Singer Kim Gun-mo is back in the limelight to celebrate his 20 years in music.
Late last month, Kim released both a limited-edition “best of” album and the 13th album of his career. The limited-edition album traces Kim’s musical history with songs that flavored the era at the time.
“Looking back at my singing career, Charlie Chaplin’s quote comes to mind: ‘Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot,’” Kim said in a recent interview with Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s sports daily. “There have been ups and downs, but it has all passed without a hitch.
“The dispute regarding ‘Survival: I Am a Singer’ was the greatest crisis of my 20-year career, but it was definitely also a turning point.”
Back in March, Kim dropped out of MBC’s reality show “Survival: I Am a Singer,” igniting a national debate about the fairness of the judging process.
The show pits seven famous singers against one another. Each week, the singers perform their own songs for a studio audience of 500 that casts votes to determine a winner.
The show was three weeks into its first season when Kim was voted off. When the producer gave him the option to stay or go, Kim chose to stay, and that caused both an audience revolt and criticism from his fellow competitors. In the end, Kim dropped out.
Kim sat down for an interview with Ilgan Sports to talk about his new albums and his 20-year career in music.
Q. How do you feel on your 20th anniversary?
A. I feel like 20 years have passed in the blink of an eye. But I feel like I finally know what music is. In retrospect, I’ve had a smooth ride. There were ups and downs, but nothing especially difficult.
Do you have any regrets about the past 20 years?
I think I’ve gotten through it with diligence. While preparing the best-of album, I looked through all of my music and realized that I had been idle many times, but I’ve also worked very hard on many albums. I hope this is how the public sees me.
What has been the most memorable moment of your career?
It was probably when I released the song “Excuse.” Though African-American music was uncommon in Korea at the time, the album sold around 1.8 million copies. Today, it is still a dazzling memory.
The music industry has changed a lot. How do you feel about music today?
Music has become more diverse and the industry is like a department store now. But within that, there is always a place for me. The size of the store may have been reduced, but my music will be sold at a higher price than that of the others.
What was it like to release an album after the “I Am a Singer” debacle?
I emptied my mind after leaving the show and then I made an album. The show was a turning point in my career. What I felt and thought after the incident will always follow me. People will remember the scandal even after listening to this album. I have no intention of avoiding it and it is why I included “You Are My Lady,” which I sang during the show, on the new album.
What changes have you experienced since then?
I returned to music. Making this album was like going back 20 years and I’ve started thinking about how I will spend the next 20 years. Frankly, the “I Am a Singer” controversy was the most shocking event I’ve ever experienced and was a turning point. It even made me reflect on my life. There have been many ups and downs, but this incident was the most difficult to deal with. It has changed who I am. I even stopped drinking, which I used to love to do, and focused on the new album.

김건모 “‘나가수’ 이후, 다시 음악 자체로 돌아갔다”
민가수' 김건모가 가수 데뷔 20주년을 맞아 화려하게 돌아왔다.
특별한 해에 발표하는 앨범답게 한정판 베스트 앨범과 정규 13집을 동시에 준비했다. 베스트 앨범에는 김건모의 역사를 모두 담았다. 1992년 1집 '첫인상'부터 280만장을 팔아 한국 기네스 북에 오른 3집 '잘못된 만남'까지 시대를 풍미한 명곡이 모두 들을 수 있다. 정규 13집도 지난 3월 방송가의 가장 큰 화두였던 MBC '나는 가수다' 출연 이후 발표하는 첫 앨범이라 관심이 집중되고 있다. 김건모는 "내 가수 활동을 돌아보면 '인생은 멀리서 보면 희극, 가까이서 보면 비극'이라는 찰리 채플린의 말이 떠오른다. 사건·사고는 많았지만 별탈없이 열심히 활동했다. '나가수' 논란도 데뷔 20년 만에 겪은 최대 위기였지만, 가수 활동의 터닝포인트이기도 했다"고 전했다.
-데뷔 20주년을 맞았다.
"눈을 한 두 번 깜빡 했더니 벌써 20년이 지나간 느낌이다. 강산이 두 번이나 변하는 시간이 지났는데 이제서야 음악을 조금 알 것 같다. 내 음악을 돌아보면 그런대로 평탄했다는 생각이다. 자잘한 굴곡은 있었지만 크게 힘들 것도 없었다."
-아쉬운 점은 없나.
