Park hits the stump for GNP’s Na

For the first time in four years, Representative Park Geun-hye, former chairwoman of the Grand National Party, appeared yesterday at a campaign event supporting former Representative Na Kyung-won, the party’s candidate in the Oct. 26 Seoul mayoral by-election.

Park, the party’s frontrunner for the presidential election next year, hasn’t done any campaigning since 2007 when she supported then-GNP presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak.

When the former mayor Oh Se-hoon of the GNP called a referendum on the free lunch program for Seoul students, Park gave no support and Oh ended up stepping down from his post after an insufficient number of voters participated.

This week, Park is publicly backing Na in her uphill contest against liberal independent Park Won-soon.

Yesterday, Park Geun-hye accompanied Na to an employment office in Guro District, western Seoul, and met with job counselors and people seeking employment. When Park introduced Na, she called her “our” candidate.

“I think job creation is an important matter to relieve people’s worries,” Park told reporters. “And we [Na and I] have common ideas on the nation’s job situation.”

Asked what strengths Na has as a potential mayor, Park said, “As you have seen, she is a warm-hearted person struggling to help disabled children. I think she will lead the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s administration in a good way with that warm heart.” (The elder of Na’s two children has Down syndrome.)

Discussing unemployment in the capital, Park said, “We will specify policies so that young and elderly people can find suitable jobs.”

Adding to Park’s comment, Na said, “If I become the Seoul mayor, I will definitely make sure there’s job creation.”

Opposition lawmakers also rallied yesterday for candidate Park Won-soon, holding a support meeting for him at Gwanghwamun Plaza, central Seoul. High-profile liberal politicians such as Representative Sohn Hak-kyu, Democratic Party chairman, and People’s Participation Party head Rhyu Si-min attended the meeting for Park.

“우리 나경원 후보” 박근혜 7시간 유세 강행군

13일 오전 서울 구로 벤처기업협회 대회의실. 기업인 10여 명 앞에 한나라당 박근혜 전 대표와 나경원 서울시장 후보가 나란히 앉았다. 박 전 대표가 먼저 입을 열었다. “젊은 분들이 벤처에 뛰어들고, 실패해도 재도약할 기회를 갖는 나라를 만드는 데 정치권이 힘을 기울여야 한다. 앞으로 좋은 정책을 나경원 후보와 같이하겠다.“

박 전 대표는 발언 도중 나 후보의 팔을 살짝 잡으며 친근감을 표시했다. 이어 나 후보는 “박 전 대표와 함께 더 많은 기회를 만들어가겠다”고 했다. “시장이 할 수 있는 게 있고 중앙부처가 할 일이 있는데 중앙부처 일은 박 전 대표가 잘 챙겨주실 거라 본다”고도 했다. 박 전 대표는 “창의력 중심으로 평가받는 나라가 되도록, (웃음) 서울시가 되도록, 노력하겠다”고 다짐했다.

이날 박 전 대표는 나 후보를 지원하기 위해 7시간가량 강행군했다. 그가 선거운동에 본격 나선 것은 2007년 대선 이후 4년 만이다. 그는 관악고용지원센터를 시작으로 중소기업 2곳, 구로기계공구단지, 구로소방서 등 7곳을 오후 5시까지 쉬지 않고 돌았다. 점심은 한 기관 구내식당에서 했다. 본래 홍준표 대표, 나 후보와 같은 테이블에서 먹기로 돼 있었으나 박 전 대표가 “흩어져서 시민들과 먹자”고 해 세 사람은 다른 테이블에서 식사했다. 기자들이 ‘나 후보의 경쟁력을 어떻게 평가하나’라고 묻자 박 전 대표는 “그동안 많이 보셨잖아요. 얘기 안 해도…”라고 하다 ‘그래도 하나만 꼽아달라’는 질문을 받고 나서 “장애아동을 위해 힘썼던 따뜻한 마음으로 서울시정도 이끌 것으로 본다”고 답했다.

그래서 “일부 친박근혜계가 주장했던 ‘여성 시장-여성 대통령 불가론’과 ‘나경원 비토론’을 불식했다”는 말이 나왔다. 박 전 대표는 한 구직자를 만났을 때 곁에 서 있던 나 후보를 손짓으로 소개하며 “우리…(나경원 후보)”라고 했다. 친박계 의원은 “박 전 대표가 소극 지원할 거라 했던 일각의 우려가 기우였음이 확인된 것”이라며 “박 전 대표는 ‘걷기’와 ‘경청’의 선거운동을 할 것”이라고 말했다.

나 후보는 이날 0시를 기해 동대문시장에서 일정을 시작했다. 새벽 5시20분 용답동 서울메트로 군자차량사업소를 찾은 나 후보는 “시민의 발로 열심히 뛰겠다”고 했다. 서울메트로가 제공한 안전모와 회색 상의를 착용한 그는 ‘안전모가 어울린다’는 직원의 말에 “원래 일하는 모습이 어울리는데, 자꾸 다른 모습이 거론된다. 열심히 일하는 모습을 보여 드리겠다”고 했다.
