Jong-un’s title: It’s ‘Respected General’ to you

The third son of Kim Jong-il and heir apparent Kim Jong-un, 27, has been bestowed the title “Respected General,” a South Korean government official said.

The official said Tuesday that a clip of Kim Jong-il’s visit to Yongsung machinery plant televised the previous day on North Korean television showed a plaque in the background referring to Kim Jong-un as “Respected General,” another indication that he is indeed his father’s appointed successor.

The plaque commemorating Kim Jong-un’s visit to the plant in the city of Hamhung read, “Sungun Iron Factory, visited by the Respected Kim Jong-un General.” Next to it was a plaque to the “Dear Leader” commemorating Kim Jong-il’s visit to the factory, which was next to a plaque to the “Great Leader” to commemorate a visit by Kim Il Sung.

Kim Jong-un, son of Kim Jong-il’s late third wife, Ko Yong-hui, often thought to be his favorite wife, was educated in Switzerland and has been speculated to have bypassed his two older half-brothers to be designated as heir.

In September 2010, Kim Jong-un made his first public appearance at the Workers’ Party convention in Pyongyang, sparking speculation that he was the likely successor. Despite his lack of military experience, Kim Jong-un was given the rank of four-star general and was appointed vice chairman of the Central Military Commission. In February, Kim was appointed to a senior position on the National Defense Commission, putting him second in command only to his father.

While North Korean officials have mentioned Kim Jong-un as his father’s successor, with the son receiving gifts inscribed to “General Fortune,” this week’s confirmation appeared to indicate that “Respected General” was the official sobriquet for Kim Jong-un.

The designation signified a build-up of the son’s authority, the South Korean official surmised. The term “respected” was first used in reference to Kim Jong-il in 1977, who at that time followed Kim Il Sung in preparation to succeed him. The current phase of Kim Jong-un’s ascension bears many similarities to his father’s transition into leadership.

Meanwhile, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on Tuesday said that “Kim Jong-il’s health has improved greatly due to intensive treatment from a group of exclusive doctors.” The NIS said that the leader recently traveled to France for eye treatment from an ophthalmologist before returning home to North Korea.

‘존경하는 대장 동지’ 위상 높아진 김정은

김일성에게 후계수업 받던 1977년 김정일 위상과 비슷

북한이 김정일(69) 국방위원장의 후계자인 셋째 아들 김정은(27·사진)에게 ‘존경하는 대장 동지’라는 호칭을 쓰고 있는 것으로 확인됐다. 정부 당국자는 18일 “북한 관영 조선중앙TV가 17일 방영한 김정일의 함남 함흥시 용성기계연합기업소 방문 영상을 분석하던 중 김정은을 ‘존경하는 대장 동지’라고 표현한 문구를 포착했다”고 말했다. 김정은이 이 공장을 다녀간 것을 기념하기 위해 걸어놓은 액자에는 ‘존경하는 김정은 대장 동지께서 다녀가신 선군 주철공장’이라고 표기돼 있다. 바로 옆 김일성과 김정일 액자에는 각각 ‘위대한 수령’ ‘위대한 영도자’로 쓰여져 있다.

　지난해 9월 노동당 대표자회에서 공개 석상에 처음 등장하며 후계자로 지위를 굳힌 김정은은 ‘당 중앙군사위 부위원장’과 ‘조선인민군 대장’ 직함을 갖고 있다. 당국자는 “북한이 ‘김정은 대장이 후계자가 된 건 인민들의 복(福)’이란 의미에서 ‘대장복’이라고 쓰인 선전물을 내건 적은 있지만 호칭이 확인된 건 이번이 처음”이라고 말했다.

　김정은에 대한 호칭 사용은 그의 권력 구축이 탄력을 받고 있음을 보여주는 것으로 분석된다. 당국자는 “김정일도 ‘존경하는’이라는 표현이 처음 등장한 1977년 당시에는 권력 전면에 나서지 않고 김일성을 수행하며 후계 준비를 했다”며 “김정은의 현재 위상도 당시 김정일과 유사한 측면이 많다”고 설명했다.

　◆“김정일 건강, 전담 의사단 덕분에 호전”/=18일 국회 정보위 국정감사에서 국가정보원은 “김정일 위원장의 건강이 전담 의사단의 집중치료 덕분에 많이 좋아졌다”고 밝혔다. 국정원은 “최근 프랑스에서 안과 전문의가 김 위원장 치료차 북한에 입국했다”고 보고했다. 이에 한 정보위원이 ‘김 위원장에게 전담 ‘여의사단’이 있지 않느냐’고 묻자 국정원 측은 “여의사뿐 아니라 전담 의사단이 있는 것이 확실하다”고 답했다.

　김 위원장의 장손 김한솔(16)이 최근 보스니아로 간 배경과 관련해 ‘작은 아버지인 김정은과의 알력 때문이 아니냐’는 질문에는 “김정은이 형 김정남과 알력 관계가 있을 수 있으나 조카인 김한솔과는 일면식도 없다”고 답했다. 이날 국감은 민주당 의원들이 기무사의 민간인 사찰사건과 관련해 증인 채택을 요구하며 전원 퇴장해 한나라당 단독으로 이뤄졌다.
