Pujols hits 3 HRs, Cards take a 2-1 Series lead

ARLINGTON, Texas - Albert Pujols joined Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson as the only players to hit three home runs in a World Series game as the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Texas Rangers 16-7 on Saturday to take a 2-1 series lead.

Pujols also matched a World Series record with six RBIs in one game.

Thirty-six of 54 teams that won Game 3 to take a 2-1 World Series lead have gone on to take the title, including 10 of the last 11.

Pujols hit a long three-run homer that helped the Cardinals open a 12-6 lead after six innings.

He added a two-run shot in the seventh and a solo homer in the ninth.

Following two relatively routine games during a split in St. Louis, the teams played a messy Texas shootout that saw the fourth and fifth innings alone drag on for one hour, 22 minutes and the game itself last more than four hours.

After taking a 5-0 lead, St. Louis allowed Texas to score three runs in the bottom half of the fourth. St. Louis then opened an 8-3 lead in the fifth, but the Rangers closed to 8-6 in the bottom of the inning and had the bases loaded when Ian Kinsler hit an inning-ending popup.

Pujols followed in the sixth with a 423-foot drive off Alexi Ogando that hit the wall above the restaurant windows in left field, and Yadier Molina added a sacrifice fly.

Former President and former Rangers owner George W. Bush sat in the front row next to the Texas dugout with Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan and former first lady, Laura Bush.

In Game 4 today, Derek Holland pitches for the Rangers and Edwin Jackson starts for the Cardinals.

괴물 푸홀스 ‘3연타석 홈런’으로 세인트루이스 2승

앨버트 푸홀스의 3연타석 홈런을 앞세운 세인트루이스가 월드시리즈에서 먼저 2승째를 올렸다.

세인트루이스는 23일(한국시간) 미국 텍사스 알링턴 레인저스 볼파크에서 열린 메이저리그 월드시리즈 3차전에서 홈런 세 방을 포함해 6타수 5안타 6타점을 올린 푸홀스의 맹활약에 힘입어 텍사스에 16-7 대승을 거뒀다. 1승 1패로 맞선 가운데 원정 3연전에 나선 세인트루이스는 먼저 2승째를 챙기며 2006년 이후 5년 만의 우승에 한 걸음 다가섰다.

투수전이었던 1·2차전과 달리 3차전은 난타전으로 전개됐다. 4·5회에만 세인트루이스가 7점, 텍사스가 6점을 올렸다. 경기 중반의 혼전은 푸홀스의 홈런으로 정리됐다. 푸홀스는 8-6으로 앞선 6회초 왼쪽 담장을 넘기는 스리런 홈런을 날렸고, 12-6으로 앞선 7회초에는 투런 아치를 그려 텍사스의 추격 의지를 꺾었다.

그는 15-7로 앞선 9회초에도 솔로 홈런을 쳐 팀의 대승을 완성했다. 1차전에서 2타수 무안타에 고의4구와 몸에 맞는 공, 2차전에서 4타수 무안타에 그쳤던 푸홀스는 3차전 활약으로 그동안의 부진을 완전히 털어냈다.

1승 2패로 몰린 텍사스는 24일 4차전에 데릭 홀랜드를 선발로 내세워 설욕에 나선다. 세인트루이스는 에드윈 잭슨을 선발로 예고했다. 두 투수는 지난 등판(챔피언십시리즈 6차전)에서 나란히 3피홈런을 기록하며 부진했다.
