Lee makes unprecedented visit to Pentagon

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak paid an unprecedented visit to the Pentagon on Wednesday and received a briefing from top American military officials on North Korea and other security issues, the presidential office said. Lee is the first South Korean president to visit the Pentagon.

이명박 한국 대통령이 수요일 펜타곤(미 국방성)을 방문해 미국 군 지휘관들로부터 북한과 안보 현안에 대해 브리핑을 받았다고 청와대가 밝혔다. 한국 대통령이 펜타곤을 방문한 전례는 없었으며 이 대통령이 펜타곤을 방문한 최초의 한국 대통령이 됐다.
The unscheduled event was organized after the U.S. invited Lee, saying it wanted to brief him on Washington’s position regarding the security situation on the Korean Peninsula, the presidential office said.

펜타곤 방문은 미리 계획되지 않았으나 미국측이 한반도의 안보상황에 대한 미국의 입장을 브리핑하고 싶다며 이 대통령을 초청하면서 성사됐다고 청와대는 밝혔다.
“The U.S. government's invitation of President Lee to the Pentagon is an act of showing respect to the head of state of the ally South Korea and reaffirming the firm U.S. commitment to security on the Korean Peninsula,” a presidential official said.

청와대 관계자는 “미국 정부가 이 대통령을 펜타곤에 초청한 것은 동맹인 한국 국가원수를 예우한 것이고 한반도 안보에 대한 미국의 확고한 공약 의지를 재확인한 것”이라고 설명했다.
The U.S. participants in the meeting included Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey and other top American military commanders, such as the chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force, the office said.

이 브리핑에는 리언 패네타 국방장관, 마틴 뎀프시 합참의장, 육, 해, 공군 참모총장 등 미군 수뇌부들이 참석했다고 청와대는 밝혔다.
The briefing was held in the Pentagon’s secure “Tank Room,” making Lee the first foreign leader to get a security briefing in the room, the office said.
이 대통령은 펜타곤의 심장부인 ‘탱크룸’에서 브리핑을 받았는데, 외국 정상이 ‘탱크룸’에서 안보 정세에 대해 브리핑을 받은 것은 처음이라고 청와대는 말했다.
During the briefing, JCS Chairman Dempsey reported to Lee that the U.S. military is ready for any kind of security situation on the Korean Peninsula, and Lee offered his praise, according to Kim Tae-hyo, a key presidential security aide.

뎀프시 미 합참의장은 이 대통령에게 미군은 한반도 안보문제에 대해 어떤 상황이 와도 대처할 준비가 돼있다고 보고했고, 이에 이 대통령은 격려했다고 김태효 청와대 대외전략비서관이 전했다.
