Thinking of getting a new laptop with an affordable price tag and portable body?

Amid all the buzz about tablet computers and of course, the less-popular but always-available netbooks, Google Chromebook has emerged as a new option for consumers.

Chromebook laptops are designed to run on Google Inc.’s Web-based Chrome operating system, which Google first introduced to the market in 2008.

What does Web-based mean? It lets users run programs, edit documents or save files by accessing the Web applications, which is similar to how smartphones operate.

So one can say that Chromebooks are PCs “of the Web, by the Web and for the Web,” so to speak. And just as its identity is clear, its strengths and weaknesses are also conspicuous.

Korea’s Samsung Electronics, along with Taiwan-based Acer, are the only two computer manufacturers that make and sell Google Chromebooks, which analysts say may replace low-end netbooks down the road.

It’s been a month since Samsung released the Chromebooks in Korea, and the JoongAng Ilbo has used the device to find out its pros and cons. Here is a list of things that you can do with the Chromebook and things that you can’t.

Strengths: Fast start-up, emails

Chromebooks are perhaps the best device for basic tasks like checking your email or Web surfing as soon as you boot up.

For starters, the first screen you get is the Web at a booting speed of less than 10 seconds. Considering that the booting speed for most laptops is somewhere around 45 seconds, that is about one-fifth of the time.

If you close the laptop it automatically switches to standby mode, and when you open it up, it takes you back to where you left it in just a second or two.

Fast booting is one of the Chromebook’s features highly-touted by both Google and Samsung. As the laptop minimizes the use of its hard drive, it boots at a faster speed than other laptops, they say.

Chromebook laptops are in a way “empty-tin PCs” because everything is in the remote data centers - software as well as all the files you make.

You don’t have to install programs. You can use Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint as free applications from the Chrome Web Store. And your files are saved on your Google account, so you can access them using other Chromebooks as well.

Being an empty-tin, network-based PC, it uses less power, makes little sound and doesn’t heat up much. At just 1.48 kilograms in weight and 19.9 millimeters in thickness plus a battery life of eight hours or more, it’s easy to carry around.

Weaknesses: HWP, online shopping

But being Web-based is also exactly where the weaknesses come from.

You simply cannot use programs that are not offered at the Chrome Web Store on Chromebook laptops - like for instance, the Hangul Word Processor (HWP).

All the statements released by Korean government ministries, agencies and public corporations use HWP. So that could be a downside for many people here in Korea.

Also, “spending money” is very much limited on Chromebooks.

Most Korean online shopping Web sites or financial institutions require the Internet Explorer plug-in ActiveX.

Designed by Microsoft for the IE browser, ActiveX downloads applications needed for online tasks like banking and shopping, as well as viewing and downloading certain content.

You can, however, shop on foreign shopping sites such as Amazon or eBay.

“Are folks ready for a cloud computer largely crippled when there’s a shaky online connection or none at all? My suspicion is that it will be a tough sell, especially for nontechies,” a USA Today review wrote.

CNET review notes how Google has been working on beefing up the offline capabilities of the Chromebook laptops. Google now offers limited offline Gmail and Docs access.

“So, in the end, even with its new offline abilities, a Chromebook is still incredibly crippled without a Web connection. Until Google can offer up full, seamless offline productivity apps, they aren’t worth the trouble,” it writes.

출시 한 달 삼성 ‘크롬북’ 써보니

구글의 클라우드 기반 운영체제(OS) ‘크롬’을 탑재한 삼성전자의 ‘크롬북’이 국내 출시 한 달을 맞았다. 구글은 2008년 웹브라우저 ‘크롬’을 내놓은 뒤 이를 바탕으로 모든 작업이 웹에서 이뤄지는 크롬OS를 설계했다. 크롬북은 ‘웹의, 웹에 의한, 웹을 위한 PC’라는 뚜렷한 정체성을 지녔다. 그에 따른 강점과 약점도 명확하다.

