Soldiers tap their inner fashionista

By day, they serve and protect our country. By night, they primp.

The football matches and hiking that once were the preferred ways to spend free time for the country’s young conscripted men are increasingly giving way to more aesthetic hobbies: personal grooming and fashion.

At a recent two-hour lecture at Korea Air Force Academy in Cheongwon, South Chungcheong, 120 cadets enthusiastically picked out outfits, donning them in front of the class to receive styling tips from a fashion coordinator.

“It is our first time having a class on fashion,” an Air Force Academy official said. “We reflected our young soldiers’ interest in fashion with the class, and I think they really enjoy it. It’s kind of a surprise that they are so interested in fashion because they wear uniforms during the week.”

The official said that the academy would consider making the fashion class a regular course starting next year because it was so popular.

The rite of passage that is the Korean military - far from home and from civilization - is no longer immune to changes in society, helped along by easy Internet access and changing norms of masculinity and grooming habits.

Beauty may not be skin deep, but those who serve in uniform are spending more time on skin care anyway - the image of battle-hardened soldiers with rough, bronzed skin be damned.

Many soldiers have begun supplying their own camouflage paint, instead of using standard-issue military ones, so their skin can stay supple and protected while they blend in with the outdoors.

Cosmetics company Innisfree has sold over 76,000 units of Extreme Power Camouflage Cream since the product’s introduction last December, according to the company. An Innisfree official said their cream protected soldiers’ skin from the sun and supplied more moisture.

Sunscreen, hand creams, foam cleansers and moisturizing lotion were also popular among soldiers, Innisfree said.

“The military provides soap every month to soldiers, but it isn’t our first choice,” said a 22-year-old corporal surnamed Seong. “There are 12 soldiers in my barracks, and 10 of them use at least two types of skin care products in addition to foam cleansers instead of military supplies.”

He added, “When we finish our military training in the summer, we use facial masks and whitening cosmetics.”

Some online businesses are changing their inventory to meet soldiers’ cosmetic needs.

Gomsin.com, a popular shopping site for soldiers, didn’t carry cosmetic products when it launched in 2001. Their most popular products used to be cold-weather gear, including hand warmers, facial masks and gloves, but cosmetics now make up more than 30 percent of its sales. The most popular products are foot creams and foot exfoliators that remove calluses on heels.

Professor Kim Hye-kyun, from Woo Song University’s beauty and design department, attributes the growing trend to younger generations who are already well-acquainted with modern Korea’s high-maintenance grooming habits before they are conscripted.

And those who didn’t know much about fashion and style, she said, are getting a chance to learn from their friends as they live together.

“I think they care more about skin care and styling before they join the military,” Kim said. “They certainly don’t want to fall behind trends even if they live in rural military areas.”
