Vettel could have historic racing career, Lauda says

SUZUKA, Japan - Double Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel could ultimately be even more successful than Michael Schumacher, according to triple title winner Niki Lauda.

Red Bull’s 24-year-old German quipped after winning his second title in Japan on Sunday that, even if he was now the sport’s youngest double champion, his great compatriot Schumacher was the youngest to win seven crowns.

Schumacher, now 42, briefly led Sunday’s race for Mercedes and has a record 91 wins under his belt in a career that started in 1991.

No other driver has won more than five championships and only eight have taken more than two since 1950 but Vettel appears certain to join their number before long.

“It is the best performance so far in Formula One, at his age to win two [titles],” Lauda told Reuters at Suzuka.

“To win the first one is always the most difficult because all your career, starting from go-karts all the way up, is years and years of work for this particular day. The second one is easier in a way because there is less pressure.”

Asked whether he could win many more, the man who won championships with Ferrari in 1975 and 1977 and McLaren in 1984 nodded in agreement.

“He has all the circumstances to do it. If the car and his career and where he drives continue in the right direction, then yes. If you choose the wrong car or the car you are driving doesn’t work, then you can’t win because it’s always the combination of the two,” the 62-year-old added.

“But he certainly theoretically can win more than Schumacher if he sits at the right time in the right car because he himself is certainly capable of it.”

Schumacher, who retired in 2006 and then started his comeback last year, won five titles in a row with Ferrari during the Italian team’s most dominant era from 2000 to 2004.

In Lauda’s day, death was an ever present danger in Formula One and a driver could expect to attend numerous funerals of colleagues.

Lauda himself almost died in a fiery crash at the Nurburgring in Germany in 1976 and went on to lose the title by a single point to Britain’s James Hunt after refusing to race in atrocious conditions at a rain-lashed Japanese Grand Prix.

The last driver fatality in Formula One was Brazilian triple champion Ayrton Senna in 1994 but Lauda doubted Vettel would be halted by either the fear factor or any loss of enthusiasm. Instead, he expected him to have a long and brilliant career ahead.

“He is this kind of person - every lap he is doing and every race he is doing; he wants to get quicker and quicker,” Lauda said. “I came to a point where I really decided I wanted to find something else for my life. But in his particular case, with his age and what is all in front of him, there is no way he will be demotivated. He drives himself.”

"2011 코리아 그랑프리에선 어떤 드라이버가 우승할까?"

F1(포뮬러 원) 코리아 그랑프리가 오는 14일부터 16일까지 전남 영암 코리아 인터내셔널 서킷(KIC)에서 열린다.

지난 주말 일본 F1에 이어 올 시즌 16번째로 열리는 코리아 F1은 대회 첫날인 14일 연습주행 2회, 15일 연습 주행과 예선이 진행되며, 마지막 날인 16일 오후 3시에 대망의 결선이 진행된다.

지난해 국내서 열린 첫 대회에선 결승전 당일 비가 오는 악천후 속에서도 8만여 명이 경기를 관전했으며, 페라리의 페르난도 알론소가 극적인 역전승으로 멋진 승부를 연출한 바 있다.

◇ 코리아 그랑프리(10.14~16)에서 주목할 만한 선수는…

올해는 세바스챤 페텔(독일,레드불)이 2연속 F1(포뮬러원) `월드 챔피언`을 확정지은 상태다. 페텔은 9일 일본 스즈카 서킷에서 열린 2011 F1 15라운드 일본 그랑프리 경기에서 3위를 차지했지만, 드라이버 포인트 15점을 추가해 지난해에 이어 2년 연속 종합 1위를 확정했다.

페텔은 지난해 국내대회에선 46랩을 돌던 도중 엔진이 과열돼 머신을 멈출 수밖에 없었다.

페델은 올 시즌 14개 그랑프리에서 9번 우승했다. 미하엘 슈마허의 한 시즌 최다승인 13승 기록을 갈아치울 가능성도 제기됐지만, 최근 일본경기에서 우승을 놓쳐 코리아 그랑프리부터는 모두 우승해야 최소한 타이기록을 세울 수 있다.

