In Korea, with its strict compulsory military service, how leaders fared in the military is a very sensitive issue, particularly at times of confrontation with North Korea./ 엄격한 의무 군복무제를 시행하고 있는 한국에서 병역의무를 어떻게 마쳤느냐는 매우 민감한 문제로 특히 북한과 대치하고 있는 시기에 그렇다/ As a result, Lee Hoi-chang, former presidential candidate for the GNP, was critically wounded by his son’s suspicious exemption from service./ 결과적으로 전 하나라당 대통령 후보였던 이회창 후보도 아들의 의심스러운 병역면제로 심각한 타격을 입었다/ President Lee Myung-bak also had to explain why he didn’t have to serve in the military./ 이명박 대통령도 왜 자신이 병역을 마치지 않은 것에 대해 설명을 해야만 했다/
There are some doubts about Park’s adoption./ 박후보의 입양에는 몇 가지 의심스러운 점이 있다/ Even though adoption was often used to ensure the continuity of rites honoring ancestors, the timing of his adoption could have been further delayed until Park came of age./ 설령 조상을 모시기 위한 제사를 지내기 위해 종종 입양을 하곤 했다고는 하지만, 입양 시기를 박후보가 성장할 때까지 더 연기할 수도 있었을 것이다/ In other words, he could have been adopted after having served in the military as an active-duty soldier./ 다시 말해, 군복무를 마치고 난 후에도 입양을 할 수도 있었다는 것이다/
Park’s fuzzy attitude on the issue rings alarm bells./ 그 문제에 대한 박후보의 분명하지 않은 태도도 문제다/ If someone really wants to be a respected leader of our society, he or she must clearly explain all suspicions about their past./ 만약 누군가가 우리 사회에서 존경받는 지도자가 되기를 원한다면 자신의 과거에 대해 의심스러운 모든 것을 분명하게 설명을 해야 한다/ Whether Park chose an alternative military service because of his family’s decision or not, he must give a full account of how the decision was made./ 본인이 대체 복무를 선택했건 가족의 결정에 의해 그렇게 되었건 아니건 간에 그렇게 된 것에 대해 상세하게 설명을 해야만 한다/ And if something went wrong, he should apologize./ 그리고 만약 잘못된 점이 있으면 박후보는 사과해야 한다/ If he chooses to get around such a serious issue in other ways, it will only trigger a profound distrust of his integrity as a leader./ 만약 다른 방식으로 그러한 심각한 문제를 대충 얼버무린다면 지도자로서의 박후보의 진실성에 많은 불신만 초래할 뿐이다/ He should not forget that./ 박후보는 그러한 것을 잊어서는 안 된다/