크롬북은 e-메일 확인이나 웹 검색과 같은 간단한 작업을 부팅 즉시 하기에 최적의 기기다. 첫 화면이 웹으로 시작하기 때문이다. 일단 부팅 속도가 빠르다. 8초면 부팅이 완료돼 일반 노트북(45초 내외)의 5~6분의 1 수준이다. 사용하다가 화면을 덮으면 곧바로 대기모드로, 화면을 열면 다시 사용 상태로 1~2초 내에 전환된다. 중앙처리장치(CPU)로는 사양이 높지 않은 아톰 프로세서를 탑재했지만, 보조 기억장치로 하드디스크드라이브(HDD) 대신 플래시메모리로 구성된 솔리드스테이드드라이브(SSD)를 사용하기 때문에 속도가 빠르다. 급하게 컴퓨터를 써야 하는데 소프트웨어나 프로그램 업데이트 공지 때문에 부팅이 지연될 염려도 없다. 크롬OS의 주기적 업데이트가 자동으로 이뤄지기 때문이다.

　크롬북은 클라우드 기반으로 작동하는 일종의 ‘깡통PC’다. 프로그램을 컴퓨터에 설치하지 않고 네트워크를 통해 사용한다. 문서 작성도 마찬가지다. 구글의 인터넷상 문서 서비스인 구글 닥스(Docs)를 이용하게 돼 있다. 크롬용 애플리케이션(응용프로그램, 이하 앱) 장터인 크롬 웹스토어에 올라온 마이크로소프트(MS) 워드·엑셀·파워포인트의 무료 앱을 사용할 수도 있다. 작성된 문서는 사용자의 구글 계정에 저장되며 다른 크롬북에서도 이 계정으로 접속하면 동일한 사용자환경(UI)으로 작업을 이어갈 수 있다. 구글닥스·구글 캘린더·G메일은 인터넷이 연결되지 않은 상태에서도 사용할 수 있는 베타 버전이 출시된 상태다.

　네트워크 전용 PC의 특성상 사양이 높을 필요가 없어 저전력으로 설계됐고, 소음과 발열이 적다. 무게 1.48㎏, 두께 19.9㎜의 경량이고 배터리 사용시간(8시간 이상)이 길어 이동량이 많은 이에게 적합하다. 스마트폰 이용자는 테더링(휴대전화를 모뎀으로 무선 인터넷을 연결하는 기능)을 사용해 활용도를 높일 수 있다. 단, 블루투스를 지원하지 않으며 유선 랜 연결 포트는 없다.

　모든 것을 웹 안에서 처리한다는 것은 단점도 된다. 크롬 웹스토어에 올라오지 않은 프로그램은 사용이 불가능하다. 한글과컴퓨터의 HWP 파일이 대표적인 예로, 작성뿐 아니라 읽기도 안 된다. 정부와 국내 공공기관에서 주로 사용하는 HWP 문서를 읽을 수 없다는 것은 크롬북의 업무 활용도를 크게 떨어뜨린다.

　‘돈 쓰는 일’ 역시 국내 사이트에서는 대부분 불가능하다. 인터넷 쇼핑·뱅킹과 같은 국내 금융 결제가 대부분 윈도OS에 인터넷 익스플로러(IE), 액티브X가 아니면 접속이 제한되기 때문이다. 아마존이나 이베이와 같은 외국 사이트에서의 쇼핑은 가능하다.

　결국 크롬북의 성패는 인터넷 개방성과 크롬 웹스토어의 발전에 달려 있는 셈이다. 개선 가능성은 있다. 우리은행·국민은행·IBK기업은행·하나은행이 파이어폭스·사파리·크롬과 같은 비(非)MS 브라우저 환경에서도 사용 가능한 ‘오픈뱅킹’을 열었다.

　크롬 브라우저의 빠른 성장 또한 크롬북엔 청신호다. 브라우저 확장이 웹스토어 활성화로 이어질 가능성이 크기 때문이다. 시장조사업체인 스탯카운터에 따르면 지난달 말 기준 크롬의 전 세계 브라우저 점유율은 23.6%로, 2위 파이어폭스(26.8%)에 근접한 3위를 기록했다. 1위는 41.7%의 IE이다. 스탯카운터는 올 연말 크롬이 2위를 차지할 것으로 내다봤다.