승승장구하고 있는 베텔을 위협하고 있는 드라이버는 젠슨 버튼이다. 부드러운 드라이빙 스타일로 유명한 버튼은 올 시즌 헝가리와 캐나다, 일본그랑프리를 우승하면서 종합우승 순위에서 210점으로 2위를 차지하고 있다.

3위는 스페인 출신답게 정열의 드라이버로 불리는 페르난도 알론소다. 그는 2003년에 르노 소속으로 최연소 우승기록을 세웠으며, 2005년에 시즌 7승을 기록하며 F1 챔피언에 오른바있다. 올해는 영국 그랑프리 한 대회만 우승하면서 종합우승 순위 3위를 유지하고 있다.

이외에도 호주 출신의 마크웨버와 함께 맥라렌 소속의 루이스 해밀튼이 종합 4~5위를 각각 달리고 있다. 특히 해밀튼은 지난 시즌 코리아 그랑프리에서 2위를 차지한 바 있다.

F1 코리아 관계자는 "레드불 팀의 베텔과 웨버는 작년 국내대회에서 1위와 2위를 달리다가 리타이어를 해 설욕전을 펼칠 것으로 예상되는 가운데, 페라리의 알론소는 2연속 대회우승을 노리고 있다"며 "맥라렌 듀오인 젠슨 버튼과 해밀튼은 남은 대회만큼은 모두 우승할 수 있도록 노력하겠다는 포부를 밝힌 이상 이번 한국대회가 매우 흥미진진한 레이스가 펼쳐질 것으로 예상된다"고 전했다.

◇ F1 코리아 "지난해보다 숙박 및 편의시설 개선"

F1대회조직위원회 측은 "작년엔 관광호텔 같은 고급숙박시설이 부족했고 서비스가 다소 떨어져 외국인 및 내국인들에게 혼란을 가중시켰지만 올해는 180도 달라진 서비스와 편의시설로 작년과는 다른 편의를 제공할 것"이라고 밝혔다.

F1조직위 측은 결승전날 최대 숙박인원을 7만명 정도로 예측하고 소요객실 3만5000실이 필요, 2시간 이내의 거리에 4만2000실을 확보하고 3,4성급이상 고급숙박시설은 4300실 정도를 확보했다.

이는 지난해에 비해 700여실을 새로이 신축한 결과이며 특히 영암에 새로 문을 연 한옥호텔 ‘영산재’는 지난 9월 말부터 문의가 쇄도하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

선택폭도 다소 넓어졌다. 올해는 관광호텔 및 가족호텔 등 고급형 숙박시설 59개소, F1호텔 147개소, 일반모텔 1879개소를 비롯, 템플스테이, 홈스테이, 관광펜션, 캠핑촌, 한옥민박 등 5000여명이 숙박할 수 있도록 준비했다.

지난해 관광객들로부터 가장 좋지 않은 평가를 받았던 서비스부분도 개선됐다. F1조직위는 경주장 인근 25실 이상의 모텔을 F1호텔로 지정, 의사소통이 가능한 운영요원 배치, 통역, 교통·카랜트 안내 등 24시간 서비스 제공하기로 했다.

◇ 15일 전야제 "소녀시대 등 아이돌 총출동"

F1 조직위는 `소녀시대`, `수퍼주니어`, `티아라`, `레인보우`, `다비치`, `FT아일랜드` 등이 총출동하는 F1 코리아 그랑프리 전야제 콘서트를 계획하고 있다.

이번 콘서트는 15일 오후 영암 F1경주장 상설 패독 특설무대에서 열리며 F1대회 예선전 후 무료입장이기 때문에 일반 관람객들의 입장도 허용된다.

F1 티켓을 구입하면 전라남도, 광주지역 여행지를 할인 또는 무료로 관람할 수 있다. F1 티켓이 있으면 목포 국립해양유물전시관, 무안 생태갯벌공원, 영암 도기문화센터 등 전라남도의 유명관광지 대부분이 무료입장되며 광주 디자인비엔날레와 광주시립미술관을 50% 할인 가격에 볼 수 있다.

아울러 전남도내 27개 골프장은 10월 한 달 동안 F1티켓 소지자에게 그린피와 골프텔 이용료 등을 20% 할인(주말 및 F1대회기간은 제외) 해 준다.
