Seoul gets two ‘occupy’ rallies today

Leftists will stage two rallies today, inspired by the Occupy Wall Street Movement growing out of the United States.

On the day when people in 400 cities worldwide kick off rallies against worldwide financial problems and inequities, activists in Seoul have organized two rallies today, Occupy Seoul and Occupy Yeouido.

While protestors in Yeouido, the financial hub of Korea, will focus on issues related to the finance sector, such as demanding more transparency in the banking industry, the Occupy Seoul rally in front of Seoul Station will deal with a range of issues embraced by the left, including protests against the Korea-U.S. FTA ratification, industry’s increased reliance on temporary workers, the government’s four-rivers restoration project and the U.S.-ROK Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

Local police said that most of the groups participating in the Occupy Seoul rally are aggressive leftist groups such as the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions.

“Previously, we have seen that protestors tend to become aggressive in a rally dealing with so many different issues,” a police official said.

The host of Occupy Seoul, which calls itself the Group for Joint Action for the 99 Percent,” is a coalition of liberal civic groups. They said that the rally will continue until Sunday, moving from the train station to City Hall Plaza in central Seoul.

But Namdaemun police officially warned the activists Thursday to avoid City Hall because the plaza is already reserved for an agricultural fair by the government of Pocheon, Gyeonggi.

“As the Occupy Seoul rally is being held by many civic groups, some of them will likely violate our ban on their protest,” an official at the Namdaemun police precinct said. “We will strictly deal with those who ignore our warning [not to enter the plaza].”

Police predicted about 5,000 people will join the Occupy Seoul protest today.

An official coordinating the Occupy Yeouido rally told the JoongAng Ilbo Thursday he’s worried that the Occupy Seoul rally will turn violent.

“We are concerned that if the apparently ideological rallyists get too aggressive and clash with police,” he said, “the public will criticize our rally as well.”

15일 "1%에 저항하는 99%, 서울을 점령하라"

금융자본의 탐욕으로 인한 사회 양극화 문제를 해결하기 위한 `반(反) 월스트리트 시위`가 15일 서울에서도 여의도, 서울역광장, 서울시청광장 등에서 열릴 예정이다.

금융소비자협회, 투기자본감시센터, 금융소비자권리찾기연석회의, 참여연대 등은 `여의도를 점령하라- 금융수탈 1%에 저항하는 99%`라는 주제로 뜻을 같이 하는 시민들과 함께 15일 오후 2시 금융위원회 앞에서 집회를 개최한다.

이들은 "금융자본의 탐욕과 그로인한 사회양극화 문제는 미국의 것만이 아니다"며 "한국도 론스타 사건, 키코(KIKO), 저축은행 사태와 가계부채 문제 등 금융정책의 실패가 자리잡고 있다"고 집회 이유를 설명했다.

이들은 금융정책과 관련해 △관료 책임 규명 △금융규제 △피해자 배상이라는 세 가지 요구조건을 내세울 계획이다.

이들은 2차 행동도 21일 오후 5시 금융위원회 앞에서 한다고 밝힌 상태다.

이와 함께 빈곤사회연대 김윤영씨가 페이스북 페이지를 통해 알린 것처럼15일 오후 2시 서울역 광장에서는 `
OCCUPY SEOUL! 민중의 힘으로 세상을 바꾸자!` 시위도 열린다.

집회 참여 페이스북 페이지를 개설한 김씨는 "UN이 정한 10월 17일 빈곤철폐의 날을 맞이해 집회를 준비해 계획해왔다"며 "때마침 `반 월가 시위운동`을 15일 전세계에서 벌이자는 SNS 제안을 보고 페이스북 페이지를 개설했다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "월스트리트 시위대가 외치는 주장은 우리 단체(빈곤사회연대)가 주장하는 바와 매우 비슷하다"며 "한국의 집회법이 까다롭기 때문에 우리가 준비하던 집회를 확대하자는 차원에서시위를 준비했다"고 밝혔다.

14일 현재 이 시위에 참여하겠다고 페이스북을 통해 의사를 밝힌 인원은 150명이다.

15일 서울에서 열리는 `반 월가 시위`는 이뿐만이 아니다.

`새로운 사회를 여는 연구원(새사연)`도 15일 오후 6시 중구 대한문 앞에서 `세계 400개국에서 함께 하는 99%의 시위에 참가해 이야기를 나누자`며 길거리 번개집회를 연다고 페이스북을 통해 밝히고 있다.

오후 7시부터는 정태인 원장의 길거리 강연도 준비돼 있다.

이 시위에는 현재 페이스북을 통해 18명이 참석의사를 밝힌 상태다.

또 30여개 시민단체가 중심이 된 `99% 공동행동 준비회의`가 15일 오후 6시 서울 시청광장에서 `1%에 맞서는 99%, 분노하는 99%, 광장을 점령하라`는 슬로건을 내세운 `Occupy 서울 국제 공동 행동의 날` 집회를 열고 금융자본을 중심으로 한 신자유주의의 폐해에 대해 지적하고 개선을 촉구할 방침이다.

앞선 단체들도 오후 6시에는 서울광장으로 모여시위에 합류할 예정이다.

한편, 경찰은 오후2시에 열리는 여의도와 서울역광장의 집회는 허가했지만 서울시청광장에서 열릴 예정인 집회는 불허 통보를 한 상태다.

경찰은"서울광장에서 포천시가 주최하는 농특산물전시행사가 16일까지 진행되기 때문에 집회금지 통보를 했다"고 밝혔다.

집회 주최측은 경찰의 불허에도 시위를 강행할 뜻을 내비치고 있고 시위 참여를 희망하는 개인과 단체들이 늘어날 경우경찰과의 충돌도 예상되고 있다.
