On Capitol Hill, Lee hails strong alliance with U.S.

In his speech, Lee emphasized bolstered ties between the two countries, saying that the alliance has contributed to mutual development. Lee stressed that the two countries should further deepen and widen the alliance to walk a path of peace and prosperity together.
Lee also expressed appreciation for congressional approval of a free trade agreement between Seoul and Washington, which came on Wednesday.
“The Korea-US Free Trade Agreement was ratified by this Congress here last night,” Lee said. “Here, where the Mutual Defense Treaty was signed by Korea and the United States in 1953, a new chapter in our relationship has opened. Our relationship has become stronger. “
Calling the trade pact “a historic achievement, a win-win for both countries,” Lee said, “This agreement is a major step toward future growth and job creation. It is a win for our corporations. It is a win for our workers. It is a win for small businesses. And it is a win for all the innovators on both sides of the Pacific.”
Lee also gave thanks for the U.S.-Korea alliance and the American role in defending the South, citing Korean War veterans who are now members of Congress. “Our mutual defense keeps us strong,” Lee said. “And it keeps us safe. Ours is an alliance forged in blood. That is how we Koreans describe it.”
After describing his personal pains during the Korean War, along with those of other Koreans, Lee said he understands the reality of the division of Korea, but he “will never accept it as a permanent condition.”
“The two Koreas share the same language, history and customs. We are one people,” he said. “In both Koreas, there are families who have never spoken to their loved ones for more than half a century. My hope is that these people and all 70 million Koreans will enjoy real happiness, real peace.”
Stressing that “a unified Korea will be a friend to all and a threat to none,” Lee urged North Korea to give up its nuclear arms programs and stressed the importance of a coordinated stance between Seoul and Washington. Lee said the six-party talks to denuclearize the North were an effective way to achieve tangible progress. He said the North’s development will depend on “its willingness to end all provocations and make genuine peace.”
Lee’s address received an enthusiastic response, interrupted by applause 45 times, including five standing ovations. Following the speech, a long queue was formed by the lawmakers to meet Lee. Ahead of the speech, Lee and U.S. President Barack Obama had a summit at the White House and discussed a wide range of issues in a candid manner, the Blue House said. The two leaders addressed a joint news conference after the summit and the free trade agreement, the strong alliance between the two countries and the commitment to end Pyongyang’s nuclear arms programs were reaffirmed.
Obama stressed that Seoul and Washington are “entirely united” on the North Korea issue, adding that they have “succeeded in changing the equation with the North by showing that its provocations will be met not with rewards, but with even stronger sanctions and isolations.”
Obama also said North Korea won’t be an exception from the democratization movement, pointing to recent events in the Middle East. Asked about the ambitious project of building a gas pipeline from Russia to South Korea through the North, Lee said progress is not imminent. “It’s not something that will see immediate progress,” Lee said. “It will take some time, and there will be progress in inter-Korean relations and nuclear issues during its course.”
Lee also said the economic aspect of the project will be calculated as a priority, but the security aspect will also be taken into account. While admitting to slow progress, Lee still promoted the project by saying that the deal would be economically beneficial for all three countries.
Later on Thursday, Lee attended a state dinner hosted at the White House with hundreds of dignitaries. The U.S.-Korean alliance was celebrated as first lady Michelle Obama wore a purple, one-shouldered gown by Korean-American designer Doo-Ri Chung, while Korean first lady Kim Yoon-ok wore a pink traditional hanbok. The menu highlighted “the best of local produce combined with Korean flavors and traditions,” according to the White House.

李대통령 美의회 연설서 45차례 박수
입ㆍ퇴장 포함 기립박수도 5차례..연설 뒤 의원들 사인 공세
"프라이드 치킨 좋아해" "여전히 젊어보인다" 애드리브도
이명박 대통령의 13일(현지시간) 미국 의회 상ㆍ하원 합동회의 연설은 의원들의 뜨거운 호응 속에 약 45분간 진행됐다.
당초 연설 소요시간을 약 30여분 정도로 예상했지만 이 대통령의 입장과 퇴장 때를 포함해 모두 45차례나 의원들의 박수가 터지면서 연설시간이 길어졌다.
45차례의 박수는 오바마 정부 출범 이후 상ㆍ하원 합동회의 연설을 한 외국 국가원수 가운데 최다 기록이다.
오바마 정부에서 상ㆍ하원 합동연설을 한 외국 정상은 이 대통령까지 모두 6명으로, 이전 최다 기록은 베냐민 네타냐후 이스라엘 총리가 세운 26차례였다.
45차례의 박수 가운데 기립 박수도 5차례에 달했을 만큼 이 대통령의 연설은 미 상ㆍ하원 의원들로부터 공감을 얻었다.
검은색 정장에 붉은색 넥타이를 맨 이 대통령이 이날 오후 미 하원 본회의장에 입장하자 의원들은 열렬한 기립박수로 환영했다. 부인 김윤옥 여사는 차녀 승연 씨와 함께 귀빈석에서 이 대통령의 연설 모습을 지켜봤다.
