Gucci gets cold greeting from duty free shop

Italian brand Gucci is getting the cold shoulder from its local partners in the luxury business trade.

Gucci said it is considering filing a lawsuit against Lotte Duty Free shop, which is operated by the Lotte Hotel, for delaying the opening of a second Gucci store in Incheon International Airport.

“We’ve suffered huge losses including missed business opportunities due to the overdue opening of a store in the Lotte Duty Free shop,” Gucci Group Korea said in a press release Thursday. “We sent a final notice to Lotte to ask it to fulfill our contract and if not, we’ll have to file a suit against the company.”

Gucci said it signed a contract with Lotte in August to open a second store within the Lotte Duty Free shop in the airport. Gucci wanted the store at the airport to make up for the closure of two stores at the Shilla Duty Free shop at the airport, which is run by the Shilla Hotel.

Gucci parted ways with Shilla because it awarded Gucci’s main competitor, Louis Vuitton, an exceptionally lucrative deal. Gucci demanded similar treatment from Shilla but it was refused. It turned to Lotte instead.

“We had a written agreement with Lotte in August to open a store in the airport so we shut down two stores in Shilla Duty Free,” Gucci said in a statement. “But Lotte notified us of a postponement of the opening of our store.

“We’ll give Lotte one week and if it does not fulfill our contract, we intend to file a lawsuit and seek compensation,” the company said.

In response, Lotte said, “We are in negotiations with the airport authority and Gucci will be able to open its store soon.”

Industry observers say Gucci is getting a cold reception here because its brand has lost steam. The space Gucci wants to occupy is now selling Coach and Tumi luxury goods.

Gucci says it doesn’t want go to court. “With the final notice, we hope Lotte will sincerely cooperate on the issue,” it said.

구찌의 굴욕

루이뷔통 파격조건 유치한 신라에 같은 대우 요구했다 거절당하고
롯데면세점이 약속한 매장도 공사 차일피일 미뤄져 속앓이

이탈리아 명품 브랜드 구찌가 한국에서 ‘푸대접’ 논란에 휘말리며 면세점 입점이 지연되는 굴욕을 겪고 있다.

　구찌는 13일 롯데면세점을 상대로 손해배상 청구소송을 제기하는 방안을 검토 중이라고 밝혔다. 구찌그룹코리아는 이날 보도자료를 내고 “롯데면세점 인천공항점 매장 입점 지연으로 사업 기회 상실 등 막대한 손해를 보고 있다”고 말했다. 그러면서 “롯데면세점에 약정 이행을 촉구하는 최고장을 발송했으며 롯데면세점이 약정을 이행하지 않을 경우 소송을 제기할 수밖에 없다”고 주장했다. 구찌가 롯데면세점에 들어가기로 예정됐던 것은 지난 8월이다.

　원래 구찌는 인천공항 롯데면세점에 1개의 매장을 운영 중이었는데, 8월에 점포 1개를 추가로 개장하기로 롯데와 합의했다.

　이는 신라면세점의 루이뷔통 유치 때문이었다. 신라면세점이 파격적인 조건으로 루이뷔통을 유치하자 구찌 역시 같은 수준의 대우를 요구했지만 거절당했고, 이에 신라면세점을 박차고 나와 롯데면세점에 둥지를 틀기로 했던 것이다. 구찌 측은 이에 대해 “올 8월에 롯데면세점 인천공항점에 매장을 추가로 열기로 롯데면세점과 서면으로 합의했고, 이에 따라 신라면세점에 있던 점포 2개를 철수했다. 하지만 롯데 측으로부터 매장 공사를 연기해 달라는 통보를 받았다”고 설명했다. 구찌그룹코리아 관계자는 “(최고장 발송을 통해) 롯데면세점에 약속을 이행하라는 의사 표시를 명확하게 한 것이며 1주일의 기간을 준 뒤 여전히 이행하지 않으면 손해배상 소송 제기를 검토하겠다”고 말했다.

　롯데면세점 측은 이에 대해 “공항공사와 잘 협의가 진행되고 있고 조만간 매장을 열 수 있을 것으로 생각한다”는 원론적인 입장만을 반복하고 있다.

　대표적인 명품 브랜드인 구찌가 이 같은 수모를 당하는 것에 대해 업계에서는 구찌 제품의 인기가 예전 같지 않기 때문이라는 해석을 내놓고 있다.

　롯데가 수수료 혜택을 주면서까지 구찌를 추가로 들여놓는 게 영업에 크게 도움이 되지 않아 굳이 서두르지 않고 있다는 것이다. 현재 구찌가 입점하기로 한 자리에는 ‘코치’ ‘투미’ 등의 브랜드가 영업 중이다. 수개월이 걸리는 매장 공사를 아직 시작도 못한 상황이라 연내 개장도 쉽지 않다. 하지만 구찌는 롯데와 소송까지 가기를 원하지는 않고 있다. 구찌코리아는 “추가적인 법적 소송 조치 없이 이번 최고장 발송을 계기로 롯데면세점 측이 성의를 가지고 문제 해결에 적극 협조해 주기를 기대하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
