Susan Sarandon calls Pope Benedict a Nazi: Report
The movie star, who won an Oscar for her role in the 1995 antideath penalty film “Dead Man Walking,” said she had sent a copy of the book on which the movie is based to the pope.
“The last one. Not this Nazi one we have now,” she was reported as saying by Newsday newspaper.
The remark was made on Saturday in an interview conducted by fellow actor Bob Balaban about Sarandon’s career that was part of the Hamptons Film Festival.
Newsday said Balaban gently chided Sarandon for the remark but she repeated it.
Sarandon’s Hollywood agent did not respond to calls for comment on Monday.
German-born Pope Benedict, formerly Joseph Ratzinger, was briefly a member of the Hitler Youth in the early 1940s when membership was compulsory, the Vatican has said. He deserted the military during World War II and has said that as devout Catholics, his parents rejected Nazi ideology.
Sarandon, 65, who was raised in New York as a Roman Catholic, is known for her support of causes ranging from hunger and AIDS to opposing the U.S.-led war in Iraq. The “Thelma and Louise” star was appointed a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador in 1999.
The New York-based Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights called Sarandon’s remark “obscene” and said in a Monday statement that her “ignorance is willful.”

수잔 서랜든 "교황 베네딕토는 나치" 논란
미국 할리우드 스타이자 사회 활동가인 수잔 서랜든(65·여)이 교황 베네딕토 16세를 `나치`라고 주장해 논란이 일고 있다.
서랜든은 미국 뉴욕 필름페스티벌에서 교황 베네딕토 16세를 나치라고 주장했다고 현지 언론 뉴스데이가 17일(현지시간) 보도했다.
서랜든은 "교황을 소재로 한 영화 시나리오의 복사본을 받았다"며 "결코 나치이지 않았어야 할 사람이 지금의 교황이 됐다"고 말했다.
서랜든은 지난 15일 동료 배우 밥 발라반과의 인터뷰에서도 `교황이 나치`라고 언급한 뒤 발라반으로부터 질타를 받았지만 또 다시 같은 주장을 반복했다고 뉴스데이는 전했다.
서랜든의 주장에 바티칸 교황청은 "독일에서 출생한 본명 요제프 라칭어(교황 베네딕토 16세)는 1940년대 `히틀러 유겐트(Hitler Youth)` 소속이었지만 히틀러 유겐트는 회원 자격이 강제적이었다"고 해명했다. 히틀러 유겐트는 1926년 독일 나치당에 의해 설립된 청소년 조직이다.
교황청은 이어 "교황은 제2차 세계대전 당시 조직에서 나왔으며 그의 부모는 나치 이념을 거부했다"고 강조했다.
종교단체들은 서랜든을 향한 비난의 목소리를 높이면서 논란이 불거지고 있다.
뉴욕에 본부를 둔 가톨릭단체 `가톨릭 연맹`은 "서랜든의 무지함은 고의적이며 역겹다"고 비판했다.
미국 유대인단체 `반-비방연맹(ADL)`은 "서랜든이 가톨릭과 차이를 갖고 있을 지도 모르지만 핑계는 될 수 없다"며 서랜든의 공식 사과를 요청했다.
서랜든의 소속사는 현재 구체적인 언급을 삼가고 있다.