"참 열심히 산 것 같다. 이번 베스트 앨범을 준비하면서 모든 앨범을 쭉 들어봤다. '내가 놀긴 많이 놀았지만 음반 작업은 진짜 열심히 했구나'라는 생각이 들더라. 대중들도 그 점만은 기억해줬으면 좋겠다."
-언제까지 음악을 할 수 있을까.
"이제 45살이다. 앞으로 20년은 거뜬하다. 얼마 전 영화 '레이 찰스'를 보고 큰 감명을 받았다. 마지막 자막이 '이 이후로 레이 찰스는 25년간 미 전국에서 공연하며 대중의 심금을 울렸다'인데, 그걸 보고 '나도 이제부터라도 정신 차리고 음악하면 되겠구나'라는 생각을 했다. 하하."
-‘국민 가수’로 산다는 것은 어떤 기분인가.
"사실 난 '국민가수'라는 말이 굉장히 부담스럽다. '국민'이라는 단어는 훈장 같은 것이다. 그런 단어가 붙은 사람은 모두 부담스러워할 거다. 함부로 쓰면 안 될 말이다. 별 이점도 없다. '국민가수'라 부를 정도면 공항 출입할 때 세관이나 검색이라도 빼주던가. 하하. '국민가수'가 폭탄 들고 있을 리는 없지않나. 하하."
-가장 기억에 남는 순간은.
"아무래도 '핑계'를 발표했을 때다. 당시 생소한 흑인 음악으로 180만 장 정도를 판 것 같다. 지금 생각해도 아찔한 기억이다. 엄청 잘 나가기도 했다. 바쁠 때는 헬기를 타고 스케줄을 다녔을 정도였다. 하하."
-가요계도 많이 변했다.
"음악의 폭이 넓어졌다. 예전에 비하면 화려한 백화점이 됐다는 생각이다. 하지만 그 백화점 안에도 '김건모'라는 가게가 존재한다. 매장 크기야 전보다 작아졌겠지만 내 음악이 다른 음악보다 비싸게 팔릴 것이다."
-이번 앨범은 어떻게 준비했나.
"총 제작기간이 6개월 걸렸다. 원래 여름에 나와야 하는 앨범인데 욕심이 생겨서 계획보다 몇 달 더 걸렸다. '자서전'의 경우에는 가사를 4번이나 바꿨을 정도다. 레게·펑크·발라드·블루스·힙합 등 내가 소화할 수 있는 모든 장르를 시도해봤다."
-'나가수' 이후 첫 앨범이라 부담스러웠겠다.
"하차 이후 모든 것을 털어내고 만든 앨범이라, 고민은 없었다. '나가수'는 내 음악 인생의 터닝 포인트가 됐다. 녹음을 끝내놓고 완성된 것을 들어보니 '나가수' 때 생각이 또 나더라. 그 사건을 겪으면서 생각하고 느꼈던 것들을 앞으로도 잊어버리지 않기 위해 노력하겠다. 아직 대중이 '나가수'에 출연한 김건모를 기억하고 있는 것을 잘 안다. 분명 이번 앨범 수록곡을 들으면서도 '나가수'를 떠올릴 것이다. 하지만 굳이 피할 생각은 없다. '나가수'에서 부른 정엽의 '유 아 마이 레이디'를 13집에 수록한 것도 그 이유다."
-'나가수' 이후 어떤 변화가 있었나.
"다시 음악 자체로 돌아갈 수 있게 됐다. 새 앨범을 준비하며 지난 20년을 훌훌 털어버리고 다시 돌아가는 느낌이었다. 앞으로의 20년을 또 어떻게 준비해야 하나 고민도 하게 됐다. 이번 앨범 작업을 하면서는 금주하기도 했다."
-그 사건을 다시 돌아본다면.
"'나는 가수다'는 가수 생활 20년 동안 가장 충격적인 사건이자 터닝 포인트였다. 내 인생까지 되돌아봤다. 20년 동안 무대에 서면서 많은 사건 사고를 겪었지만 '나가수 사건'만큼 힘든 적은 없었다. 그 사건 이후 사람이 변했다. 5~6등을 했다면 변하는 것은 아무 것도 없었을 것이다. 한동안 좋아하던 술도 끊고 작업에만 몰두했다."
-장가는 언제쯤 갈 생각인가.
"결혼을 하지 않았기 때문에 20년 동안 음악을 할 수 있었다고 생각한다. 좋은 사람이 나타나면 하겠지만 아직은 생각이 없다."
