이런 시각은 20세기에 와서도 달라지지 않았다. 히틀러에게 여자는 그저 ‘군인 아들 낳는 어머니’ ‘군수품 만드는 공장 근로자’였을 뿐이라지만, 그것은 악의 제국에 맞선 자유세계도 다르지 않았다. 제2차 세계대전이 끝난 뒤 미국 정부의 최우선 과제는 여성들을 노동시장에서 몰아내는 것이었다. 집으로 돌아오는 1100만 명의 제대 군인들에게 일자리를 제공해야 했기 때문이다.

ⓕ not very different → not much different 아주 다르지 않은 것이 아니라 많이 다르지 않은 것임
