From dowdy to dandy, Park turns to suits sans tie

Dressed in a dark gray suit with a blue shirt and no tie, Park projected a classic, groomed appearance - a far cry from his usual dowdy attire he has now given up for the campaign trail.
The evolution in Park’s fashion has been dramatic, observers said.
“In the past, he wore clothes that reminded you of a student activist who lacked professionalism,” said Bae Jong-chan from the polling firm Research & Research.
At the September press conference where Park received Ahn Cheol-soo’s endorsement, propelling the civic activist into an early lead, Park showed up in a modernized hanbok, the preferred attire of leftists.
“But now, he is presenting a smart, clean look,” Bae said.
Just as his opponent, former Representative Na Kyung-won, has chosen outfits to distance herself from her upper-crust image, so, too, is Park, albeit in the opposite direction.
Park’s outfits, one could say, are now smart office attire: a dark suit sans tie with a blue shirt.
The blue shirt Park wore at the subway station, an aide said, was chosen carefully “to emphasize the creative, yet professional image of a candidate with a background in civic movements.” The shirt cost about 45,000 won ($39) and was custom-made for him from a tailor.
Going tieless has become part of his look. “When he meets with students and workers in their 20s and 30s, who are Park’s base, he doesn’t wear a tie,” said an aide. “That’s to highlight his image as a candidate who can relate with the youth.”
Park has also begun paying attention to other details. He wore different eyeglass frames at a recent event, and he is taking care of his skin, using makeup for the first time. A stylist has been brought on board to do his hair and keep him looking polished.
“Park first felt awkward about listening to the stylist’s instructions, but he is now paying attention to his look,” a campaign official said. “In the past, he didn’t even apply lotion on his face, but now he is moisturizing as he has more and more face-to-face encounters with voters.”

10·26 서울시장 보궐선거판엔 늘 등장하던 파란색(한나라당)·초록색(민주당) ‘정당 점퍼’가 사라졌다. 대신 나경원·박원순 후보는 자신이 표현하고 싶은 메시지에 걸맞은 옷차림을 선보이고 있다. 두 후보의 패션엔 각자의 ‘승리 코드’가 담겨 있는 셈이다.
박원순, 시민운동가 → 전문가
19일 오전 8시30분 서울 영등포구 여의도역. 박원순 후보가 출근길 직장인들에게 손을 붙잡고 지지를 호소했다. 짙은 회색 정장에 푸른색 셔츠를 받쳐 입은 박 후보는 ‘노타이’ 차림이었다. 푸른색은 깔끔하면서도 차분한 인상을 줘 전문직 종사자와 은행원들이 선호하는 색이다. 박 후보 캠프 관계자는 “시민단체 출신의 창의적인 전문가 이미지를 강조하기 위해 푸른색 셔츠를 입고 있다”고 설명했다.
박 후보의 패션 코드는 ‘오피스 룩’이다. 지난 13일 공식 선거운동이 시작되면서 박 후보는 주로 푸른색 와이셔츠를 입었다. 그 위에 남색 정장이나 진회색 정장을 걸쳤다. 와이셔츠는 4만5000원 상당으로 양복점에서 부인이 맞춰 준 것이라고 한다. 직장인 이미지를 강조해 지지층에 어필하려는 취지로 보인다.
그는 대부분의 일정에 넥타이를 매지 않는다. 지난 17일 고려대에서 학생들과 만나 등록금과 관련된 의견을 들을 때도 넥타이를 매지 않았다. 셔츠의 첫 번째 단추는 꼭 풀었다. 박 후보 선대위 관계자는 “박 후보의 주요 지지층인 20~30대 대학생과 직장인들을 만나는 자리에서는 젊은 이미지를 강조하기 위해 노타이 차림을 주로 한다”고 말했다. 여론조사기관인 리서치앤리서치 배종찬 본부장은 “박 후보가 기존에는 ‘운동권 패션’을 연상시키는, 다소 전문성이 부족해 보이는 패션을 선보였으나 최근엔 의상을 잘 갖춰 입음으로써 전문가적인 이미지를 제고하려 하고 있다”고 평가했다. 블루 계열은 중도·보수층의 반감이 덜하고 노동자와 소외계층을 대변하는 색이기도 하다.
박 후보는 안경이나 패션소품 등 ‘디테일’에도 신경 쓰고 있다. 그는 지난 13일 공식 선거운동 시작과 함께 앞치마를 걸치고 시민들과 만났다. 광화문에서 열린 유세 현장에서 앞치마를 들어 보이며 “지난 10년간 서울시정을 깨끗이 씻어 버리고 새로운 서울을 만들겠다”고 강조했다. 그는 민주당과 함께 공동 유세에 나설 땐 녹색 스카프도 두른다. 안경은 뿔테와 무테 등을 분위기에 맞게 번갈아 가면서 착용했다.
박 후보는 평소 스킨과 로션을 바르지 않는 ‘생얼(민낯)’을 하는 경우가 많았다. 하지만 시민들과의 접촉이 빈번해지자 스킨·로션을 바르기 시작했다. 머리와 옷매무새를 담당하는 코디네이터도 뒀다. 선대위 관계자는 “처음엔 코디네이터 말에 따르는 걸 어색해했지만 지금은 외모에 신경을 많이 쓴다”며 “평소엔 화장은커녕 스킨·로션도 바르지 않았는데 시민들과 직접 대면하면서 로션 정도는 바르고 있다”고 말했다.