이 대통령은 연단으로 오르면서 의원들과 반갑게 악수를 했고, 연단에 오른 뒤에도 기립 박수가 계속되자 손을 흔들며 영어로 `땡큐(감사합니다)`라고 사례했다.
이 대통령은 존 베이너 하원의장의 소개를 받은 뒤 연설을 시작했고 미 의회의 한미 자유무역협정(FTA) 신속 비준을 높이 평가하자 첫번째 갈채가 터졌다.
그리고 의원들과 미국 국민을 향해 "아버지와 할아버지의 신의를 지켜나가고 있는 데 대해 깊이 감사드린다"고 한 대목에서 두번째 기립 박수가 나왔다.
이어 한국전쟁에 참전했던 의원들을 일일이 호명하자 상ㆍ하원 의원들은 일제히 함성을 지르며 다시 기립박수를 쳤다.
이 대통령은 한국전 참전 의원들에게 영어로 "You are still young. You look a young boy.(여전히 젊어 보인다. 소년같다)"고 덕담을 건네기도 했다.
상ㆍ하원 의원들은 이 대통령이 북한의 핵 포기를 촉구한 대목과 퇴장 전 연설 말미에 영어로 "God bless you, God bless America.(신의 가호가 있기를)"라고 덕담한 대목에서 역시 기립박수로 화답했다.
두 차례의 `영어 덕담`은 연설 원고에 없던 `애드리브(즉흥 연설)`였다.
이 대통령은 한미 양국이 공유하는 가치들을 나열하면서 "나는 개인적으로 프라이드 치킨도 좋아한다"고 재차 애드리브를 해 박수를 받기도 했다.
연설이 끝나자 상ㆍ하원 의원들은 앞다퉈 이 대통령에게 몰려와 사인을 받는 진풍경이 연출되기도 했다.
이 대통령은 지난 8일 청와대에서 연설 최종 독회를 할 때 프롬프터까지 설치하고 초 단위로 시간을 맞추는 연습을 해가면서 연설의 완결성을 기했다는 후문이다.
이에 앞서 이 대통령과 오바마 대통령은 이날 오전 백악관에서 단독ㆍ정상회담을 각각 1시간20분, 40분간 진지하고도 격의없는 허심탄회한 대화를 나눈 것으로 알려졌다.
단독회담은 대통령 집무실인 오벌오피스(Oval office)에서, 확대회담은 각료회의실(Cabinet room)에서 진행됐다.
이 같은 분위기는 백악관 이스트룸에서 열린 공동기자회견에서도 그대로 묻어났다. 우천으로 인해 로즈가든에서 이스트룸에서 장소가 변경됐으나, 두 정상은 각각 모두 발언을 하면서 악수와 깊은 포옹을 나누면서 돈독한 우위를 과시했다.
이어 이 대통령 내외는 낮 국무부 벤자민 프랭클린 룸에서 조지프 바이든 부통령 내외와 힐러리 클린턴 국무장관 주최 국빈 오찬에 참석했다.
오찬에는 공식ㆍ특별수행원과 경제인을 비롯한 우리측 인사와 미국측 인사 등 모두 250여명이 참석하는 `매머드 행사`로 진행됐다.
한국측 인사로는 `피겨 퀸` 김연아, 하버드 법대 첫 동양계 여성 종신교수인 지니 석(석지영)씨, 브루스 커밍스 교수의 부인인 우정은 버지니아대 학장, 나이트라인 앵커인 주주 장(장현주), 드라마 `ER`에 출연했던 여배우 스미스 조, 하워드 고(고경주) 미국 보건부 차관보 등이 초청됐다.
미국측 인사로는 존 티렐리 전 주한미군사령관, 도널드 그레그ㆍ토마스 허바드ㆍ스테판 보스워스 전 주한 미국 대사, 빅터 차 조지타운대 교수 등이다. 이 대통령의 차녀 승연(38)씨도 가족대표로 참석했다.
바이든 부통령과 클린턴 국무장관은 환영사와 건배사를 통해 이 대통령의 국빈방미와 국무부 방문을 환영하며 이 대통령의 한미동맹 강화에 대한 기여와 G20(주요 20개국) 등 국제무대에서의 리더십을 높이 평가했다.
이에 대해 이 대통령은 바이든 부통령과 클린턴 국무장관이 한미관계 증진에 기여하고 한반도의 평화와 안정을 위해 적극적인 노력을 기울인 점과 미국의 여수 엑스포 참여에 큰 역할을 해준 데 대해 사의를 표명했다.
특히 바이든 부통령이 건배사를 통해 "이 대통령이 예전에 불도저 개선방법을 찾기 위해 완전히 해체했다가 재조립해 별명이 `불도저`"라고 하자, 이 대통령은 "그 불도저가 미국 캐터필터사 제품"이라고 해 좌중에 웃음을 자아내기도 했다,
