In famed orchestra, a mutiny of musicians

After clashing with their conductor, members of the KBS Symphony Orchestra wore matching T-shirts to express their discontent during rehearsal at the Seoul Arts Center on Friday, just hours before a weak performance. By Kim Ho-joung

Long-simmering strife between the conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra and his musicians spilled over into their performance Friday evening, when the country’s leading symphony orchestra was barely able to get through their program at the Seoul Arts Center.

Earlier in the day at rehearsal, the orchestra saw a musical mutiny, when 70 members wore matching, custom-made T-shirts to protest their conductor, Hahm Shinik, 54.

On the previous day, musicians voiced their opposition to the conductor’s reappointment and demanded an apology for disciplinary measures against members.

Behind the first chairs for flute, viola and double bass were new faces. The regular principals had been cut for breaking the orchestra’s rule limiting their outside-orchestra activity. The atmosphere on stage seemed frosty.

Hahm, a Korean-American professor of music at Yale who is thought to be the inspiration for the genius character in the popular drama “Beethoven Virus,” carried on as usual.

Despite a rocky rehearsal, the 661st Subscription of the Masters Series of the KBS Symphony Orchestra went on as planned at 8 p.m. But the discord had clearly done damage. The orchestra squeaked through their first piece, and they rendered Piazolla’s tango listless and without spark.

The KBS Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1956 as the broadcaster’s radio orchestra, is considered to be one of the nation’s finest national orchestras since Im Won-sik, the “father” of Korean symphony orchestras, was its conductor.

The strife stretches back to March 2010 with Hahm’s nomination as conductor. Many musicians said that Hahm lacked competence.

“During rehearsals when the tune is off, the conductor doesn’t know,” one member stated. “Furthermore, he doesn’t recognize the distinction between different instruments.”

At an Oct. 17 rally, musicians protested, “We don’t want a circus. Make the unskilled conductor step down.”

Hahm has clashed with his musicians before. In 2006, members of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra petitioned against the renewal of Hahm’s contract when he served as conductor.

The KBS Symphony Orchestra has faced criticism for being stagnant. The orchestra, which has an annual budget of 80 billion won, puts on 40 performances a year, while most national orchestras held up to 100 in the past.

Another criticism stems more members breaking the limit of eight hours of outside activities, taking on private lessons and lectures.

“When the conductor tried to switch around members according to skill, [members] opposed and this situation occurred,” a representative of KBS’ Cultural Events Division said. “The members do not have any thought to put on a good performance and just want to keep their seats.”

Hahm, meanwhile, has said, “There can’t be an orchestra that disregards the conductor’s instructions.”

55년 명성 KBS교향악단, 대체 왜 이러나

연 80억 예산에 연주회 고작 40회
지휘자는 조직 장악력 떨어지고
단원들은 규정 어기며 외부활동

21일 오후 서울 예술의전당 콘서트홀. 오후 8시 공연을 앞둔 KBS교향악단의 무대연습이 시작됐다. 오케스트라 단원 70여 명은 똑같은 티셔츠를 맞춰 입었다. 지휘자에 대한 항의 표시였다. 이들은 20일에도 ‘지휘자 연임 반대’ ‘단원 징계에 대한 공식 사과’ 등을 주장하며 지휘자와 대치했다.

　플루트·비올라·더블베이스 등의 수석 연주자는 새로운 얼굴이었다. 기존 수석들이 외부 활동 시간 규정을 어기고 지난달 징계를 받았기 때문이다. 분위기는 차가웠다. 하지만 지휘자 함신익(54)씨는 연습을 그대로 진행했다.

　KBS교향악단의 제661회 정기연주회는 이처럼 예정대로 열렸다. 하지만 리허설에서 보듯 지휘자·단원 사이의 갈등은 곪을 대로 곪았다. 연주 수준도 낮았다. 외국 작곡가에게 위촉한 초연곡은 리허설이 부족해 삐걱거렸다. 피아졸라의 탱고는 특유의 빛을 잃어 지루했다. 국립교향악단을 모태로 하는 KBS교향악단은 올해로 창단 55년째다. 한국 교향악단의 ‘아버지’라 불리는 고(故) 임원식(1919~2002) 선생이 초대 지휘자를 맡은 후 국내 최고 수준의 오케스트라로 자리매김해왔다. 경험 많고 재주 있는 연주자가 모인 오케스트라의 대명사였다. 추락의 원인은 어디에 있을까.

　◆리더십의 부재=갈등은 지난해 3월 지휘자 내정 당시 시작됐다. 한 단원은 “지휘자의 실력을 계량화할 수 없는 건 사실이다. 하지만 연습할 때 음정을 틀려도 지휘자가 모른다. 또 서로 다른 악기 사이의 미세한 차이도 인식하지 못하는 수준이다”고 주장했다. 단원들이 17일 피켓 시위에서 “서커스는 하기 싫다. 실력 없는 지휘자는 물러나라” 등의 구호를 외친 이유다. 지휘자의 역량 부족이 가장 큰 문제라는 인식이다.

　단원들과의 잦은 마찰도 함씨의 약점이다. 2006년 대전시립교향악단 단원들은 당시 상임지휘자 함씨의 재계약 반대를 위한 서명운동을 벌였다. 임기가 6개월 남은 시점이었다. KBS 교향악단 취임 1년이 넘은 현재에도 단원들이 반대를 계속하는 것은 지휘자가 오케스트라를 장악하지 못한다는 방증이다.

　◆단원들의 침체=2004년 이후 6년 동안 ‘선장’ 없이 흘러온 오케스트라도 문제다. KBS 교향악단 홈페이지에 따르면 연간 80억원의 예산을 쓰는 이 오케스트라의 1년 연주 횟수는 40여 회. 왕성한 활동을 하는 국내 오케스트라는 최대 100여 회 공연한다.

　‘무대’가 사라지면서 한때 최고 기량을 자랑하던 KBS교향악단의 실력이 낮아졌다. 관행적인 정기연주회만 거듭됐다. 이번 징계에서 보듯 주당 8시간으로 된 외부 활동 규정을 어기고 개인 레슨과 학교 강의 등으로 ‘겉도는’ 단원도 늘어났다. 오케스트라가 소속된 KBS 시청자사업부의 관계자는 “지휘자가 실력에 따라 단원들을 재배치하려 하자 반발해 이번 사태가 일어났다. 단원들이 좋은 연주를 하려는 생각은 전혀 없고 자리만 지키려 한다”고 토로했다. 함씨도 ＂지휘자 명령을 거부하는 오케스트라는 있을 수 없다”는 입장이다.

　◆양방향 체질개선 필요=이처럼 둘로 나뉜 교향악단 내엔 감정의 골이 깊다. 음악계에선 ‘모두 변해야 한다’는 지적이 힘을 얻는다. 작곡가 류재준씨는 “ 전문 인력으로 된 오케스트라 스태프가 필요하다. 유럽의 BBC 심포니나 베를린 방송 교향악단처럼 한국에도 제대로 된 방송 교향악단이 자리잡아야 한다”고 지적했다. KBS에서 독립하는 법인화만이 능사는 아니라는 뜻이다.
