive, Jobs said: “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me ... Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful ... that’s what matters to me.” Future winners in the IT war will surely be those individuals who believe in creativity and innovation, as Jobs did.

In retrospect, we were all fortunate to have been in the same world as Jobs. Thanks to him, we can move toward a better future with more courage and inspiration. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of a giant of our age. Requiescat in pace.

한 시대를 같이해 우리는 행복했다
그의 도전·창조정신 오래 기억해야

한 시대의 거인이 갔다. 이제 그의 전설은 신화로 남게 됐다. 미국 애플은 어제 성명서를 내고 “애통한 마음으로 스티브 잡스가 사망했음을 알린다”고 발표했다. “그의 영명함과 열정, 에너지는 우리의 삶을 윤택하게 해준 끝없는 혁신의 원천이었으며 그 덕분에 세상은 헤아릴 수 없을 정도로 진보했다”는 성명서에 고개를 끄덕이지 않을 사람은 거의 없다. 잡스는 56년간의 짧은 생애 동안 엄청난 일들을 해냈다. 그로 인해 세상은 보다 편리해졌고, 인류의 삶은 한층 풍성해졌다. 우리는 그에게 너무나 많은 빚을 졌다. Thank you Jobs!

잡스가 우리에게 남긴 선물은 헤아릴 수 없이 많다. 1976년 그는 세계 최초의 개인용컴퓨터인 애플Ⅰ과 애플Ⅱ를 공동개발했다. 이어 1996년 애플에 귀환한 뒤에는 아이팟-아이폰-아이패드 시리즈로 신세계를 열었다. 세계 정보기술(IT)의 발자취를 더듬어 보면 “잡스가 처음 길을 열고, 빌 게이츠가 그 길을 단단히 다졌으며, 그 길 위로 수많은 모방자들이 뒤따랐다”는 표현이 전혀 빈말이 아님을 알 수 있다. 그가 이끈 애플의 로고인 ‘한입 베어먹은 사과’는 성경에 등장하는 이브의 사과, 만유인력을 발견한 뉴턴의 사과에 이어 인류 역사상 가장 중요한 사과의 반열에까지 올랐다.

잡스가 남긴 무형의 유산도 엄청나다. 단 1달러의 연봉을 받으면서 그는 혁신을 주도한 이 시대 최고의 CEO였다. ‘계속 갈망하라 여전히 우직하게(Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish)’라는 좌우명대로 창조와 파괴를 한 순간도 멈추지 않았다. 그는 소비자들이 원하는 수준을 뛰어넘어 소비자를 끊임없이 사로잡는 매력적인 신기술과 새로운 생태계를 선보였다. 누구나 꿈을 꾸지만, 잡스는 그 꿈을 현실로 바꾼 인물이다. 그의 리더십에 열광하는 충성스런 소비자들 덕분에 애플은 쑥쑥 커갔다. 오랜 병마로 그의 몸이 야위고 수척해졌지만 애플은 세계 최고의 자리에 올랐다. 그렇게 세상 모두가 박수치는 그 절정의 순간에 그는 조용히 물러나 숨을 거두었다.

아마 미래의 사가(史家)들은 세계 IT 역사를 ‘잡스 생전(生前)’과 ‘잡스 사후(死後)’의 시대로 구분할 것이다. 이제 그가 떠난 빈 공간을 메우기 위해 한국을 비롯한 세계 IT업계의 새로운 각축전이 시작될 게 분명하다. 그는 생전에 “나는 무덤에서 이 나라 최고 부자가 되는 일 따위는 하고 싶지 않다. 매일 밤 잠자리에 들 때마다 우리는 정말 놀랄만한 일을 했다고 말하는 것, 그것이 나에게 중요하다”고 즐겨 말했다. 우리 모두 되새겨볼 대목이다. 돌아보면 우리는 그와 한 시대를 같이 할 수 있어 행복했다. 잡스 덕분에 우리는 좀 더 용기를 갖고 새로운 꿈을 향해 길을 떠날 수 있게 됐다. 그의 불굴의 도전정신과 창조성은 우리가 오래오래 기억해야 할 것이다. 다행히 유족들은 “잡스가 가족들이 지켜보는 가운데 조용히 세상을 떠났다”고 전했다. 이제 역사의 뒤안길로 사라지는 거인에게 마지막 애도를 표한다. 굿바이 잡스!
